I think it was a mistake to say Rose sabotaged the enemy side as Pink Diamond, remember Blue said that all she had to do was sit around and act un-phased and the rebellion problem would sort itself out. I think calling the diamonds 'space Nazi' goes a little to far, yes they looked upon other species as lesser, but that is a flimsy connection to the Nazis of our world. The problem is we don't know anything about the origin of gems or their culture. Gems are clearly artificially created entities, but we don't know who created them and for what purpose. Can you really call them Nazis if conquering worlds and discarding the feeling of creatures they destroyed for resources is a part of their original programing? I always thought that Bismith created the shatter point after the Pink faked her death and that doing so inspired Bismith to create the weapon. Rose bubbled Bismith because it was a reasonable solution and left her because she felt ashamed that her actions helped drive Bismith to consider murdering other gem, not just the diamonds. Sugar explained that the inspiration for Spinel was a toy she left in a garden as a child and then found a year later and how it had changed without her. The important thing here is that the creators words suggest this was the act of a child, or a person with the mind of a child. It was a mistake, but we don't hold children responsible for the mistakes they make as we do adults because children are not fully developed. Honestly I'd rather just strike the movie from canon and be done with it. What's the problem with Steg??

Wow okay okay okay, to your credit, that is an impressive amount of incorrect data in one response. So I’m going to have to break this down. “I think it was a mistake to say Rose sabotaged the enemy side as Pink Diamond, remember Blue said that all she had to do was sit around and act un-phased and the rebellion problem would sort itself out.” Blue told Pink to not do anything and act un-phased to the rebellion. Yes? And? I don’t actually understand at all how this is relevant to Pink sabotaging the colony side? At all? Blue was telling Pink how to crush the rebellion, this conversation leading to Pinks full realization that the rebellion was never going to win without her out of the picture. But obviously this was not what Pink did, or what she was doing at any point. Pink at no point was actually trying to fight the rebellion, she started it! She told Blue and Yellow they should give up and leave the planet, using the rebellion as a reason. I seriously don’t understand this first part. “I think calling the diamonds 'space Nazi' goes a little to far, yes they looked upon other species as lesser, but that is a flimsy connection to the Nazis of our world. The problem is we don't know anything about the origin of gems or their culture. Gems are clearly artificially created entities, but we don't know who created them and for what purpose. Can you really call them Nazis if conquering worlds and discarding the feeling of creatures they destroyed for resources is a part of their original programming?” Well, one, you are leaving out several actions from the Diamonds that were deliberately parallel to Nazi Germany. The forced tortured/horrific experiments of hurt and shattered gems, leading to both the cluster and the smaller abominations. The hunting and immediate execution of any of their own kind they considered impure. The strict and punishable by execution societal roles and classes of their own kind. And the mass genocide. And your argument that we cannot compare them to Nazis because there is a *chance* that they may have programmed to do this is not only null and void in a meta sense, because the storytelling parallels are their regardless and are meant to invoke this connection. But also in universe, because if the excuse is programming, the fact that a three minute conversation completely rewrote that programming makes that argument bullshit. Because if it is that easy to overwrite their original purpose, then continuing to mass genocide for untold millennia is objectively a choice on their end. The show's premise is on the fact the Gemkind is entirely capable of growth, change, understanding their actions, and beating their ‘purpose’. The Diamonds are wholly responsible for the torture, murder, and subjugation they inflicted. They are Space Fascists. “I always thought that Bismuth created the shatter point after the Pink faked her death and that doing so inspired Bismuth to create the weapon. Rose bubbled Bismuth because it was a reasonable solution and left her because she felt ashamed that her actions helped drive Bismuth to consider murdering other gem, not just the diamonds.” Just factually incorrect. Bismuth made the Breaking point before Rose shattered herself. As Evidenced by. 1. Her not knowing about the Diamond corruption attack. 2. Her saying ‘It was Pink wasn’t it?’ When she found out. Showing us she thought “Pink” was still alive. 3. Her being told the entire story from Steven and her responding, “I guess she followed my advice”. Directly stating she didn’t fucking know and it happened after. “Sugar explained that the inspiration for Spinel was a toy she left in a garden as a child and then found a year later and how it had changed without her. The important thing here is that the creators words suggest this was the act of a child, or a person with the mind of a child. It was a mistake, but we don't hold children responsible for the mistakes they make as we do adults because children are not fully developed.” This is almost, but not entirely, irrelevant. I will absolutely give you the point that Rebecca said she got the inspiration from that even from her own life, and from the fact that she was trying to invoke a similar feeling or nostalgic loss from Spinel's story. But inspiration does not imply full 1-1 copy. We do not know, in universe, why this event happened. Pink’s motivation or lack thereof is unknown right now and all we can go on is what we know about her personality at this point in her life. Which is, in love with life, terrified of the Diamonds and their control over anything she loves. Terrified of her own power and getting close to anyone. Amazingly caring but not entirely aware of how to communicate or respect others. And would *never purposely harm another living thing*. Bad things happen around her, and people say it’s because of her. She has never wanted to *hurt* anyone. But she has been told and people tell themselves. That she hurt *everyone*. “What's the problem with Steg??” So much. He is an overly sexual incest machine, it’s gross. To be clear, *a* Fusion of Steven and Greg would have been fine. Fusion is not an allegory for sex by default. It is the way Steg Looks/Behaves/Hits on every other gem/ and ORGASMS PEARL INTO REMEMBERING that I am uncomfortable with. “Honestly I'd rather just strike the movie from canon and be done with it.” Me too dude.

