Hello everyone!!
Cheers for taking the time to click on the video it really does mean a lot !
This week i head out on my kayak up the River Little Ouse in Norfolk (East Anglia).
I head up the river towards Thetford before being stopped by a pair of angry swans protecting what i can only guess would be some young signets near their nest. I tried to get past for about 45 minutes before deciding it probably wasn't going to happen without getting nipped so i moored up and found a lively little pine plantation wood to set up my hammock for a nice woodland wild camp. I sink a few tinnies and cook a home made chilli on the campfire! i hope you enjoy the slightly longer version of video.
Big love everyone!
Craig.

Oh dear Craig you've been seen off by a Swan 🤣 it's not their bite that hurts it's their wings that can give a bit of a knock but they normally only do a show of force to scare you off, which is exactly what happened. A Swan bite is nowt mate, they got tiny little teeth but they do not hurt at all, I've had many a Swan nibble my hand while feeding them bread on the canal banks around our way, misses got photo's. Enjoyable kayak journey though mate, oxo cubes, gravy granules and Worcestershire sauce for a great taste in ya chilli, all the best to you Craig.

I used to kayak the Medway a lot and got used to dealing with the swans. Waving your paddle or shouting is not a good idea. You're then seen as a threat. Best way past them I found was to move slowly and stare straight ahead as if you're fixated on something ahead of you. Don't even look at them. When they realise you aren't aware of them they calm down pretty quickly, On the other hand if you're not comfortable doing that then absolutely turn around and avoid the encounter. Nothing to be embarrassed about mate.

In a spice pouch or baggie: 2 tbs chili powder 2 tbs granulated garlic 1 tbs. Onion powder 1 teaspoon brown sugar 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon black or white pepper 2 tablespoons of dehydrated onions 1 tablespoon of MSG Mix together and dump onto the meat when searing when the meat is 3/4 cooked before you add your liquid. Pre packed spice blends make camping infinitely easier and tastier. Optional 1 small piece of dark chocolate…. Not my personal preference Cheers!

Easiest way to deal with swans is take a couple of bread rolls or slices, or some seeds/oats in a bag and if you do get a feisty swan to pass, you can usually turn them from a foe into a friend with a bit of grub🙂. Best way to pass swans is just drift past them with your paddle at your side and avoid paddling if you can. Don't panic and start thrashing around, just chill and offer a bit of food if necessary. If they calm down and go for the food, just get by gently while they are eating it. Approach them as a friend, don't show fear and get by as smoothly and quietly as possible. Most swans are just fucking with ya! I've had them eating food from my hand on the kayak before and you can get by most feisty swans if you're confident with them and don't go steaming through. If none of that works, then you can shit yourself😂!!

I paddle the same area as you usually the Stour but also the Little Ouse, Thet etc I was in a similar situation last year with a grumpy male Swan protecting his family he was doing that weird thing with his wings but I was being as respectful as possible and got passed OK and thought everything was fine I was probably 50m away from him and I stopped paddling for a minute then started to hear the noise the wings make when a Swan is preparing to take off, wondered what the heck was going on turned my head round to have a look and he was airborne heading straight for me, nothing I could do luckily he hit the back of the kayak and not me no harm done but I think I would have been OK if I had kept moving he didn't like it because I had stopped and and was too close, I now either turn round if it's looking too dodgy or pass and keep moving until I'm out if sight.
