The high school represents independent thought and the church represents a loss of individualism and the danger of groupthink. This is not a criticism of children’s reluctance to transition from high school to adulthood-it’s an examination of the terror of losing yourself to a an extremist ideology like, oh I don’t know, like Christian nationalism or theocratic totalitarianism 👀.

I was born and raised in a cult, and have studied them for just under a decade now. I have mixed feelings about this story. On the one hand, it's well written and has a lot of symbolism to what real cult life is like. It's like an educational story about cults, made for those who know absolutely nothing about them. Kind of like an "ancient Egypt for kids" book; a complex subject narrowed down to the fundamentals and presented in an interesting way. SPOILERS* However, actual cult culture is much more sinister than this, and in my opinion, much more scary. For one thing, education was deemed as the key to avoiding getting brainwashed. But it doesn't matter how smart you are or how much you know. *Anyone* can fall victim to this and become a fully believing cult member. This was nicely hinted at towards the very end. For another, cult tactics are finely tuned to gaining new followers. New followers = more money and devotion to the head hancho(s). When looking for new recruits, they start newbies on easy-mode. Put their best foot forward, so to speak. All the weird and crazy sh** isn't revealed to the person until much later when they're already devoted and are less likely to question it. Whereas in this, it was all basically thrown right in the MC's face from the start. Finally, and probably the most terrifying of all is the fact that there's nothing supernatural about cults. There's no 'big bad guy' controlling you with the forces of evil or whatever. There's no 'otherworldly' presence pulling the strings of feeble human minds. There's just greedy, power hungry humans who manage to convince other humans to follow them and their version of god. Anyone can fall prey to them because these average people capitalize on our basic human longing for community and happiness, and with that power these leaders cause the death and suffering of thousands, all while lining their pockets. One thing this story nailed though: cults are a hell of a drug.

Not everyone. I was raised a Jahova Witness and I openly refuted the church starting around the later end of 5th grade. The kingdom hall crowd didn't like me from day 1 and my mother was forced to give up on my faith the 2nd time she literally had to drag me there kicking and screaming obscenities. Please understand I was 9. I didn't have many friends but, there was a young lesbian couple that liked having me around and this kind of catalyzed the whole confrontation.

Dark & Matt- kudos! You created a work of art. The story- as it continued, what was happening became clear. Adults- with less independent thought, were pulled in effortlessly. Children were ‘immune’. And the two boys right on the crest of adulthood- still strong enough to resist, but also feeling the pull. This is how you tell a story. And Dark- your narration was brilliant, as always. I’ve just recently come across this genre- and you are *by far* the best narrator, in every way possible. Thank you both!

Absolutely fantastic metaphoric horror -- the monotony of modern Capitalist hegemony, oppressive dominant systems, the loss of childhood wonder, empathy and independent thought, strict and extremist beliefs and structures, take your pick or find your own. I think everyone will be able to relate to this. We should all strive to be like the narrator and break the systems that we learned were inevitable if they are harming those less powerful than us. I just want to say thank you for having this channel. I had a 12 hour drive and listened to you the entire time. My fav story was the school lockdown! I actually didn’t much care for the one you commissioned (secret space station) only because I don’t like mixing space with monsters, for me space is scary because it’s inhospitable to any life so its very presence is daunting; and aliens are scary because they represent the unknown. But it was still written well. Thank you again!!!

Yes another awesome story! I like how it shows us how adults and children see the world differently and are thus affected in different ways depending on what happens. The concept of a dystopian society made up by an eldritch being of endless magnitude in a world of pure fear is awesome and horrifying.

Hi, I'm relatively new to your channel, but I put your stories on EVERY night, I'm totally addicted to the content, and the calm, realistic way you tell them. There have been a few that I've listened to a few times because they were so good. I particularly liked the story about the person working in the museum for rich people, the story about the "whistler" walking past the house every night, and the bartender that served special drinks to his patrons for their stories. I'm fascinated with your stories and storytelling!!!!! Please keep up the good work!!!! Also....what would it entail reading with you???? I'm quite interested in finding out how, because i think id be really good at it!!!!!