@@CherryTreatsArt I'm just going to number the points as the come up. 1) I think you missed my point which was just that I don't think Pink actively did anything on the non-rebellion side of the war. I think she was just treated as a figure head and the gems under her orchestrated and implemented that whole side of the war. This isn't a point against Pink, in fact I think it show just how little control of her own life she possessed even in her own colony. 2) My point wasn't that there aren't any parallels. Sure we know that gems can be shown the errors of their way and can choose to go against their programming and it doesn't matter how quickly this can be done what matters is if no one ever showed them it was wrong then when could they have changed? If a child is always pinching people because they think it's fun and stops immediately when you pinched them back, realizing that it's hurtful, that doesn't mean that the child was ignoring that they were being hurtful before that. It was information they didn't have. Additionally, the diamonds changing their ways in three minutes was a result of rushed bad writing, Peridot is an example for how long that should have taken. 3) Well your first point would only work if the diamonds did their corrupting attack minutes after Pink faked her death and regenerated, but there is no time scale for long long after faking her death that the other diamond came and did the corrupting attack. We also know from the centipede gem that the diamond at least attempted to withdraw their own forced before making the attack. Your other points I can't argue. As I said it was something I thought, you can call it headcanon, I just find it to be more meaningful that way. I could say that was just a side effect of weak writing to reform Bismith to Steven's side in a rush, but you'd have the same opinion of it as you did in the point about the diamonds. 4) Authorial intent is a valid thing to cite when arguing what happened in a story. It doesn't say anything bad about Pink that she forgot about Spinel. The argument just paints it as the mistake of a child, a forgiveable mistake. 5) lol those are all very good points about Steg, I was just curious as you mentioned him but didn't go into details. 6) I think we are much more in agreement than not, I posted a extensive response Tumblr against someone doing a huge break down of why Pink is a villain.

@@The1Ryu Dude your valid, this has been a very enjoyable back and forth on my end. So, 1.I think I did miss the point of your statement initially, that being said I do personally still disagree, though we're definitely in head canon territory now about how Rose handled the Pink side of the rebellion. I see it as the first time she had any real control over her surrounding, not much but some, and her leading the Homeworld forces astray from the Rebellion to keep it safe being one of her first acts of autonomy *as* a Diamond. The entire rebellion is for Pink an allegory for her, recognizing her abuse/ recognizing her ability and desire to do something about it/excreting her will for the first time. But I actually see where your coming from as well and I think it's a good take on the situation. 2. I don't think the child analogy can be presented to all of gem kind and definitely not the other Diamonds, so I can't reconcile their actions as anything other the willful fascism, and their ability to reform from that abhorrent writing. Rebecca put their action over a moral event horizon that she could have never properly pulled back from. You can't make a Firelord character and then treat them like a Zuko. 3. Bismuth arc was another that was handled very poorly yeah, I personally like that canonical timeline with the attack and everything, but wish they had addressed basically everything else differently. And I did not mean to imply that I thought the Diamond attack was nigh instantaneous, but I do think it was rushed, within only a few days form the event. As evidence from the Homeworld gems not being properly evacuated in a wild rush. 4. Yeah I see your interpretation as likely but I don't think we can actually argue this specific point further as we have no canon info to work with. We can only headcanon and predict for now. 5. Yeeeeeah... 6. Discussion about media interpretation is always quite fun for me. So I always go into it in good faith, any hyperbole or emotion in my arguments are meant to be in good fun. Though I will admit I've gotten genuinely invested is the Rose debate, probably too much, since I tend to empathize and see myself in the character.

@@CherryTreatsArt I've enjoyed it to, I rarely respond to people I agree with, so it's usually just fighting and getting cursed at. 1) Ya it's a minor point really. 2) You don't feel that White actions, especially at the end when Steven made her blush, was basically just her acting like a child having a temper tantrum. True, but the Firelord never acted like Zuko, all the diamonds do act like children. 3) Still enough time for Bismith to create the weapon and show it to Rose. But I can yield to what the dialogue shows. 4) Fair enough 5) Still makes be lol 6) What really frustrates me is the show, the fans can and will think whatever they want, but why is Steven in the show being so unfair to Rose. it's like 'Storm in the Room' never happened.

I also don’t think Rose and Pearl were in a relationship when she was with Greg. Either Rose and Pearl broke up and “stayed friends.” Or they were never in a relationship, and Pearl kept vying for her. And just never acted on her feelings and just kept waiting for Rose to finally choose her. But by the time Rose met Greg, it was too late.

Agree. I also have a different interpretation of what Pearl meant by being “fine” with the men. Not so much as in a “it’s whatever I genuinely don’t care” way but in a “human lives are short, Rose is having fun but they’re never anything serious, you’ll have her attention for a moment but I’ll continue being her friend for thousands of years.” Like I don’t really see them as being in an open relationship with poly negotiations. I think Pearl was in love with Rose and it colored their friendship in the way that many queer people have experienced where the friendship becomes a sort of ambiguous situationship. But I don’t think Rose really knew of that love as romantic or reciprocated romantic feelings or attraction

I think they did love eachother (rose and pearl) but the issue is there was still always te tention about did pearl love rose or did she love her because she was her diamond. pearl did tend to put rose on a pedestal at times still and seemed to jave a issue with seeing them as equals. like how pearl kept throwing herself in danger for rose instead of fighting together and seeing rose cared for her to and then eventually created a gap between them. one of thereasons rose was so happy when pearl came up with the ideafor rose to pretend to be a quarts was because people could treat her normally and not revere her.... but as much as they loved eachother they both held eachother back a bit....pearl KNOWS rose was/is pink which probably does color the way pearl treats her with the old habit of being in charge like she was a pink.....while pearl was held back because even if shetrly loved rose.....it did hold back pearl a bit because pearl did still rely on her a bit as 'her diamond, her rose' who she was put to serve. pearl's way of loving tended to not demand a equal treatment.... and i think thats what drew rose to greg....greg was upfront about how he felt and what he wanted and there wasno debate of it being his choice unlike how with pearl you could say she was still fullfilling her directive of making her diamond happy even if rose new there was more to it. and greg called out the behaviour he didnt like with rose andwanted to be seen as a equal and he didnt think she was above him to to speak. and this helped rose grow in a new way because greg pushed her in that direction that pearl couldn't do. considering how rose loooked at her inthe flashback i do think rose has feelings for pearl....but it does raise on if they ever discussed it properly and it wasnt to the degree of say ruby and saffire

