Now that's family. These people didn't asked to brought into this world. They just need a little help like most of us in one way or another. What Mark is doing is great for them. I assume he's asking the questions a lot of us want to know but wouldn't ask. That being said, it doesn't matter now. They are family and clearly stuck together. My prayers for all of them to remain healthy and happy. ❤

Mark asks questions we want to know because to help someone is to understand them so you know what help their need. In fact I wish he asked them more questions like how they were brought up all 16 kids when did Lorraine stop talking and why ray don’t talk. Trauma is not easy to talk about but it’s how one becomes free and start healing.

Mark is definitely out of his element. He is definitely from LA. My parents and grandparents born down south moved upnorth here in Indiana. It would be nothing to see 5, 6, 7 family on the porch. It was funny. Cars would ride by in awe of what was going on and it was a typical day. Those who knew us would stop by to say Hi or just honk and wave. Miss those days

I think you should open your mind a little bit more. Maybe you were bullied when you were younger if so I'm very sorry about that. I feel Mark's questions about their parents. Is a way to get them to open up and talk a bit more. Just because they might have been related doesn't mean, they were bad, Mark could be getting them to remember when they were young and happy, when they kids and didn't have as many worries. At the same time he's opening our eyes about different people from different places. Heck I'm up in northern ontario canada. And I've been watching the Whittakers from the beginning. They're a truly sweet caring family. When Mark asks about Ray and girls, there's no shame in that, he's an adult, he's a man. Probably felt more included to be asked such things. The giggles you heard was more like when a 5 year old surprises the family by saying yes I gotta a girlfriend. It's sweet, it's surprising, it's endearing. Nothing about it is to make fun. At least thats the way I seen it. Mark also had no way of knowing Betty was sexually abused. And he left it alone. But if certain subjects aren't disgust than how will others learn and be able to provide assistance if possible. If no one knows of the hardships other suffer?

The Whittaker’s are a happy family. We cannot judge them by the way they live, that’s all they have ever known. People expect this family to live with standards that the average American family lives by and this will never happen. Accept them for the way they are. Mark does a wonderful job of educating people about what happens in the real world. He is a photographer, not a social worker or minister. I am certain he has never experienced or understands their way of life, so one cannot judge Mark on how to talk to the Whittaker family. It’s easy to sit back and criticize, but it’s another thing to actually do the hard work Mark is doing to educate the rest of us! Keep doing what you’re doing, Mark!

I don't think Mark intends to be disrespectful with his questions. I think this type of family situation being rare these days, people like Mark truly want to know how these things can occur in modern America. His language and questions should include very simple words as well as a minimum of words, maybe as one would converse with a third or fourth-grader.

Well I grew up in East Tn very poor. An outdoor toilet had to walk a distance to even go! 3 room house, I am the baby of 7 siblings. Didn't have hot water in our house and there were cracks you could see it snow from the ceiling. We heated with a wood stove and coal if we were lucky to purchase it. But it made me Who I am today appreciating life. When I saw Betty give Mark's sister the squash I knew she was very sincere and it made her feel good to give something. I am and have been a care giver for the Department of Intellectual, Developmental, Disabled individuals most of my life. I think when you have been poor you want to give more than receive. I now have 2 developmental disabled adults that live in my home with me that I care for. I like to think I can make a difference in the quality of life. I enjoy watching the Wittickers family, and see the journey they are on. They are a close family who care about the other and Betty appears to be the mother figure. I can't wait until the next episodes and see them advance if only a little at a time. I do feel their private sexual life should be kept private as much as possible. I wouldn't want anyone tell about my privacy.

I commend you and your entire life story. It is people like you that give me hope that good, self-sacrificing people still exist. Your comment about the squash resonates so strongly. I remember the first time I watched the video and saw Betty giving the squash and feeling so proud about the Appalachian culture. We always share our table, garden, back, and anything else we have with our neighbors. They have so little but still want to give Mark and his assistance something straight from the garden. Thanks so much for your comments and tremendous story. You have brightened my day and I hope others are challenged by your amazing work.

