In this first meeting, notice how he asks her questions, then minimises the answers. “It’s a little outta my territory!” “Lot of people don’t touch the drink but it touches them!” He’s actually very cunning, but hiding it behind a mask of obfuscating stupidity. He senses she’s trouble, and she’s hiding something. He lets her check his physique to see if she’s “loose” by the standard of the time of course And the cat shriek he lets out, in some ways is indicative of his cruel nature - we see a lot of that later - but also him testing her nerves. She’s incredibly highly strung. Something he used against her later In no way praise of Stanley’s character, rather a case of brilliant writing from Tennessee Williams and acting from Brando. Bullies can be both physically imposing and psychologically controlling. They’re well aware of what they’re doing & know how to push peoples buttons. Later in the film we see how Stella never gets a fixed “allowance” from Stanley, so that he can control where and when she goes out, if at all His friends are quieter and mild-mannered. He uses just the right amount of swag and control (even something like keeping their voices down or turning off the radio) to keep them in line Sure the movie is probably very slow by today’s standards but it still is a masterclass of writing and drama

Vivien Leigh deserved the Oscar for her fantastic performance. And Marlon Brando was terrifying as Stanley.

Marlon Brando was absolutely robbed for best actor for this. It would have been the first film to win the four acting Oscars, a feat still not achieved to this day

I totally agree. Imagine If Brando had won that Oscar, "A Streetcar" would had received all the acting statuettes (Vivien - Best Actress; Brando - Best Actor; Karl Malden - Best Supporting Actor and Kim Hunter - Best Supporting Actress)

The Oscars have always been a rigged sham. I think that is the real reason he refused to accept it for The Godfather.

As much as I like Humphrey Bogart, his performance in The African Queen is nothing compared to Brando's sensational turn here.

@paulascott5701 6 ай бұрын
@@omarhuanga7139 He was only 47 when he played The Godfather and he was in fantastic physical shape. They had to pad him to make him look heavy and apply prosthetics to age his face. He made Last Tango in Paris the same year and did a back flip from a standing position - who can do that? He was fit and in shape. His acting was so great in The Godfather, people don't notice it. As a fit, youngish man, he perfectly played an old man whose every move showed age, stiffness, soreness, etc. yet he had to exude power. Try that sometime. Every tiny crook of his head or shift of his weight showed "age". He was matchless at acting. It came so easy for him, he took it completely for granted. By the way, don't watch Last Tango....it's deeply disturbing. Just yuck.

I wonder if Marlon wasn't such a tortured soul ,which eventually made him grossly obese and killed him, also which kept him a closeted bisexual, if he'd have been such a great artist, actor? Same goes for Vivien who was an untreated extraordinarily mentally ill person which eventually killed her, too.
