The fact that you have a French accent speaking Khmer is giving me such a strange effect, I feel like I understand Khmer 100% better because it's making me focus to what you're saying ! I've always wanted to hear a foreign accent with asian languages~~ You've done an amazing job btw you know 90% more of my native tongue than I do

I think the lady or the French people would say the same thing as you do, when a Cambodian try to speak French in France, but I know as a fact that most French people love to hear foreigners speaking with their own accents (I live in Germany but sometimes I shop in France, it is only 15 minutes crossing the Rhine river by ferry to the French soil...
Thanks for the video! Well explained. As a Cambodian native, it is interesting to hear for the first time when you mentioned those French borrowed words as a part of modern Khmer. For me they are recognizable as borrowed. Maybe because I’m of old generation who still find it foreign to use those words 😢. but Younger Cambodian might think otherwise. I don’t see it as influence on Khmer, rather a source to borrow, especially for foreign concept/object.
Thank you for sharing, short but very informative.

well where youre wrong is laos thai and vietnam never existed when the khmer language was around to say modern day khmer came from laos or thai. Yes there are different dialects but its more of slang/accents. Tai laos is a complete different language which adapted to the khmer language.

cool, i speake Thai and know some Khmer Surin, i noticed that in Buriram they use "kh´mart for I, me, and in Surin, Si sakhet they use Kh´nyom as they do in Cambodja, same with the word beautiful , in Buriram they say "la-oo instead of "sa-át , from what i understand the words "kh´mart & "la-oo are older Khmer words, when i have been in Cambodja or have spoken to Khmer people from Cambodja they often say : "prang yey khmer boran, ancient khmer hehe there are also some khmer words in Thai language but some are considered as older words that they don´t use so often & some are more common and are nearly the same

Many of the polite forms of words in Thai are Sanskrit/Pali words which came from the very strong influence of the Khmer kings on the Thai Ayutthaya kings. Many examples abound. Also royal Thai language comes from Khmer. High class spoken Thai roll their R’s in imitation of Khmer. Thai 😮don’t focus on contributions of Khmer to Thai, they don’t want to admit some of their language comes from Khmer.

Do you read Khmer scriptures on the sandstone wall. Khmer people can read it today as long as they completed first grade. Vowel, alphabet and phonics, when people learned this they can write any new vocabularies just hear the sounds.

Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, and Preah Vihear speak the same dialect, it's very thick and accented. Battambang and Pursat have their own dialect, it's not as thick as the dialect north of the Tonle Sap. The dialects spoken in Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu, Kandal, Takeo, North Kampot, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Kratie, and Svay Rieng are very close to Standard Khmer. Southern Kampot is very similar to Khmer Krom.

If Indonesians and Malaysians study about Pre Angkorian Khmer, that's mean they study about their ancestor.
@yasokhem51963 күн бұрын
To start with, you are speaking Khmer or Cambodian far better than I do.... Secondly, you are spot on regarding the Khmer or Cambodian Language which came from the "Mon Khmer" which source were a mixture of the Sri Lankan Pali Theravada Tri Pitaka Buddhism and the Dialects of the Native Indochinese (French Terminology) Tribal Aborigineses who had inhabited the peninsula for over 5000 years long before Burma/Thailand/Laos/Cambodia etc. came into being, plus the reason why the Thai people and the Cambodian people right now are accusing each other for stealing one another culture and they fight each other like bunches of kids, you have no idea ! Obviously, the Khmer or Cambodian Language did not come from the Hindu Angkorian Vedic Sound Sanskrit Language at all... The Khmers or Cambodians are up in arms for pointing this rational reason out to them and they try to send me back to history class !

Khmer likes the long lost sister of Vietnamese language, we are no longer mutually intelligible to each other but at least are in the same family. Khmer sounds unique to me, it’s the only non-tonal national language of all Indochina countries ( Burmese, Thai-Laotian, Vietnamese are tonal languages ). Vietnamese and Khmer today are still conflicting because of many problems that I can’t write down here, I hope our relationship will be more positive soon

@@emyall8931 I have read some information about the group of indigenous people called the Samre who live in Siem Reap around Angkor. They were the last group in Siem Reap that spoken the Old Khmer language. It was documented by a French explorer/writer around the 1800s. In the 1970s a french linguist by the name of Marie Alexandrine Martin visited the Northeast of Cambodia and Thailand and met a group of people who belong to the Pearic group. She records audio and compares the Pearic words and Khmer words. I do believe the Khmer language are closely identical despite the Khmer are related to the Pearic group.

Thank you for your video. Is it possible (pre-return to Asia) to learn Khmer-Surin or Khmer Krom pronunciation rather than standard Khmer? Are there any audio or text resources? And since presumably it is written the same way how useful would it be (indeed essential?) to learn the Khmer writing system? My background is one year of Sanskrit, living in Cambodia many years but having been to lazy to learn anything more than street Khmer to survive I speak very poor Khmer. Out of curiosity and as a challenge I would like to formally study non-standard Khmer - to use in the Mekong Delta and Isarn.

Khmer language influenced to neighbour countries because some of neighbours were parts of Khmer
@Handle_Edit3 жыл бұрын
No...Old Khmer Influenced language of neighboring Nations. The Modern Khmer Language was a reformed version derived by a Khmer monk of Chinese Descent. Now this is the reason why the (r) are silenced. Chinese people who speak Khmer don’t pronounce the “R”. There’s many differences because it’s bases off his pronunciation and many borrowed words from neighboring languages because the fact that the Khmers fell to them (Viet,Thai). The closest thing to old khmer is spoken in Surin. Battambang dialect is probably close to middle khmer. Phnom penh dialect is what I would call broken Khmer or Sino-Khmer. Speaking Khmer in a nasty Chin-Viet accent 😂 😂 😂. Phnom Penh is the Biggest Chinatown on Earth.
