I have just finished this and absolutely loved it. So invested in both plights of the main characters and how violence impacts their lives. A novel of power and violence, where the true tragic connection between the protagonists is never realised by either.

Agree, I listened to the audiobook, I rated it higher. The narration was good. Hoping you'll use a knitting analogy in all your 2023 Booker reviews now, particularly Pearl....

I agree with you that Eniola’s story is more engaging. But I also think that the way Wura and Eniola’s meeting feels rushed mirrors actual setting in Nigeria because people from both classes rarely ever meet/interact on personal level than the one two eventually interacted in. Those other occasional meetings in Carl’s shop where they rarely even said a word to each other mirrors actual reality. Maybe a case of bad book blurb 🤭 But I’m also going to make a video for this one and share the many cultural insights I picked up on being a Yorùbá reader.

Great review. Hope I get on with it more than you did. I haven’t read her first novel either. It sounds like she would’ve stuck the landing if she just focused on the family that are on a slippery slope to poverty. Hmm, very intrigued.

"I have very little positive to say about it" 🤣 4/10. Will skip. I read Pearl which was good imo, maybe shortlist but don't think it'll win, and In Ascension which was 4/10 for me. Many of the books are not available here yet. I really want to read All The Little Bird-Hearts, How To Build A Boat and the one which sounds dystopian - Prophet Song. Rest not so interested. A Spell of Good Things was a maybe, now it's a nope. 🤭

I picked up this book since I liked her spell of good things. But what a disappointment. DNFed it half the way through. Constantly telling the audience what a tough job she holds and how busy she is. obnoxious after a certain point.

So not agreeing with you so far- I loved Spell, hated Study for Obedience, Agree on If I survive you, This other Eden was good- rating 8,/10, Old God’s time 4/10. How to build a boat 7/10, Finishing In ascension- not sure yet- curious to see your opinion- no dancing on this one!
