'A Silent Voice' Beats 'Your Name' For Animation of the Year Award

A Silent Voice wins Animation of the Year award at this year's Japan Movie Critics Awards. Makoto Shinkai ends up taking Best Director at the award ceremony but didn't actually show up to receive the award. Instead, he tweeted that he was absent because he is working on his next movie. Koe no Katachi deserves it. It tackles not only problems in our society such as bullying, depression, social anxiety and suicide but also repentance, forgiveness, friendship, love and accepting yourself for who and what you are.

Both were really great films and had absolutely beautiful animation but I'm glad that the more popular one doesn't automatically win just because it's more popular. Instead maybe more people who missed a silent voice are getting aware of it now

Just watched A Silent Voice. This movie didn't make me cry. Even so, the constant feeling of pressure in my chest was something I've never experienced before. Holy shit it has some emotional moments, and I knew it was a good movie the moment I saw how they left a TON of things to the viewers interpretation, more than explaining them. This is a must watch.

a silent voice = it happens in reality so its a wake up call for those people who are assholes to not be an ass and be kind to every person you meet who are struggling in life. especially what is happening in our lives now full of back stabbers and bullies you'll be amazed that your friend(s) is one of them

It's better this way. Makoto Shinkai explicitly stated he didn't want his first feature film to be a giant looming over him and wants to continue making movies and learn about directing. giving him best director allows him to understand what he did right & allows him to not fear his feature endeavors being made under the premise that he needs to out do "Your Name" or be a one-hit wonder. On the other hand, A Silent Voice had a really good premise and isn't just director Naoko Yamada's and his staff's endeavor but Yoshitoki Oima's as well, It was a culmination of people who showed promise and worked hard to earn that award. Literally years and series of manga and directing from both made a truly outstanding movie. I'm hopeful that Shinkai makes that movie that he feels deserves that Animation of the Year award some day soon.

I liked it more than your name. It had better execution overall, more relate able story and more heartwarming message. Although I did also like your name, to me, knowing shinkai's other films, your name was pretty experimental and janky. It had weird cuts, insert songs that screamed anime instead of film to me. Koe no katachi just felt more complete and refined to me.

I think Kimi no Na wa is more of romance and fantasy, while Koe no Katachi is slice of life. I watched both movies. I liked Kimi no Na wa but got confused with the story. Koe no Katachi got me into feels.
