Ponen lis periódicos en el suelo y en las paredes para que hayan más calor en los cuartos fríos que no tienen nada de calefacción así que conservan de manera inmediata el calor en las noches y repelen el frío intenso

If you think about it...most of the families that lived in a house like this were poor and so, they would use newspaper as insulation from the coldness of the cemented walls. Its no different from what we use today. Insulation in the U.S. comes from a mesh of foam and other cold preventive materials.