@@R.444- Honestly? I feel like this is the same for a lot of people; their own life experiences color how they interpret a lot of the character motivations and how they would feel within this emotionally charged but very vaguely written show. That said, my own life experiences colored my interpretation of Rose and Pearl's relationship just like that. I had a friend, a best friend. We were so close and knew each other for so long that we got along like we were made to be friends. I would platonically say that she was my soul mate... Except not platonically because I can say for sure that I was in love with her. I'm not a lesbian, or bi. Ace is probably the best label. She was straight and constantly looking for a boyfriend. But I loved her in a "I want to grow old and pay taxes and die together" way. In a "I just want to be part of your life and you part of mine forever" way. I knew that she wanted a boyfriend and a husband and to get married and start a family and have kids and stuff. But it's like... I didn't mind? No relationship she would get into would ever have what *we* had. And any guy who ever made her feel like shit about herself I would be there to tell her she was the most kind, amazing, beautiful person I had ever known and it was that guy's loss, and the next guy will be better or he doesn't deserve you and mean it. I wanted to beat anyone who ever made her feel bad with a trash can! And I was content to just be there even knowing she couldn't feel the same about me. Until her last boyfriend before our friendship fell apart. Not the same as Pearl's situation mind you but well... I was fine with the idea that she would have special men in her life. What haters don't seem to realise is that the crystal gems never questioned her actions, since they basically thought of her as this amazing leader who could do no wrong. So this severely stunted her growth as a person, along with 6000 years of just wandering the earth in relative peace without fear of the diamonds attacking. Also, maybe it was a bit of a stretch that Greg was the only one to beg to be taken seriously (considering she's been with many humans), but that did get to her since she did the same with the diamonds and likely realised she was still a bit like them. When it comes to PD becoming Rose, I saw it as her way of rejecting identity, culture, and abuse from the diamonds. When you've been abused, one of the first things people tend to do is completely separate themselves from the very source of their trauma. Even if I wasn't thinking about the reasons in the video above, I don't think I'd blame someone for wanting to separate themselves from their abuser(s). It's things like this that make me sorta block out what most critics think of her. It's like they never bothered to see it from *her* point of view. She was literally born into this universe and her best mentors abused and terrified the absolute shit out of her. She literally had no one to guide her. It terrifies me how quick people are to blame the *victims* before ever realizing that their *abusers* are the ones you should go after.

Rose's story was literally told backwards. The show was Steven Universe, not Rose Quartz. So we 1st meet Rose at the END of her development and post-mortem, which pedestals her as this perfect being who had all the answers and those close to her still grieving. The more we learn about her past, the more we saw her flaws, and the type of person she USED to be before the rebellion. I always look at two different scenes when it comes to Rose and her development. The way she acted and spoke when Stevonnie was reliving her memories, she was literally acting like a spoiled child-which she was, then I look at how she acted and spoke when she met Garnet on Earth. The show doesn't tell us how much time has passed between those two events, but I do assume that Rose grew enough maturity to, at least, be trusted with a colony, then later learning how the other diamonds treated her, it made perfect sense. But if you were take all of the flashback and put them in chronological order and watched them that way, most people would love Rose then. There was literally no where in the series that hinted that Rose even suspected Diamonds or other homeworld gems returning to Earth, Steven been stuck with those consequences, or even the cluster. At the end of Rose's story, it was thousands of years after the war, there weren't any other visits from homeworld(so it could be assumed that the diamondss were pretty damn sure that all gems on Earth were destroyed and that was later confirmed by Yellow Diamond), most of the corrupted gems were bubbled(so the other Crystal Gems would not need her help), curing the corruption seemed like a lost cause, her and the other gems just seemed to be living life with no big mission, and she fell in love with Greg. We also learned from her that she adores humans and the human experience. She seemed to experience everything, except being a mother, so she decided to be a mother. We were never told if Rose knew prior to pregnancy that she would have to give up her form or during the pregnancy....I'm leaning more toward she learned during pregnancy(especially considering how pregnant she was when she made the tape and Greg probably only just found out at that point too considering how happy he was at the beginning of the video and then went silent after she gave her speech), and like any mother, she did not want to rob her son a chance at life. Yea, like any other person, she had flaws, but she learned. Srry, this has always been a sore spot for me on how people vilify Rose. Imagine if Zuko from Avatar started off as friend of the group, but we later learned of the shitty things he did-wouldn't be much of a redemption arc if we started off loving the guy.

Respectfully I disagree, Especially with the Zuko comparison. If we were to at zukos story from the end we'd simply be led back to what made zuko sympathetic in the first place. His quest to restore his honor and return home. We'd also be led to the steps zuko took to become better and make up for his actions. One of the whole reasons as to why pink dimound is hated is that she never took any of these steps he did. She never actually faced any consequences for any of her actions, Spinel nothing, all the gems that shattered in the war against herself, bubbling bismuth and lastly her treatment of her old pearl volleyball. Non of any of these are never resolved by her only her son which was the straw that broke the camels back for people. She had done some good don't get me wrong, but she also had plenty of unresolved problems that became everyone else's problems. Even the in the show amethyst shows her frustration about dealing with problems caused by pink dimound that she shouldn't have had to deal with. That's all

Yeah I totally agree ! However, White was never truly redeemed nor fogiven. You see that Steven is constantly trying to avoid the Diamonds, is feeling awkward and uneasy around them, and in Future he even has an intrusive thought about killing White by maing her smash her head against a pillar 😰 The thing is that, he can't really deal with them. Killing them is not an option and it would go against every the Crystal Gems ever fought for. And they are still Diamonds, the most powerful creatures. And I think that, when you see them during the series, it's hard to forgive them after everything they've done. So I think that it's pretty realistic and on character for them to follow Steven's instructions without really understanding them foundamentally, and it's an inbetween working well enough for Steven to settle on this since they don't try to hurt people anymore. I would believe in a Blue and Yellow redemption, seeing them in the last episode of S5, but not White. White isn't someone who regret anything. It's how I personnaly see it anyway !

I love how well made this vid is. Another point that might be interesting to note regarding Spinel is that she most likely had been given to Pink after her original Pearl was taken away. Spinel was likely a ‘replacement’ puppy. The other Diamonds couldn’t seem to fathom that Pink had formed an emotional attachment to her Pearl that she lacked with Spinel. That wasn’t Spinel’s fault. But Pink didn’t just want *ANY* friend. She wanted *HER* friend! And that created this wedge in Pink and Spinel’s relationship that never went away.

