I love a short hike and I feel like the fact that it doesn't tell you how to solve the main objective is part of what makes it so great but I also feel like Breath of the Wild does the same. Other than the Great Plateau the only objective in the game that is required is to beat Gannon which can be done by walking straight towards Hyrule Castle with no Devine beasts required. Great video though I wish more people would talk about a short hike

I loved this game! I got it for free from the epic games store but didn't play it until a week ago. Also when you choose to end the game and then load again you have another dialogue with your Aunt

So glad to see you back and talking about a game I loved! I got it only recently, but it's fun to just climb the peak and glide down when I'm feeling blue.

I love this video because it’s so relatable. Whenever I hear someone talk about breath of the wild and how open world it is and you can do whatever you want I find it misleading. I fell like most open world games just give you a huge world and a checklist of things to do in them. It’s not open world, you don’t make your own fun you just choose which order you complete stuff and how much you complete. I’m honestly insanely interested in this game now, thank you.

I tried playing Breath of the Wild but, like a lot of other games, it was too overwhelming for me and just felt boring because there was so much to do if that makes sense? That may sound weird but when there's so much to do, especially side quests that you secretly probably have to do, just to get to a somewhat short and predictable ending, it just gets boring and makes me unmotivated to finish the game. With certain games though, the Dragon Age series for example, where there's a lot to do and side quests you don't HAVE to do but you could in order to change the outcome of your game, it's refreshing. Those types of games keep you interested by allowing the player to decide on the ending and the option to do all of these quests without telling you exactly, word-for-word what to do. Those types of games may not be everyone's cup of tea, I get that, but I think they're a step in the right direction to have a lot of content without the player feeling smothered. That may just be me but I thought I'd share in case anyone felt the same :)

Hollow Knight gave me the same feeling. There was no hand holding, no color by number until you're done. It just lets you discover it's world and the wonders within. I really wanted to play A Short Hike, but it's not on the switch yet. (soon🤞) Awesome video/content in general my dude!

Oddly enough, and I'm embarrassed to admit, I never noticed the 0/40-whatever score that botw was keeping on my completed quests and tasks. And I did a LOT in that game. Comparatively, I also did a lot in A Short Hike? Actually might be my favorite game I played last year!

Thoughts on your channel: is it bad that I totally forgot you existed and even who showed up in my recommended? Thoughts on video: it's dissapointing when such grand games can't offer exploration as an effective alternative to going from marker to marker, but it's perfectly understandable. The fact that a short hike could get away with building that into the game is because it was, by the sounds of it, a relatively small game. And probably didn't need to appeal to wider demographics as high budget games do. Making games like that with similar structure would make a lot of triple A companies go out of business after a few releases of such scale. The price to make would skyrocket and the demographic would be much more specific. Good video, not worth 10 months but life gets in the way sometimes, thanks for making me think and reintroducing me to your channel.

7:25 I disagree, I don't think that the ability to track quests adds value to the game. In fact, it can even ruin part of the game by telling you what you have to do next. A game is an experience, an adventure. By eliminating the ability of the player to track quests in a direct way (avoiding any kind of GUI where the quests you "have to do" are displayed, for example) you let the players explore the world that the developer has built for them in a more organic and profound way. In addition, if you get rid of such systems, the experience every player has while playing the game is more personalised and unique due to the lack of clear guidance: you are not forced to follow some specific path, you can take your own approach to the game. A game is not a to-do list, if you want to know what to do in the game next, do not read some kind of in-game manual, *play the game* instead.

I mean I guess it's always important to consider that this is just his opinion Trying to find any objective meaning in the video would be the wrong approach I think...
@zaek21444 жыл бұрын
@@janold0808 Of course, this is just a matter of opinion. I did not seek to search any objective truth with my comment. I was just stating my opinion in the same way he is stating his opinion in this video. If what I was saying in my comment was objective I would have presented it as such. I would have said "you are wrong" instead of "I disagree". At the end of the day these are just mere opinions, and the point is to confront them and gain something from the conversation. Or at least, I think that is what the comment section of youtube is for.
@janold08084 жыл бұрын
@@zaek2144 yeah you're right... Even though there are a lot of really crazy opinions on this platform 😂 I just think that a productive discussion about games can't really be had because games are so extremely subjective in their appeal. I mean you can still find objective components but there will always be another person with a different perspective. Like I really don't like soulsborne games but holy shit are there many fans of them so who am I to say "no... They're trash!"? I'm still thankful for you posting this comment and sharing your perspective and you're right in that you put "imo" up front but idk... It came off kind of like "you're wrong I'm right" to me...
@zaek21444 жыл бұрын
@@janold0808 Yeah, that can happen sometimes when communicating via text messages. You don't have the tonality and intonation of verbal communication, so you end up misinterpreting what other person has written. And about having productive discussions about videogames. I do think you can have them, but the internet usually isn't the best medium in which you can have them 😂. I mean, if people can have discussions about things as abstract and subjective as painting and philosphy, I think they can have them about videogames too. Or at least I hope so 😂
