I learned so much today. Short selling is pretty much trading put options, except you’re using borrowed shares from a margin’s account. Also, you’re obligated to give the shares back to the brokerage to avoid a margin call. This is tricky stuff. It’s so much simpler for me to buy stocks and ETF’s. The animations really helped me visualize the concept. Thank you, Julia & Philip. 💵

Short selling turns the investment chart on its head. Literally. Because your gain is their loss, and vice-versa. You have the "potential for infinite losses", but only a potential for finite gain. Because a stock can only go down to 0, you can only gain up to a certain amount.

True, shorting isn't for rookies but that doesn't mean they have to stay off it, I started as a rookie and in my first 5 months, I made a profit of about $380,000 with no funny strategies, I basically was just following the steps and guideline of my mentor/consultant, so as long as you've professional help, you're good to go.

Short sellers provide an important balance in the market by popping bubbles before they got even bigger. The narrative that they kill healthy businesses isn't really true, and sometimes businesses need to die (like you would cull a sick livestock). but sure, it is also kinda nice to see big institutional hedgies fall on their faces

They didn't actually short sell though... They used credit default swaps. Sort of like options. Still technically "short" but not the short they are talking about in this video.

It's also a movie about how banks gave a ton of loans to people who never should have been approved. Then they bundled them together and sold them as "derivatives" to pension funds. The derivatives were rated as very high quality loans, but they were actually junk. It's amazing that loads of people didn't go to jail considering all the money involved! I've never heard of "borrowing," a stock. I literally stumbled onto my family tree back through the year 80 A.D. by googling one great-grandfather's name. This was when Google was new and I just wanted to Google something to use it. My ancestor in 80 A.D. was a Viking. I knew of my ancestry from 4 countries. And, I only knew OF it; I didn't know names and dates... Now I know I'm from about 20 different countries, some of which no longer exist. It was amazing to find.

Short selling is valid if a company is not disclosing their financial situation correctly as there are a lot of mismanaged companies. However it is scummy when you're legitimately struggling and hedge fund vultures are trying to eat you alive.

The best crossover of 2021! Short selling and put options are two things I'll always stay away from. The fact that you can have an infinite loss makes it worse than gambling!

Put options are not an infinite loss product since if you are long the put then you will never lose more than your premium, and if you are short the put you will never lose more than 100*put strike price per contract. If you want to short a company, buying a put is pretty much always the better choice than short selling. You sacrifice a small amount of profit for the ability to cap your risk.

​@@BrandonMinguez There are definitely some people that have got into trouble with short puts when on margin accounts (you can still end up with large losses after all, even if they are not infinite), but options in general give a great amount of flexibility in risk planning and management. But yeah, definitely take the time to really get the options fundamentals down cold before you start using them because there are pleny of horror stories. Just for reference, the only option case that has infinite loss risk is selling a call by itself (also called a "naked call"). This infinite risk can be capped by buying a protecting call and forming a "call spread", or by owning the underlying stock (called a "covered call").

@@funtechu Makes perfect sense. I might've just seen some of those horror stories since "losing more than you put in" is still a new concept to understand when just learning about options. I've heard that term before and I don't think I'll ever be doing that one! I've mostly been learning about covered calls and long call options (LEAPs) for stocks that I believe are very undervalued. So much envy against the bigger players. Short selling is a part of the capital market that needs to exist. And while funds can’t collude to artifically deflate (or even inflate, tho noone is upset by that) the price of a stock, NEITHER can small individual investors collide to do a short squeeze. It’s either an unregulated competition, either the forum investors also are guilty of collusion to manipulate the market also.

There is a basic investment strategy that can be phrased as "buy the dip." This doesn't mean go all in while an asset's price is going down, it means average in as it goes down and/or buys as it settles. Further, the strategy is much safer to use in a bull market or a stagnant market, where the general trend is up or sideways (as opposed to the bear market where the general trend is down). A safer way to short a stock or etf is to buy an options contract. Dont put all your money into one though because they expire and you could lose everything. The safe way to do it is to own 100 shares and simultaneously buy a put contract if you think it could drop. It works like an insurance policy. The longer the contract, the more expensive it is.