Definitely a good point, not only did she likely have trouble getting passed missing P Pearl. She also had every reason to try to *never get close to any gem again* because if she cares to much, they might get hurt. But despite that I do think Pink had genuine affection for Spinel.

Either way, I’m glad this video exists, this Rose hate bandwagon has gone off the rails and seeing a coordinated push back is refreshing. I remember the week the movie was released I had seen a post on Tumblr of someone suggesting if Rose had lived to raise Steven that she would have been annoyed by him and left like she had with Spinel, which, just... *NO* What doesn’t help is that we’re seeing Rose’s journey backwards and without her being there to give her side of things Steven has to figure it all out himself. A real shame too, Rose loved Steven more than anything, but he doesn’t know what to make of her. And so much of the animosity between them could be solved in just one conversation between the two of them. IDK, it’s sad to me since I’m pretty close to my Mom...

If I was Pink Diamond I wouldn't have trusted any of the replacements for her original Pearl, thinking they were probably spies for Yellow and/or Blue and/or White. Over the course of many centuries, her new "sensible" Pearl might have proven herself to merit Pink's confidence, but Spinel--even if she wasn't an outright Diamond Authority plant--was way too wacky to trust with serious responsibility or secrets. (For that matter, it was demonstrated that there were some things that Pink/Rose felt she couldn't share with Pearl.)
@thewoollyviking5928
@thewoollyviking5928 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely see your point there. It also doesn’t help that Spinel was meant to represent everything the other Diamonds were pushing Rose away from. To Rose, the other Diamonds gave her two choices, either leave Spinel and everything she represents behind to act like a more serious Diamond, or be seen as a child forever and give up on ever gaining their respect and thus their love. It was a completely fucked situation no matter how you look at it and the fault falls completely on the Diamonds for forcing Rose to have to make that decision at all.

Something else to point out is the only time a gem physically cannot go against a diamonds will is when a diamond says "I order you". Pink told Spinel to stand still and continue to play their games. She didn't order Spinel. Also, Pearl clearly knew about her as well. So, it makes no sense for fans to call out Rose when Pearl was right there too

I know this was a year ago (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think I got a reason Pink couldn't go back to Spinel, it's because they had destroyed the big warp pad on earth. As stated, it was Peridot's mission to fix, check up on the cluster, and leave. The difference between the bigger warp pas was that it was possible to travel even farther in space (As shown in Steven Universe in the movie + Future). Even if she wanted to go back to Spinel, she couldn't, they had to destroy it. They couldn't fix it until Peridot first appeared. (Great vid btw)

And yeah she did leave Spinel b4 she knew what was happening to Earth, but I'm assuming it was only for like, a day or two (And yes leaving someone there for even a day is bad, but she's been locked in a room for thousands of years, that's what she thought was normal growing up.)?? Then she discovered intelligent life on Earth, and had the weight of an entire planet and all of it's life on her shoulders, plus a rebellion and alter-ego.

I said before and I'll repeat it again. I think we forget that, like Steven, Rose/Pink is a victim of trauma, years of neglect and abuse can effect how a person interacts with the world and people around them (speaking from experience). Rose/Pink grew to love her planet and the life it contained, and I think think that with that growth of love, she also grew as a person (or gem) and I believe if the diamonds had listen to her, there would be a lot less tears, trauma, and mess (but heck, then we wouldn't have a show). I'm not saying what rose/pink did is justified or how those who were effected by here are not justified in their feelings, I'm saying we need to stop painting Rose/Pink as the bad guy of SU.

i absolutely adored this. i am an abuse victim myself who abused others and Rose is a huge comfort for me because it showed that even us, children who grew up in abuse and weren't taught how to love, can do good things and be able to live. also, i would like to add my own defense about the new SU Future stuff: Pink Pearl. In Future, we discover that Pink Diamond, with her scream, hurt Pink Pearl (her first Pearl) so badly her eye couldn't get cured. In Pink Pearl's own words, Pink Diamond was having a tantrum because the Diamonds wouldn't give her a colony and PP was caught in the crossfire. This happens to abuse victims as well, we hurt other without wanting to because we are unstable. After that, Pink Pearl was taken from her and our Pearl was given to her. Pearl didn't know Pink had that scream power, which shows us that she never used it again and that she never had any tantrums anymore because of how she hurt Pink Pearl, bottling up her emotions so she can't hurt anyone she cares about. This is actually tragic to think that Pink Diamond couldn't apologize to Pink Pearl because she was taken like a parent would take a broken toy from their kid and that when she knew that she hurt her only friend so badly she decided to keep her emotions on check... damn.

My life was eerily similar to the trauma Rose Quartz endured. She became my favorite character due to how relatable she was to me. The shit she endured…it was almost like the crewniverse came into my house and wrote a story out of my own personal experiences. I really had every experience Rose did, minus being a space princess. Not being treated as an equal to my sisters, locked in a room and neglected, physically and mentally abused, blamed for a lot of problems, developing anger issues but trying really hard not to be as awful as my own abusers. I am an adult now, but I watched SU as a teen. I grew up with Steven himself. I remember wanting to write a thank you note to R. Sugar for making a character so relatable to me. It felt like I had a voice or something I suppose. Like someone cared about the trauma I went through. But then my favorite and most relatable character was painted as awful, and seemed hated by her own son. (SU:F) Whenever I think about SU I just get super depressed, maybe it’s the lack of resolution for Rose. I’ll never forget how much as a growing teen I cried when Blue admit she abused her own daughter, and how she thought her child was a failure. I remember my body going numb and how much I wanted to run away like Pink did. In some regard, I had hope my own parents could apologize for their wrongdoings and understand my feelings. In the end, I liked the message Steven Universe gave that abusers could…learn from their mistakes. I never saw my parents as evil, but they certainly did leave mental scars. The only thing that hurts with the ending of this franchise... (I hope not permanently.) Is how Pink is never understood by not only the fanbase- but her own son. The sense of bitterness Steven ends the series with is so painful and uncomfortable for me to see. I understand the concept of “don’t live in your parents shadows.” However, being the diamonds are redeemed and their abused child is painted in an “evil” light…it’s so uncomfortable to look at as a victim of domestic abuse.

