A Simple And Easy Way to Make A Farm Gate Using A Panel.
I illustrate how to make a gate out of a cattle panel. The simple process should be just about an hour (including digging a hole, setting the post, determining the gate length, and installing the gate itself). This is perfect for those DYI'ers on a farm, homestead, ranch or even in the suburbs. Using cattle panels for a gate is fairly inexpensive, easy, and durable. Importantly, it can be customized for the countless situations a gate may be needed.

Thanks! I had to build a quick pen for my dog that just had puppies and had some panels left over from my garden trellis, but didn't want to waste a bunch of wood building a gate.

Exactly what I was looking for. To build a fence with the same cattle panels, how far apart do the t-posts need to be? I'm using a total of 2 panels, gate included. Also, how to attach this gate to t-post rather than wood? Thanks so much for the easy instructions!

Glad to be of assistance! How to attach: I had some heavy 9 gauge wire that I made a loose fitting loop with. You could remove the barbs from barbed-wire fence and use that too. You could even use rope, but that would be just a temporary hinge. Now to keep the gate closed I put a 1” pvc pipe into the ground where you want it to be closed and attached a straight metal rod to the gate. This will secure the bottom off the gate. And finally I use another piece of wire on top of the gate to fasten it to the fence. As for the spacing, I am not exactly sure what you mean so forgive me if my answer is off a little. While putting up the panels as a fence, I will use 3 T-posts for every panel section, but overlapping each panel by 8-10”. This way two panels will share a Tpost. So if you are only using 2 panels together, that’ll be 5 Tposts. But it will depend on what you’re using it for. I also have 350-400# hogs and place an electric wire on the inside to keep them off it. I hope this helps, I will try to send a pic of the gate for clarity when I feed the animals this morning.

I am unable to send pics or video through this chat. I did take a couple videos of various examples I did here for better clarification though. If you want them, text me at 423-888-7724 and I will send them to you. I am going to delete this thread tomorrow because of my cell number!

I hope you are still monitoring your KZbin. I noticed you have a garden post that is at an angle with your upright post. You have them wired together at the top. How did you secure the bottom of the angled post?

I drive the T-post into the ground about 6-10” at approximately the same angle. It took several attempts to get figure out the right distance/angle, but it works out well! But if you didn’t do that, you could use some pressure treated wood as a stake at the end. Yes, I just used wire to secure the top and at the sides to the fence. They do make a contraption specifically for Tposts to joint the tops. I think they are about $20 at TSC. Hope this answers your question.

I’m sorry about that. Thank you for watching though. I don’t know which video you watched but in the beginning I didn’t have a microphone but now that I do, I try to wear it whenever I make a video. Thanks for letting me know though.
