Dear Mr. Wagland, Your readings of the Sherlock Holmes stories have sustained me through severe political violence in Haiti and a a nasty bout of ovarian cancer last year. Eight years later, I look forward to your readings like a child who insists on hearing the same bedtime story again and again. Your elegant declamation is instrumental in helping me relax before bedtime and kept me sane during some of the worst of my chemotherapy infusions. Thank you again, Jamie Cartright

Your Sherlock tales have been alongside me through 6 years of Stage IV cancer. A funny story, shortly after I was diagnosed, we had to stay at my in-laws to get some renovations done at our place. Me and my 8-year-old boy would sleep on a mattress on the floor in the loungeroom. I had the chemo pump in my arm and to help me and my son sleep, I had your version of the Hound of the Baskervilles shared through two headphones - one for me and one for my son. As we listened in the dark, I knew my boy was a little scared and so I comforted him, telling him that when the really scary bit came up, I would fast forward. He agreed and we listened away. The next thing I knew, it was morning and I woke to see my son with the headphones still in his ears - he was lying on his side looking at me. In a moment of a little panic, I asked, “did you listen to the story right till the end? I’m sorry, I fell asleep and didn’t switch it off.” He nodded his head and said with wide eyes, “there was a big black dog with fire coming out of its mouth!” He’s turned into a fine young man - so no harm there! From all of us out here: Thank you for your work, Mr Wagland!

Mr. Wagland has a rare talent for making each character distinct. He portrays their personalities, and their backgrounds, so well that you can conjure up a mental picture of them easily. Not only that, he has the unusual ability to make the women characters all sound different, and female without sounding like simpering idiots - a weakness too many male readers have. The stories become as vivid as movies in the mind's eye.

You and Mel Blanc are very similar, though totally unlike one another. Well maybe not totally. I would be so curious to know your reaction to Mel Blanc, were you familiar with his characters, such as Foghorn Leghorn (Texas), Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian (Mars), Daffy Duck, and others. They are not like your portrayals at all, yet the similarity lies in both of your ability to portray sundry characters. His range of characters is broader, although they are more like caricatures of a fantastic cosmos, unlike yours which manage to be entertainin in spite of bein much more homely and modestly presented. I leave out Bugs Bunny because his accent is repulsive to me. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJakfmSsrKqWfMk

Indeed ! A friend of mine made a short film which needed a narrator . This would cost around £400 . I said I could easily do it for half that amount despite having no experience . I in fact remarked that " anyone could do it " !! I began speaking too slow : then too fast : then my throat tightened and my voice rose an octave ! Then I made breathy sounds and mispronounced several words . After an hour we had not completed one page !! It was a nightmare . ! Anyone who thinks that they can simply turn up and talk into a microphone is completely deluded . I learned my lesson that day and my admiration for professional voice artistes has only grown since that day !! It is a real Art !!
@thehangingparsiple5692 Жыл бұрын
@@2msvalkyrie529 Haha! I am a member of a writing group and I thought I'd have a go at recording spoken word homework one week. I discovered I have a bad habit of 'rounding off' my words and running them together. "Falling in" becomes "fallininin". In fact, somehow entire words seem to vanish like this. I do not enunciate my T's very well at all. Nor my D's unless they're at the beginning of the word. Nor words ending in LE or words with double letters in such as middle or mitten or gladden. Funnily enough I did record a voice message for a company I worked for when the professional artist cancelled. I had to fit everything in between two 'markers' , and even though I only had to say "thank you for calling blah blah. For books and audio, please press 1" etc etc I kept forgetting my words! I also had to 'smile happily' as I spoke, which made me look like an absolute psycho, lol.

There is a singular pleasure in listening to a story read aloud. That harkens back to childhood memories of parents reading to us, without a doubt. However, it is also ancient memories of stories told around a campfire. The pleasure we feel is a reflection of how important it was that vital information be passed down via the spoken word. Those humans who did not feel that pleasure would be less likely to remember the lessons and less likely to survive!

I cannot recall listening to the majority of them beyond the first five minutes before awakening 7.5 hours later, the intervening time having passed restfully, but assuredly, in sleep. The joy and paradox of Mr. Wagland's narration is that I can listen to every story repeatedly, knowing I enjoy them, although each is as fresh as though I'd never listened to anything of it before. A cunning device, worthy of Moriarty, that effortlessly guarantees repeated viewings.

My absolute favourite. As a child I got my ma to check under the bed every night for 'the hound'. She never asked how I thought it got under there, she dutifully checked as she knew I wouldn't let the light be turned out until she had. Even then I never let my arm dangle over the side of the bed.

Perfect. Either for lulling you to sleep at night with the calming voice and the story itself drifting into your sleeping yet still open mind or on a free day awake to listen too in an Armchair in its intirety for relaxing and escapist pleasure.

Love, love, loved it! you must strive to focus on the high amount of people that liked this and for get the ones that don't. They are fewer and remember, There is always something people (especially certain people...unhappy, spoiled people, lol) that would like to complain about. This is perfect. Thank you for sharing this for myself and others to enjoy! I need my Sherlock Holmes ever so often. I am so busy and getting to listen to it as I work is absolutely amazing.

The prose is overwrought and could certainly have stood some heavy editing on Doyle's part (or a sorely needed editor) but the book is interesting to refer to when watching the films. The screenplays manage to tell the story more succinctly and without so much dithering. Basil Rathbone is still the best Holmes on screen and for those who aren't Britishers, a little research into Dartmoor is helpful in understanding the setting. .Rathbone's version of the story can be seen free on TUBI. There are many photos of Dartmoor online and a little googling will turn up lots of information on this little known (for most of us) and slightly spooky corner of southwestern England. Thanks to Mr Wagland for his ever superb reading.

Yes, excellent narration all the way through. Such descriptive writing from ACD of course.....I could feel the chill winds and sense the darkness over Bodmin Moor. I lived near there as I child and can remember it well, but only on sunny days. I've only discovered audio books within last few months and love them but the reader makes the story come alive I think. I'm reading with my grandson at the moment, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. He reads a chapter and I read a chapter.....he is totally still and silent while I read..... I love it.

Thanks Christine. Yes, Bodmin Moor - perhaps it's not Dartmoor after all. Confused :-)

Greg, to me, you are at the same heights as Jeremy Brett in your delivery of Holmes' didactic and bohemien way of talking. I go to bed most nights with one of your narrations on. This, and the Red Headed Leauge are my faves. (Red Headed Leauge because I may, or may not, be a fellow coppertop...😁) My mind is a very busy thing and keeps me up at night. I listen to your voice instead of my own one and I drift away. If I wake again, your narrations are still going and my brain doesn't get a chance to ramp up before Sherlock 's voice has sent me back to sleep. You have been a Godsend.