Only allowing for her to be a perfect victim is terrifying, that "well obviously they're just going to keep being like this, so it's all on you" mindset whenever something goes wrong or you can't stop your abuser from harming other people can cause real damage irl.

It's not reasonable to portray or view a character as bad for not having been able to perfectly control or prevent the harmful actions of their abusive family, or for not having been able to perfectly save everyone from the situation that abusive family had created. She had flaws - she's shown being insensitive towards humans out of either ignorance or not taking their feelings seriously enough (or some mix of both), and I do personally see silencing Pearl about the fake shattering as cruel (it is one thing I feel could have been safely avoided). Difference is most people don't seem to talk about these kinds of flaws in the far more thoughtful way people talk about the flaws Lapis or Peridot have. Instead Pink ends up being blamed for her own abuse and seen as outright bad by both fans and the writers, it's assumed she could have always done more in situations where we know very little about what _anyone_ would have even been able to do or not do. It's... kind of horrifying, honestly.

@@m0m055 It's not false, we just aren't going to agree. On a different comment thread on this video you mention seeing what happened to Spinel as Pink abandoning her. My take is that the diamonds decisions directly caused both Pink and Spinel to end up in that situation, the diamonds had left both with few if any other options (creating Spinel to basically be an entertaining pet for Pink, for example, when Pink doesn't seem to have wanted that), something that both the writers and many fans seem to blame on Pink for not being able to prevent or fix by bringing Spinel back from the garden. That's part of what I'm referring to. Other people have mentioned it in comments on this video, but irl you don't always have the option to safely or legally take others with you when fleeing abuse. Pets, siblings, sometimes children, and other victims of that abuse can often end up left behind. Believing this was Pink's fault, assuming there must have been more she could do but didn't want or care to, assuming she deliberately abandoned Spinel or didn't want to go back, especially without knowing for sure that _anyone_ could even go back for her, it sits uncomfortably close to the same horrific victim blaming real life abuse victims can face when they weren't able to bring others facing abuse with them. This is less relevant (especially as the comment wasn't directed at me) but I particularly and _strongly_ disagree with how you used "Blue and Yellow don't care, they never have" as a reason that Pink doesn't think about how her actions effect others, in that other comment. That would be a very reasonable and understandable thing for anyone facing the same kind of abuse to believe.

I have the perfect reason Rose didn’t go back for Spinel: she literally could not without endangering literally everyone. First off, only Pink Diamond herself and Pink’s Pearl would know Spinel even existed. Rose or Pearl trying to get Spinel would reveal both their identities, ruining everything. After the war, the galaxy warp was destroyed, the Crystal Gems were cut off from the rest of the universe, leading to two scenarios: 1) Rose could not fix the galaxy warp (Peridot had no proof Steven’s healing powers could fix the galaxy warp). 2) Rose could fix the galaxy warp, but doing so would expose Earth to Homeworld (who we know were still monitoring Earth even after the war cuz of the cluster), notifying them and probably starting Gem War II. Also hot take: Rose has very little to actually do with Steven’s trauma, yes she left all her baggage behind, but his experiences are mostly the fault of, you know, his *guardians* .

Before shattering herself, couldn’t she as Pink Diamond, make plans for Spinel. Not risky, but instructing a gem to play with her or take her to the human zoo? Spinel and the zoo humans would get along and it would be normal and justifiable for Pink Diamond to do. Considering how much Blue revered Spinel after she was found and Pink’s old zoo, Blue didn’t know where Pink’s garden was. She could have given one of the diamonds the location. Even under the theory that Pink believed the diamonds didn’t love her, moving Spinel out of the garden into a different “respectable” place would work. Leave her on homeworld, but don’t isolate her.

I grew up in an abusive home and see myself in rose, I saw my little sister in pink Pearl and spinel being left behind. But the fact of the matter is that if I had tried to get my little sister out too not only would it have been a lot to ask of my partner, but they would’ve called the police. Because they did on me. They reported me as a missing person. Now since I’m adult I was able to just talk to the detective and tell him I left on my own and he removed me from the list, but if I’d taken my sister too? That could’ve become a kidnapping story and CPS wouldn’t be of help because it was rarely physical. And it’s hard to get evidence of emotional and mental abuse.

I honestly think Rose is the most fascinating character of the entire show because her presence is felt throughout almost everything that happens. She is the catalyst behind so many things, both good and bad. But unlike evey other character she isn't there any more to tell her part of the story. To give context through her perspective. The closest thing to that we get in the show are those dreams/flashbacks sequences. And even then, we experience these through Steven. I truly think that if Rose was somehow still alive, the discussion around her character would be very different from whst it is currently. The way the narrative treats Rose like the spawn of Satan when actually it's all about perspective is kinda gross. Out of all the characters, she was the first one that actively tried to change things for the better and to empathize with other life forms. Heck, you can even see in flashback episodes that out of all our main crystal gems she was the only one who was actively interacting with humans and tried to understand their cultures (except for Amethyst since she was made on Earth). Pearl and Garnet showed no genuine interest to the lives on Earth. And to me that goes to show that most crystal gems were only fighting for their kind and not Earth itself

I think a major character motive on Pink's part, her pain at the hands of her "family" and her recognition of her place made her hate her status and hate herself. It think that was part of why she was so desperate to change; yes, it would be a final escape from her problems, but it would also be a kind of final victory in her war for gemkind, since she would become something so definitively against what she was that it could never be undone, not by White, not by anybody. Escape was the only way she had to take her power back, to turn her life around, to find a version of her she could love again.