Born & raised in southern WV & I must say people judge us a lot but there’s not a lot of places in the US and meet nice simple minded people who have a close family that actually put the electronics down and just be a family but here in WV this happens alot. Not everyone is inbred in our state also, nothing beats a simple life home made meals growing a big garden frying up green tomatoes drinking ice tea setting on the front porch on a cool evening with family. I’d give my last penny to do that with my momaw & popaw again it’s the simple life the new generation never gets to experience due to being glued to a game system or phone it’s a shame. I pray this family gets donations and live a happy healthy life and more help is provided. Take this video and really look at the big picture they are happy together happy with what they have don’t want for nothing not worried about a thing. Please don’t judge they didn’t ask to be born into this lifestyle but they are making best with what they have it’s beautiful. Love these videos hope he continues to update us through the years. ❤

Exactly, to learn about someone you have to dig a little, and nobody has to answer if they don't want, in the earlier videos, there was a lot of answers that Betty kept very basic as not to devolve that much. His questions are fine. And asking Ray about girls is fine, Ray may be simple but he's still a human male, who is interested in women, and it's a question you would ask a 10 year old child to illicit a blush, if there is a girl at school they like. He's treating him as an equal.

Was born in Athens, Tennessee. Spent most years before college in Etowah, Tn. Went to undergrad at Hiwassee College and UTC. Then left for Chicago and lived all over the USA and World since then. My parents still live in that area and my brother lives in Knoxville. So, there is that. I have spent a lot of time in Australia and have had a lot of Australian colleagues but my heart will always be in Appalachia. Trout fishing on the Tellico river. Shopping for Christmas in Gatlinburg. Backpacking portions of the Appalachian trail. Eating mamaws biscuit and gravy. Helping papaw feed the cows and bailing hay every summer. Canning corn. Jarring kraut. :)

Speech therapy might help Timmy. He enjoys learning. Lorraine can speak clearly! She is just shy and quiet. This happens in large families, even those of normal intelligence. One or two members will just be very quiet and let others do most of the talking. I don’t think Speech therapy could help Ray. I think the part of his brain that is responsible for speech didn’t develop properly. He seems to understand most of what people say. Maybe ASL could help him communicate better. Then he wouldn’t get so frustrated. The porch looks much cleaner than it used to. I wonder who cleaned it up? And the Whittakers all look happier and healthier. I think they’ve been eating better since Kenneth has been helping with the cooking. I don’t think he’s been mooching off of them, or if he has, not much.

@@GlobalNews-and-Reviews it was an awesome way to deal with the subject matter: a family who is very different from most of us, yet seem to know how to BE A Family better than many of us. Great job! I agree with you on how some subjects were addressed, even though I like Mark's work.

I understand what you mean about Mark probing into the family’s history, but I do understand as well that I mean for better getting to know the family, someone has to ask these things. If anything what I can find annoying a bit is that he asks certain things over and over and over again. And at times draws attention to the family’s conditions. Even once telling Betty that she too must share the mental ailments that affect, Lorraine, Ray and Timmy. Or even more noticeably telling Kenneth: Your eyes are off, while true, there are other ways to say it. When it comes to laughing about Ray, I doubt at all it was mean spirited. Ray is of course a grown man, but with the way he perceives the world it’s no different than asking a child “Do you have a girlfriend?” Yeah some will laugh at them, but it’s a matter of education. Those of us who have a bit more respect towards our neighbors, our laughs come from a place of tenderness and warmth, we laugh at how adorable and innocent Ray is.

Tracy: Thanks for your comments. I'm glad that you noticed that I'm not being hypercritical of Mark as his work is phenomenal and goes well beyond his Whittaker's series. Much of my commentary is just talking about it like I would with friends or family. I very much appreciate your perspective and positivity. I don't fault Mark for not understanding the culture and I am simply adding to the discourse so we all learn together. In other videos by The Soft White Underbelly, Mark introduced topics that I have no clue about and it was highly educational. We learn from each other when we can have discourse without taking offense to every word that is spoken. ...and yes, I remember growing up and spending hours and hours during the summer sitting on my grandparent's porch drinking sweet tea and swatting the flies away. We live in a beautiful world and its great to be outside and breath the fresh air.
