The “master to break rules” is a HUGE part of jazz too. Great review! I’m going to have to read this now!

Hey! Nice review. It is uncanny how much Brunner nails in this book. Though you're right that this isn't exactly a page-turner. It's unfortunate that Brunner seems to be the forgotten author of the New Wave, as compared to Ballard, Aldiss, and Moorcock. His work deserves more attention. I have read that he had a difficult personality, and alienated many people in the industry. Combined with the experimental nature of the writing this might explain his lack of recognition. I'm not exactly racing to read The Sheep Look Up when I can just watch the news. Anyways, cheers!

It is unfortunate he's not better known. Hopefully that changes this year. I can't think of a more appropriate time to read this book. Thanks for watching!

Hey man, I really love your videos, this stuff is super interesting. Any chance you know more about the history of leftist political ideas explored within sci-fi? As in, I feel like the genre was used as a way to get certain ideas into the public without it being too obvious? I know that there are some very obvious examples of this but I'm sort of just dipping my toes into reading more sci-fi and I'd LOVE to know more about the history of things. !

I think one of the great things about SF is that the full spectrum of social and political ideology can be / has been fully sand-boxed. There are authors who's ideas we do now point to and say "they are firmly Right Wing" or "they are firmly Left Wing", when I think the reality of blooming modern society had most people really fleshing out what those terms meant in a post-war modern literary era. There you'll find progressive social ideas from people like Heinlein, even though most would explicitly label him as "right wing". Aspects of Larry Niven are wholly "Right Wing", but in his work, you can see that he fully embraces strong elements of social progressiveness, he just believes that you'll never rid society of right wing wealth or corporate markets. There are writers like LeGuin who definitely appeal to "left-wing progressive modalities", yet she's appreciated by some Right Wing readers like The Outlaw Bookseller. Not to prevaricate, but I'd say, just as a short list; authors like LeGuin, Atwood, Vonnegut, Bradbury, Butler and Banks all tend to be considered "Humanitarian leftist" authors, but there are very few SF authors that I'd point to and say "that guy is an out and out fascist"..(except for maybe Mishima who was a self proclaimed Nazis-fascist and confusingly, a homosexual). I hope that answers your question. Thanks so much for watching!