Something that I’ve been thinking about in regards to Spinel for a while now. I don’t think Pink ever wanted to go back to her. We see Pink in a flashback indulging Spinel’s games but not really enjoying them. Then when she is finally being taken seriously and being given a colony she doesn’t want to bring her childish toys along. I say toys because that’s what Spinel was designed to be, not necessarily what she really is. Anyway she decides to leave her behind, probably expecting the hyperactive Spinel to eventually get bored of the game and find other ways to entertain herself. Was it shitty to leave her behind like that? Yeah. Do I understand why she would do that? Also yeah. Spinel reminds me of a friend I had in elementary school. Over time I became increasingly annoyed by her presence and wanted to move on. I wrote a letter saying that I didn’t want to be friends anymore and that I was sorry, not telling her why. She ran to an adult that kind of in a way forced me to continue being her friend until we eventually grew apart and faded from each other’s lives as time went on. All this to say I can understand wanting to leave a friend behind and if at the time I could’ve given a little command and never had to see her again I probably would’ve. Again, it’s still shitty to leave people behind like that but I feel I can empathize with that decision Pink made

Steven universe is the only show in wich someone spends like half of her life trying to end slavery and then the fans make her out to be the bad guy somehow. Also the most insane part is when they are saying that Rose is bad beacuse she leaving made Peal sad and she only did to escape responsibility, like escuse HER for commiting suicide. At least this is how i interpreat it since i cant really see any other version, she chosed to not exist anymore, how messed up that is. In the art books it was already made clear that she had next no nothing self worth and upon that came the fact that her rebellion ended horribly and all the people who followed her turned into monsters. I think it ads up. Also as someone who was obsessed with creation, still wanted to make at least one good thing in her life, so having Steven was a two birds with one rock thing.

Oh yes, the women trying to find her freedom and run from an abusive home and family = The worst possible person ever The literally space nazis who genocided thousands of planets and drove pink to madness = Our friends and totally forgivable Honestly I think the reason why the characters hate pink is because they placed her in a pedestal, when it is exactly what she did not want to be in. She wanted to be on everyones level when she turned into rose, yet they did placed her in a pedestal anyway, while they themselves take responsibility for nothing.

Absolutely based video. I woke up this fine Saturday morning reflecting on the show and how much this character's representation was intriguing. As Steven is the main lense, he experiences Rose like many other children - as a perfect, loving, helpful, forward thinking, super mom (tho she is not physically present), and as he grows learns of her pain, difficulty, hard decisions, and humanity. And this specific video expounded on that even further to me, that there's more to that pain and difficulty than just "pink parent bad", but a history and pattern of triple threat abuse from the grandparents. Beautiful analysis. Thank you for helping me redeem and realign this character in my head. I've always loved her, and wanted to love like her

People who blame pink diamond for the diamonds horrible and unforgivable behavior are so pitiful. Pink diamond suffered horrible maltreatment from the diamonds SO much she wanted to literally escape them. Her status and prior “good” contact with them didn’t matter to her as long she was free from their abuse. That’s how conniving, cruel and horrible the other diamonds are. Pink diamond literally had to fake her death for them to finally leave her alone. She knew the diamonds were vindictive and cruel but she literally had no clue they would go so far as to corrupt rose quartz’s team and THEIR LITERAL TEAM. yep. And then they got forgiven, but pink diamond doesn’t. The diamonds, the people that abused their citizens, shattered them and other horrible things 😊!! Verses pink diamond, the literal contrary and exemplary of literally kindness 🙃

Another scenario for the Spinel situation. Imagine you have a long-time family friend who is your comfort from a family of abuse. But you have no control over your emotions because nobody treats them fairly and wants to shun you from expressing any opinions. Even from an abusive relationship. So one day, you lash out, out of control, unpredictable. You are both yourself but the abuser. And you hurt the only person important to you. You are traumatized, trying to reach out for help and trying to fix it, but they were taken away from you. And they were replaced by assigned family friends to act like a half of them. And one of them got too attached to you, but not able to understand what you are going through and never wanting to let you leave. Even when there is a chance you can earn to be treated fairly by the parents whose toxicity are like high mountains of expectations… They promised you can return with your friend if you reach that expectation. Both trauma and high expectations over your shoulder How would you handle this situation?

Thank you for this! I have personal, emotional reasons for wanting to think well of Rose, myself. I see myself in her in some ways. She and I have both made character mistakes in the past, we have both hurt other people without really meaning to be malevolent, and we have both had to try to improve and move on, sometimes making difficult choices that are going to result in someone being hurt no matter what we do. The part that her detractors all seem to ignore is that she saved billions of lives on Earth, that she made a place for Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl to be free in ways they never could on Homeworld. When I see that some people are so willing to ignore this to focus solely on how she harmed Volleyball, Spinel, or Bismuth, I feel a bit hopeless myself. I start internalizing this narrative of "No matter how much you do to help others, the harm you have done permanently brands you as a bad person." I can _never_ end up doing as much good as Rose did in her life, so if even _she_ is unworthy of forgiveness, what hope do I ever have of being a decent human being, despite my best efforts? So, yeah, thank you very much for your defense of Rose. It really helps me feel better about myself. ❤

I think a lot of why people hate pink diamond/rose is because we see how much pain she caused in the characters we grew to love, and because she can't redeem herself. When pearl uses garnet to be sardonyx, garnet feels incredibly betrayed, and we see that for a few episodes. But we also see them making up, and pearl explaining why she did what she did. For rose, she lived her life, and she died. And then her family finds out that she wasn't all that they thought she was. We see them hurt, physically and emotionally, and we see them grieve. And those are characters we love, whose development and adoration of rose we know well. So seeing them hurt makes us angry. You've convinced me that rose doesn't deserve all the flack she gets, but I also think it's valuable to say that it's completely understandable why the characters are angry about what she did. Whether or not she lied to protect her family, she still lied. Whether or not she meant to leave steven all her problems, she still did. Whether or not she meant to leave spinel standing in one spot for six thousand years, she still did. She did what she thought was best in nearly every situation, but that doesn't mean the people who were hurt by her choices aren't allowed to feel... Hurt.

Whilst I do not personally agree with you on the whole "space Nazi" thing, I do agree with everything else. To quote an anime I love; "When you notice an insect on the ground, do you stop to consider it a fool? I absolutely adore Pink Diamond but I took a different understanding for Spinel's abandonment, so I understood it as it's like when you've had a best friend or close friend and you just slowly grow apart to the point you just stop bothering. I think Pink thought Spinel had the initiative to go back to Homeworld of her own volition as opposed to actually playing the stay here as long as possible game, just like when we hang out with a friend, we assume they'd just go home after a bit, yeah they'd feel hurt, obviously but we wouldn't expect or assume them to stay there all that time, it's why we see Spinel as more of a tragedy because we've seen other gems not think for themselves.

