A Stewart Stronghold - Rothesay Castle

Rothesay Castle has been closed for four years, due to work being carried out on the building. After that time, the castle has reopened to the public. It is located right in the centre of Rothesay. It was once the home of the Bute Stewarts, and was attacked by the Vikings. It even has its own resident ghost.

What a delight to see I went a couple of years ago. A Stewart Strong Hold with a fascinating history. Did you get to St Mary's Chapel. to the south of the town. Has a tomb attributed to one of the Stewarts. But it's not confirmed who....

@@AScottishOdyssey A little bit of history for you. Behind St Mary’s Chapel lies the Bute Mausoleum one of the burial places for the Crichton Stuart family, with Mount Stuart being nearby too. One of an interesting members of that family was John Crichton- Stuart 2nd Marquess of Bute 1793-1848. He was responsible for the construction of Cardiff Docks. Over budgeted reaped rewards with exports of steel and coal. He developed great wealth and was extremely rich. As well as principal residences at Mount Stuart on Bute, Dumfries House in Ayrshire. As well as Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire and Cardiff Castle, in which his son John 3rd Marquess 1847-1900 enlisted the services. Of William Burgess the great English architect, and designer to renovate Cardiff Castle. He also restored and rebuilt Castell Coch north of Cardiff with Burgess’s expertise. The 5th Marquess also named John because of death duties sold a lot of the land the family owned in the surrounding area and gave the castle to the people of Cardiff in 1947. Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch are worth a visit.
