Just starting using Fusion 360. I am a complete beginner meaning I have never designed anything on any software ever. Just went through this video and was amazed how good it was. I did have one problem which is that when it came to the handles, I had the problem about driven dimensions. I had to watch another of your videos to figure it out but then it was fine and I was able to complete the box. Thanks so much. You're a rock star.

Great video. Question: at 18:31 we start creating a new two point rectangle. Up to this point, I have modeled everything exactly as on the live stream, however, I am not able to have starting point snap like what we see happening in the video. Is there a preference I need to change so that inactive component boundaries still influence a snap point while some other component is active? I can probably replicate desired behavior by creating a plan, creating sketch on that new plan, then projecting the side boundary onto the newly created sketch/plan... but that is definitely now how it is being done in the video. Thanks for any feedback.

Okay, so now I'm talking to myself... posting my question got me to thinking... turns out preferences/general/design...auto project edges on reference got unchecked in my prefs somehow. problem solved in case anyone else was having similar issue. Thanks to all and hope you all stay healthy.

When you said back to basics. That damn song Back to Life, Back to Reality, by Soul II Soul jumped into my head That's what I get for having music play in the back ground when designing as a young man. Great Video BTW. Trying to teach myself to be a Fusion 360 user and I have so many bad habits of CAD/ Drafting short cuts from the 1990s doing Electrical Design Diagrams, Structural Mechanical layout. I now regret not getting my P.E. and not completing that line of education. Karma is a fickle reminder of things done or unfinished.

Hello Lars, that was a very interesting video, with a lot of info how and what to do to make that box and you learn a lot in a calm way how you explain it because in some videos you just can't follow, I hope to learn a lot from you here, the first one will probably not work and you will go back to the beginning. And that's what I think is so great about this video. I've never used fusion 360 I usually use sketchup. and with the wireless mouse mouse from 3Dconnexion just carry on. greetings luc

Lars, you are a great educator and very modest. As for words like "width", one way to manage is to use audio-type memory to memorize spelling of the problematic part. Example: wi-d-t-h. I had trouble with a word "height" many years ago, so I memorized hei-g-h-t.

This is really good beginners tutorial. Thanks a bunch. If you can design a box you can design most things in woodworking. Cabinets, book shelves, drawers, etc. BUT I ran into problems around 18:20. I followed your tutorial step by step and word for word (well I did enter “width” instead of “with”, ha ha, sorry about that, just couldn’t help myself), After completing the Bottom Component, I went to “Change Parameters” and changed all 3 of the User Parameters by 1/2 and Wow!, the model changed in accordance with the new parameter values. I then changed them back to your default values of: L=300mm, W=200mm & T=10mm. I then completed the Side Component and added the Height User Parameter of 150mm and changed the L, W, T and H parameters by 1/2 and, again the model changed to all 4 of the new parameter values. So far so good. Then I Mirrored the side and changed all 4 User Parameters by 1/2. Again the changes were all properly applied to the model. Then reset H, W, T & H to your default values. Now I made the End component exactly as you did and the 3 sided box looked fine, HOWEVER when I changed the 4 User Parameters by 1/2 the Bottom and both Sides responded as they should BUT the only parameter that actually was applied to the End Component was the Thickness. The Height stayed at 150mm and the Width stayed at 220mm (my linear expression is: Width + 2 * Thickness). BUT the models End Linear dimension Parameter DID show a value of 110mm, which would be correct. For Some reason this 110mm wasn’t applied to the 3D Box Model. There isn’t a Height linear dimension listed in the End’s Sketch parameters. I have repeated this tutorial several times. All with the same results. Several hours of internet searches didn’t help (probably because I didn’t really know what to ask). If any one could please tell me what I am doing wrong, or inform me where I might find a solution to my problem, it would really be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Can the parameter value themself be constrained in some way? It does not make sense to have parameters that are not constrained. Also, if we make the width too small, the slot splits the end pieces into 2 pieces instead since the slot since on the end does not change as the design exists at present right?

Dear Lars, thank you so much for all those well explained lessons. When I start learning something new, I first need to choose my personal "Mentor" in the internet (usually on youtube). And i quite quickly realized, when it's about fusion 360, all those other channels can't compete with you ;) Here's one little question I'm getting a bit desperate on: I tried to set parameters on the workbench you created (Diresta Steel shop table) after the design --> and I totally failed in that. When I change the width, the tabletop goes to the left, while the long steelbars move to the right and I have no clue how to bring those supporters in between into the calculation (they just stay in place). I know it's way more complex than this box, but here's my thought: Regarding parameters, would you have designed it in a total different way? Like using more the mirroring tool or a sketch that brings up all the supporters in one place etc.... Sorry for the long text, but I guess other people might be interesting in that too :) CHeers and good day!! Michael

The line that was added for the symmetry of the slot for the handle does not show up on your completed assembly, but it does on mine! I tried making it a construction line, which it doesn't seem that you did, but then I had issues trying to make the slot symmetric to that line, so gave up on the construction line. If I delete the line, the the symmetric constraints are removed from the slot. Any suggestions?

Is there an equivalent of Shape Diver for Fusion 360?

When we are going to create new component, we get option to create "Internal" or "External" component. Your video has not covered this since possibly the feature did not exist when this video was made. How do we know what sort of component to create? There is another option with checkbox that says "For bodies". It is not clear what this means as well.

How do we constrain all faces to have same height (excluding base of course) without using a parameter?

What would the steps be now to explode all the components of this box and export to Gcode so it could be cut from a single piece of plywood

You made the ends out over the front an back. In Parameters you have Height, Width, Length an thickness. In the Width of your end you can put "Width+(thickness*2)". Now if you change the thickness the end plate will also change.

Why did you use coincident and colinear constraint and not 2 coincident constraints?

Another great crash course Lars. One thing, does the material stay the same for all the components? What if I wanted to build a book case with steal sides, but wooden shelves? That parameter thingy is so powerful! I'm saying goodbye to SCAD and SolidWorks now.

Hi UFOhunter Thank you for watching! At any time, you can right-click in the empty area of the screen and select appearances, and you can overwrite each component or face with a new appearance by dragging them on. Hope this is helpful. Best, Lars

Oh thanks. I thought since you exited the first sketch to open a new one, that it didn't take affect until then. Good to know that's not the case, and any component can have any of the material listed.

I love your videos! My makerspace is putting on program in the spring to teach kids how to make seed bombs. I would love to make a half mold of a cartoonish grenade in which the seed bomb clay/soil/seed mixture could be molded. Thinking of cnc milling the positives, then vacuum forming the molds from those. Would love a tutorial on making molds (essentially it's a chocolate mold).