I honestly don't know why people find Steg disgusting. It's a platonic fusion between Father and son. If you're uncomfortable with your own body and your own confidence in your own sexuality you may see it as more than that. I grew up in an open family where I was allowed to grow and ask questions from moment to moment. Now I finally know who I am. At one point I thought I was a masculine presenting woman. Another time I thought I was gender fluid. And now I am finally at peace being non-binary. I am also asexual yet I can listen to the most raunchiest songs, dance to it (horribly), and crack the dirtiest minded jokes you have ever heard. We had open discussions in my family. So I was never curious. Never had to wonder. For a while I thought I was a broken person. I felt no sexual attraction but felt attracted to people. But then I discovered aesthetic attraction is a thing. I felt the same thing I would feel towards a pretty flower as I would a pretty person. It was the same. I didn't like them BECAUSE of the look. It was just a description to me. Steg, to me, is just the embodiment of old rock confidence. The era Greg comes from. Look up performances, their opening moments on stage, plus Steven is a teenager and who doesn't want to show off as a teenager? I am sure the last thing a Father and son are thinking of is anything sexual just because they fused. He is oozing confidence and that is amazing. He is a combo of the little Steven we saw rocking out on stage during the Beach Palooza and Greg the ex rocker. Meshing together for this ultimate personality. Full of the love and confidence they have together, for each other, and on the stage as performers and a family. People who make it incestuous kinda read too much into things. That's like this story I ran into where this wife wanted them to kick out their adopted son for coming out as gay and called her husband a pedophile when he didn't. Or called him gross because he gave him a hug and kiss on his forehead like he's done since the kid had been 4. Love doesn't change then and it doesn't change because you magically fuse together.

The show had every chance to make fusion not sexual or romantic but flip a coin and thats the chance that the fusion in the show is going to be either or even both. Its not even trying to be slick with it. Garnet spreading her legs to accept Amethyst into her ( Sexual), Garnet and Pearl practicing fusion with Steven by doing a wall slam (Sexual), Lesbian rocks show affection for each other and protects each other while also fusing (Romantic ), Pearl being jealous and salty by fusing with Rose in front of him making Greg look like a cuck (Sexual). Lapis and Jasper doing a strange co dependent toxic r-word play (sexual) if it wasn't being treated this way it wouldn't have been so dramatic and painful and if it were just a non sexual relationship, it would've be framed as two battle junkies having it out and no one would take that seriously because thats fun for the audience. Put the R word in there now the scene makes sense because it dark, serious , and messed up. Fluorite is a big flag saying "LOOK AT ME IM A POLYGAMOUS RELATIONSHIP". Now you have a Father and Son doing a fusion, a concept at this point that has extremely questionable yet obvious implications. Then we get a hunky dude with a six pack sweating that sings Pearl into a memory orgas^m. Its a very gross implication.

I only recently got into Steven Universe and watched the entirety of it, including the movie and Future. Rose/Pink has gotta be one of my favorite characters, and that's saying something since this show is full of great characters. She strikes me as someone who thought very little of herself, no doubt due to how the other Diamonds treated her. Almost all of her "evil" actions can be explained this way. She left Spinel in the garden because she didn't believe Spinel was loyal enough to listen and wait all that time. She faked her own shattering because she had no idea the other Diamonds would be so distraught by the loss of her they'd retaliate in the way they did and grieve her for centuries. Rose had flings while knowing Pearl was in love with her because she assumed Pearl's love was a product of her "programming" because no one could ever genuinely love her, right? That's also why she didn't take Greg's feelings for her seriously at first either. And she gave up her life to give birth to Steven because, like with the Diamonds, she never would have thought the Crystal Gems would have been so lost without her. Rose hurt a lot of people without ever meaning to, and she ended up hurting them because she was unable to love herself as much as others loved her. She was unable to see how she could mean much of anything to anyone. That's entirely the fault of the Diamonds for their abuse and neglect towards her, but I don't think they intended to hurt her as they did. I think they were so wrapped up in their own images they let that turn them into abusers. Like a lot of abusive parents, I think they did what they did out of some messed up sense of love. It doesn't make what they did right but I honestly don't think they meant to hurt Pink. After all, they did grieve her for centuries as I mentioned. I see Rose as a cautionary tale. You may think no one loves you and that no one would miss you if you were gone but there are people in your life who you mean the world to. You're somebody's Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond. I think that's one of the most beautiful messages this show has, one I know I needed to hear as a kid, and it makes me so sad that so few people who watched the show were able to hear it. Sorry for the mini essay.

as someone who grew up in an abusive household and had pets, the whole "rose saw her companions as toys" lowkey triggers trauma from my parents blaming me for pet death and saying that I view them as toys. I tried despite my clumsy "up in the clouds" self failing to see the seriousness of the situation at times. I have so much trauma from losing them and I still have to move on even though I haven't forgiven myself. In fact, the only one who didn't view them as items was me, because my family didn't even bother getting a vet and I had to play doctor as a child. I tried my best. I was never taught how to care for someone, I faced neglect. I literally had to teach myself responsibility and empathy. Rose is a rare image of the abused child that was given a pet situation. A situation where a child has to balance survival, responsibility and mental escapism. And it's so shitty to see people victim blame rose for stuff that were genuinely just mistakes of a child stuck in a horrible situation. When you're a child, especially an abused emotionally neglected one, you're bound to think "selfishly" because that's what children do: they act on emotions

I binge watched Steven Universe when I was twelve, after years of watching the occasional episode when it was on TV. I saw myself in Pink Diamond, she's one of the only characters that I've related to so strongly. I thought she was a really interesting character and enjoyed watching her story unfold. She did everything I would have done, and that made her so believable. I engaged a lot with the fandom on KZbin and Roblox at the time, and with some friends who had also seen the show. They all hated Pink Diamond, and said really hurtful things about her. They had the same points mentioned in the video that people usually talk about. It was really upsetting to hear them say these things because I knew they were talking about me. I didn't dare tell them how I felt about it. I was twelve years old, being told I was evil and unredeemable. Even Steven, who forgives and loves everyone, seems to agree that she was a bad person. This from the fandom that thinks it's so accepting of people.

