A Small Brass Traction Engine - Part #3. Using my Ultrasonic Cleaner caused a slight problem with the Limescale inside the boiler which was easily rectified. Cleaning off the white residue after the Ultrasonic treatment. How to make new parts look old by restoring the Patina and finally a short Compressed Air Test. / keithappleton

I am so sorry to hear about your prostate cancer. I underwent treatment a couple of years ago. My urologist wanted to do a radical prostatectomy. It is named "radical" for a reason. Men are not quite plumbed right for such a thing. I searched around and elected to undergo Proton therapy. Unlike x-ray radiation which zaps right through and there is collateral damage to surrounding tissue (much, much less with modern therapy), they generate a 3-D image and can stop the proton where they want. There still is some scatter... I was blessed as my insurance covered most of the cost. So far, no evidence of cancer, but I am due for a cystoscopy in August. Again, men are not plumed for that sort of thing, but it really isn't bad. My bladder cancer was much more of an ordeal. I guess I am trying to be a cancer poster child, I dunno. I am sure it won't be something you want to do because you are bored, but I expect you will have a good outcome as well. I have enjoyed your videos for a long time... Best to you... I will keep you in my thoughts and please keep us updated. We like you and want to keep you around!

Thank you for the information and kind end comment. I think that is the same type of Radiotherapy I had. (Proton) I have to wait until the end of July to see if it has been effective when I come of the Hormone tablets. Things fell generally better and I have had minimum side effects so far.

Dear Sir, I hope it all goes well with your health treatment and that you recover completely. I am totally sure that you know all this (and much more), but let an armchair railway modeller have a go: Calcium Carbonate is a very strange mineral. Its solubility curve (against temperature, google "calcium carbonate solubility vs temperature") is quite an anomaly: As the temperature rises, it becomes less soluble! And, of course, that's what causes lime scale forming in water boilers. In the industry, high Calcium Carbonate content water is the bane of boilers! In Brazil we call it "hard water" (água dura) and it causes a number of problems. It dissolves in acid, as you well know. In your hot ultrasonic bath, as the mechanic waves breaks the scale, some of it must solubilise, but as it is a hot medium it must precipitate again, causing the white deposits on the surface of your beautiful model. The "Carbusonic" cleaner must make it even worse, as it states, in its label, to be a "10" in its pH ("Aluminuim" safe...), that is, quite alkaline. The obvious solution to this must be to de-scale the boiler before using the US cleaner. Unless, it is easier to clean the white deposits, afterwards. Cheers from obnoxious chemists-know-it-all Brazil!

Have you ever tried a weak vinegar solution for dealing with the lime scale? Or perhaps one of the household lime deposit cleaners? Over my way we have a product called CLR which does a good job of this sort of thing on showers and other plumbing for those with high mineral water supplies. I'm sure there's something comparable under another name in the UK. One or the other might remove the inner deposits without letting it re-settle on the outside. Or if you've tried it and it didn't work out that would be handy to know too. And all the best for beating the cancer. Apparently I missed the earlier video where you mentioned it.

I always use "Killrock-K" kettle de-scaler, it does all that I need it to do. I hope that the Radiotherapy worked - we shall see. Thanks for the good wishes.

Did you question Charlotte about how the traction engine got damages from falling off of its display?... maybe she is busted! The Statute of limitations is never up on damage to steam powered devices.
