Italian here, you should really have a look at the Moby Prince disaster because it's one of the most mysterious and tragic disasters. Beware it's a huge rabbit hole and it involves a lot of research in order to understand fully what happened, the aftermath and the environment in which it occurred. It's probably gonna need a 30 or 40 minutes video, 10-15 definitely won't be enough. People are still waiting for justice like Ustica.

I'm a former tanker officer. A few comments in no particular order. 1) AMOCO, at least on this side of the pond is pronounced am-O-co. 2) yes, the AMOCO CADIZ is worth of video, so is MOBY PRINCE. 3) I've never seen a tanker that has to shift back and forth at the pier like a bulk carrier during discharge, all the tanks are connected to a central manifold amidships. 4) Tank cleaning (Crude Oil Wash - COW - in this case) and Inert gas systems (IGS) are a full 'nother story themselves. Prior to IGS, tankers blew up way to regularly during tank cleaning.

Back in the 1980s, I worked in a manufactured gas plant. We'd receive regular bargeload deliveries of #6 crude oil. One of the most critical safety procedures we were taught was to make sure that the grounding straps from the dock/pumping equipment were properly grounded to prevent something just like this. I've never heard of a tanker having to disconnect and move to pump out different compartments, either.

When I was very little in the 1970s there was a tanker ship fire on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. The tanker Corinthos collided with the tanker Edgar M. Queeny and there was a huge explosion that shook my house, a couple miles away. I remember my dad watching the news on TV and there was footage of the ships burning. The deck of one of the ships was lifted and was draped over her side like a curtain. I found the Coast Guard report on it, but I can't find footage of it anywhere, and it's been so long that not many people even remember it now. It was pre-internet so it's almost forgotten. Plus that area of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania has had quite a few refinery accidents and incidents over the years so it kind of gets lost in the noise I guess.

This disaster sounds like it was an unnfortuneate series of events that was somewhat unavoidable. Unless you can prove there was negligence a spark can happen from static charge (preventable but not totally avoidable) and the fact that the tank was being cleaned after it was emptied shows they were trying to follow protocal.
@Sochibusi
@Sochibusi Жыл бұрын
Washing of tanks is a complex operation that needs follow strict rules and a checklist that is designed to leave no room for unforeseen events. A spark can happen but inertisation procedures if correctly followed make sure that flammable gas and oxygen mix value is below explosivity level - thus making a spark harmless. Negligence cannot be proved (evidence went up in smoke), but I'd bet on it.
@samuelplyler1511
@samuelplyler1511 Жыл бұрын
@@Sochibusi the problem was that the ship, other than the repaired damage, had a clear record, which is where the argument for negligence would initially come from.

Makes sense to me. The more you know about something, the less frightening it becomes, because the unknown is the most frightening thing there is. Then again, I also spent a few seasons working on Great Lakes freighters back in the 90's, in spite of having grown up on my mum's love of Gordon Lightfoot, and knowing every word of "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald", so who knows why we do what we do? And yeah, I concur, confined spaces are very, very scary. They're death holes. And often being the only woman, and *always* the smallest person wherever I was working, I was automatically trained for and assigned to nearly all confined spaces work. The worst was probably when I was working in a steel foundry, and got to clean up an oil spill from under one of the blast furnaces because I was the only one who would fit down there. Good times indeed.

As Italian and born in 1974 I well remember this tragedy. BUT a couple more deserve your attention, the oldest of the 2 being the Moby Prince tragedy, when a ferry collided with a tanker and many many people loss their lives in the fire that started, the more recent one is the Costa Concordia, where a "captain", busy with something else, led a big cruise line to capside...

Ah yes, the island of Kharg. My dad and his crewmates working for Smit Salvage where laying a pipeline from the mainland towards that Island, a bit pointless at the time since the Iraqi airforce would bomb the pumping stations on a regulair basis. This is also the time that Smit gained a lot of experience in putting out oil tanker fires, most missiles would hit the engine room, and if the fire could be contained it would mean that a percentage (up to 10%) of cargo value would go to the salvage company, these where prosperous times for salvage companies like Smit Salvage (part of Smit International).

I've spent many summers of my childhood in Liguria in the town of my grandparents, just west of Savona, and I remember, after almost any trip to the beach, having to ask my mother help to take some "catrame" ("tar") off my feet. At the time i didn't really know where those strange, sticky clumps of black stuff came from, I almost found them funny. And that was 10 to 15 years after the Haven sank. I would appreciate very much a video on the Moby Price disaster too.

I dove on the wreck 5 years ago, as a recreational diver you can only visit the bridge deck and the funnel as the rest of the ship is too deep and only accessible to technical divers. Nevertheless, if you're lucky (as I was) and visibility is good, the sight of the immense hull below with all the pipings is unforgettable, kind of sad but impressive nevertheless. If you are a diver and want to visit they organize dives from the port of Genoa, it's about 30 minutes speedboat trip, you need a deep dive certificate as max depth is 40m. Strongly recommended for experienced divers.

@marcocasati6953
@marcocasati6953 11 ай бұрын
@@toonvanassche1950 at 40m you find the wheel house, which is pretty hight up over the stern, the rest of the ship is unfortunately much deeper and you need to do a technical dive to go down there, the propeller is at 80m just for perspective. finding an excursion is super easy just google it, I went with a company called nosy dive but there's many. if you stay at about 40m you get about 15-20 minutes of bottom time, you can exceed it and do a 12 minute decompression if you feel comfortable doing it, though please be safe and don't do stupid things as some people die there every year because they go too deep or get inside the ship, local coast guard has threatened to close the wreck to dives already because of too many accidents, let's try to keep it accessible for all enthusiasts because it's one of a kind :)

How terrifying to have been on that ship when it blew. With condolenses to the loved ones of the six who were killed, I wonder how many people were rescued off of that ship. I also wonder how they got off. Did they just have to jump into the oily burning water and swim to the rescue ships? Always find it inetersting to hear pronunciations from around the world. Where I'm from, we pronounce Amoco with the emphasis on the A, and it's a short a like cat. The second o comes out more like uh. So like A-muh-ko.

Hi John, as always, fascinating. All your presentations are great. I particularly liked the ones about radiation accidents. If there are any potential stories left, it would be great to see them :)

Is it entirely evil that sometimes I wish for more radiation mishaps just so we can watch Plainly’s future videos about them? Or is that understandable?

The tanker BT Barcelona was of the same design and built by the same shipyard but was built earlier than the Amoco sisters, and was destroyed by Iraqi fighter bombers during the tanker wars. Amoco Chicago was one of the Amoco sisters and was characteristically unlucky, being written off only a short time into her career after an engine explosion. As far as I know Amoco Singapore still exists in some form, as an FSO (Floating Storage and Offloading barge).

Thanks. The tragedy of its sistership, the Amoco Cadiz, was a traumatic event in France. The case against Amoco lasted a very long time. It took the Exxon Valdez incident for the American justice system to take action.

"Balls!" LMAO. Going to get one of those when finances improve- if they ever do. Seems like I am back in the 1970's with Ford Pintos, Jimmy Carter as President and the economy in shambles. Pintos seem to be everywhere!