Rose is fine as a character, but my problem was the way Rebecca set up rose pretty much expecting steven to be able to enter lion's fur and find the vhs tape, which means she knew he would have some form of abilities. There weren't any useful tips or videos on the potential chance his powers being affected by his emotions from any stage in his life (could of been infancy, child, or grown adult) and the chance of steven hurting himself or his friends, or family could of happened. Rebecca should of had rose try and learn the human psychology. And leaving a child who has no idea how to control diamond like abilities wasn't exactly helpful for Steven's psychological development.

The thing about Rose is that despite what Rebecca wants to make us think about her, there was never any ill will behind the majority of her mistakes, with the only trully ill thing she's done with ill intent being bubbling Bismuth. Her leaving Spinel behind was cruel, but she couldn't have known that Spinel would just stand there when she hasn't received a diamond order to do so. Pink was raised by tyrants who abused her and treated her as a lesser being while forcing her to make others see her as a god. She was childlish becouse thats what she was treated like from the moment she came to life. She wanted to break the mould and do some good, she learned to use her power in the opposite way of intended- something the other diamonds took thousands more years to even try. She wanted to do good so she defied her family and fought for freedom. She wanted others to be themselves but she didn't want to trully hurt anyone, including her opressors. She enabled others to be who they were- but they did it for her. They were who they wanted to be for her, not for themselves. It wasn't untill after she was gone that they started to live their lives for themselves. Rose made a lot of mistakes, but that doesn't make her a monster, it makes her flawed. And that makes her humane. If we saw her development in the chronological order instead kf watching it backwards, the reception of her character would definetelly be different. People try to make her out to be some sort of monster, but im reality she was a person with a good heart who made mistakes. That doesn't excuse the bad things she's done, obviously, but it doesn't mean she's evil either

Regarding Spinel, the galaxy warp was destroyed at the end of the war, preventing anyone from warping off-planet. So, for over 5,000 years, Rose literally couldn't go back for Spinel. I think she planned to get her after the war because Spinel treats everything like a game and would have been a liability, but that plan was abandoned after the corruption blast and the destruction of any way off-planet. Rose Quartz did not abandon her friends because her son was going to die. When she was separated from her son, he became seriously ill and was literally going to die. Everything became a priority when her son was sick, and she had to merge with him so that he would live. It feels like many fans project their own issues with absentee parents and people onto Rose Quartz. However, that scenario does not apply to Rose Quartz in any way because she literally died to save her son's life. She had an obligation to her son and loved him. Parents automatically start feeling love for their baby before birth due to the brain producing oxytocin, the love hormone. The child also produces oxytocin for the mother in return. Her son was her only offspring, and by that time, she would have deeply loved him. Of course, she wouldn't want her son to die. She didn't die completely but merged with him. I also believe that when he talks to his mom, he is actually speaking to her because they are merged, so she is still there psychologically. She just can't directly speak to the rest of her friends. She had to do this to save her son.

I never knew the fandom hated Rose so much until recently. It continues to blow my mind when a show about the consequences of putting people on pedastools and in boxes births so many people did exactly that. But rose in the box of "bad person" and in the pedastool of "she should've done it differently" when she COULDNT have done it difterently

I loved this video, I always thought Pink was not the monster that the fandom said she was and this video points exactly that. She suffered so much and is so good to see someone recognizing that and recognizing how good of a gem she was.

I'm glad you talked about this, but maybe it can be revisited now that the series has fully ended and we know more about Pink and her time before gaining Earth? Sadly, we know because of it that Volleyball's injury was from one of Pink's tantrums, but it also heavily displayed just how much she had changed by having her interact with Pearl, who knew the Pink that loved Earth, and started the whole rebellion and kept secrets to protect others

I think Rose was a bit of A and a bit of B. Rose was a great person who cared about people and led a rebellion. Rose was also immature and aloof. She got bored with Spinel and left her. She never did anything out of malice, it was just her immaturity that caused her to not realize that some of her actions were hurting others. Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory would be another example of someone like this. Sheldon is not a bad person, but boy does he not get how his actions affect others.

Ugh finally! 4 years late but still! A video that’s not bashing rose/pink ❤ At some point I just started disliking Rebecca and her weird obsession to make everyone hate rose

Louder to the people in the back!! I just hate how quick ppl jump to "Pink is bad!" conclusion after seeing the whole show, like, have we seen the same show or...? Pink is such a complex character, I don't understand how anyone could hate her THIS much

Agreed it was so paramount to make sure the diamonds didn’t know she was actually pink diamond instead of rose quartz

idky this is only getting recommended to me 3 yrs later and wish I had seen it when it came out because I always felt this way. I'm not gonna lie I was actually genuinely shocked when I first started hearing all the rose/pink hate. In the simplest words I always thought, "She always tried her best, and even if it wasn't the greatest, she always tried her best in spite of where she came from".

THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THE “Steven abandonment” ALLEGATIONS AT THE EBD IF THE VIDEO. Whenever anyone makes that argument, I’ve always said that Rose had every right to assume that Steven would be able to live a fairly normal life. It’s stated that the gems had no knowledge of the forced fusion experiments or the cluster before season 2, which was the entire reason that Yellow Diamond was interested in the earth to begin with. I feel like after 6000 years of no Diamond intervention, you’d think you’d be in the clear.

Imo, Pink was an abused child thrown into a world she didn’t understand with no guidance nor support whatsoever. It’s like telling a baby to write a doctorate thesis. So while she made mistakes, I believe she didn’t know any better, seeing as the other diamonds actively abused her most of her existence.

I’m crying? Bless your frickn’ soul!!! Thank you for this take on Rose! (While I do find the Diamonds entertaining as characters and love that they have mostly changed and have tried to change their world because of Steven, I absolutely don’t condone their past actions, especially towards Pink, and I think more people need to take Pink’s abusive/powerless situation into account before they decide to solely blame her for the outcome of many complex issues.)
