Future review suggestion: when reviewing 'tower' speakers, i.e. speakers that do not need a stand (bookshelf speakers) it would be helpful if you included a picture of you or someone standing next to the speaker so we can get a much better idea of the size and height of the speaker........yes I can read the specs and figure it out, but a picture is much better. Here’s a cool tip for beginners. Speakers that tend toward a flat frequency response will sound more natural and accurate at reference level, but will suffer the “needs more volume” blues at very low levels. Speakers with a rising bass response and a bright upper midrange/lower treble may sound a little coloured and “larger than life” at higher levels but they will sound full and rich when played quietly.

What a great review again Steve! I can relate to what you are saying about Audio Physic. You also mentioned the Virgo's, Joachim Gerhard, former designer and owner from Audio physic is still designing speakers. And if you are an Virgo owner Joachim can make them up to date. For me, living in Europe, The Netherlands its only a 2 hour drive to Brilon, West Germany. Last year he designed a pair of Sonics Anima SE for a friend of mine. A little standmount speaker with a beryllium dome tweeter and 6"mid driver. All the drivers are from SD Acoustics. The front has a 2" french oak baffle. They sound stunning, i've auditioned them with music you mentioned, Rebecca Pidgeon...its really stunning how they sound. Price range is between €2700 and €3300, depending on what kind crossover parts you purchase. My friend wasn't happy with the speakers...its a taste thing ofcourse and the audio journey never ends. So i got the oppertunity to purchase them after i auditioned them in my home with my own electronics. Well keep up the great work you are doing and bring us more joy with your'e outstanding reviews.

Back in 1968 i was looking for a second pair of speakers to replace the Goodmans Axiom 201 which i bought in 1965. I went to the same hi fi retailer i bought the Godmans from and they were demonstrating a new speaker from Germany. It was a pair of Telefunken L 645 HI FI bookshelf speakers and they sounded very similar to the original Quad ESL Electrostatics. So they became my second pair of speakers.

I have a pair of Tempo’s now for about 12 years and they are all what I want of a speaker. When I bought them I first looking for a pair of B&W for building a surround system but I didn’t love their sound and my dealer proposed a pair of Audiophysics and connected with the Arcam CD player that I have at that time and an Arcam AV Receiver that I wanted to buy. It was love at first site, that was the sound I wanted. A year later I changed the Arcam for an other Arcam av receiver with more power and then the tempo’s played a fair degree better in all aspects. I never heard of the brand Audiophysic until my dealer gave a demonstration. But last year I wanted to buy a pair of bookshelf speakers from Audiophysic but my dealer didn’t sell Audiophysic any more. I did notice that price of the Tempo’s was more than doubled about 125% extra. My dealer told me that they became too analytical and the sound was less coherent than before and He no more clients for the branch. I believe my dealer and in fact he is become one of the greatest high end dealers in Belgium.

Great review Steve. We realize you’re livelihood depends on a certain need for perpetual dissatisfaction and staying away from the the best stuff (“end game”) especially speakers, so I appreciate it when you stretch further to review more better speakers and other components. This will of course usually mean reviewing more expensive speakers and other gear which might have relatively narrow appeal to your audience. Affordable is interesting. Especially for the initiates amongst us. But please don’t stop stretching for the better and best stuff. I built the Elekit TU8600 last summer(not sure which "letter" designation, has Lundahl OPTs and upgraded caps, but a lesser Alps vol pot) after building their 6L6GC amp and reading Herb's review. Listening with older Klipsch Forte I and man, I was not prepared for how great it sounds. I figured it would be something I'd use on Sunday drives, but it has barely left my system since the day I finished building it. It displaced a Yamaha A-S2100 and I feel like it has even more bass slam than the Yamaha, at comparative levels. It is in no way lacking in a 20'x30' room unless you are looking for true live concert SPLs. The Pentode amp is so much more what you think of as "tube like", fun, but not a daily driver.

OMG Steve! I've been listening to the videos of the Tannoy dual concentric speakers, and they have that magic "in the room" quality that few others have, and maybe have it as much or even more than the big Klipsches, even the Autograph Mini, which has only a 4" woofer, and the bass only goes down to 100 Hz, but, above that, they sound flawless. They may be my new bucket list bookshelf, with a sub. But, at $2k for a pair, I might have to settle for their Gold series powered monitors, which start at $600 for a pair.

𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚, 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩. Solid imaging w/well resolved soundstage depth is truly the dominion of narrow baffle lautsprechers like this German offering. The audio physics ;) involved dictate the more narrow baffle elicits less damaging very early reflections, allowing greater likelihood of the disappearing act. Interesting you noted similarity of Maggie panels as I've found panels more likely to offer a window into the recording, as opposed to narrow baffles offer more of musicians in your room perspective. Either approach can offer the disappearing act if well set up. I'd love to experience these newest Audio Physic speakers, I'll keep an eye out at a show perhaps. I like the isolation approach... ie, from the floor, drivers isolated from the cabinet, etc., just intuitively that must have merit. Thanks for this one.

Hmm... $8,000/pair is slightly out of my personal price range, but by your description, it sounds like I'd still love to listen to/hear these speakers for myself someday, because it seems like they were quite impressive to you overall, and in a good way!... If I ever see them set up anywhere I'll definitely have to check them out, because I really love great imaging speakers too! Now, while on the subject of mind blowingly superb imaging and overall awesome sound quality speakers, have you ever heard of a speaker company called GamuT? (I think they are from Denmark or somewhere like that?) Anyway, they make a speaker model that looks about the same, size-wise, as the ones in this video, and that model is called the "Phi 5". They also make a smaller, stand mount model which is similar, the "Phi 3". I have personally heard BOTH of those models, and they are absolutely amazing, stunning, (words can't do them full justice), so if you ever get a chance to hear them, you'll prob. really like their sound (FULL, live performance) reproduction so much that you'll think that you can reach out and touch the individual instrument(s) and singer(s) it's so realistic of a presentation/experience!... You might try to audition those models, (the newest versions of both), if you can find a place to get them from... They are both also quite reasonably priced, especially considering their absolutely outstanding performance! (I think the smaller Phi 3 model is under $2000/pair, and the larger Phi 5 towers are only around $5000/pair I believe... Well worth their cost IMO, even though I can't realistically afford either one myself, lol!... But one can dream...) Keep up the great videos man, we all really appreciate your honest reviews from a thoroughly experienced "ear" for audio quality!
