Mr. Appleton, I've watched your complete series and of all the boillers, engines, and pumps that I've seen you rebuild, this one is the most unique. I can't wait to see it reconditioned and working. Thank you elevating my curiosity of this Hobby.

I know you don't like that color but in my opinion, I would keep it grey. Has a nice industrial look and seems to be painted rather well.

Wanted to add comment on a holder for turning threaded items, such as the brass connector you turned down. I saw this on another Y-Tube video and made up a set for myself. Each holder was about 1" long and made from various sizes of brass ODs drilled and tapped through with threads I selected, then each OD turned down to about 1/4". Cut 3 slots 120 degrees from one end through the threads to about 75% of the length (1" or whatever was picked). The brass connector you used could then be threaded into a holder and once in the 3 jaw lathe chuck under compression it is held rather tight without damaging the threads.

Beautiful little feed pump Keith! I had an idea for your consideration in regards to mounting the pump to the 504 boiler plant. In my opinion the steam pump would be a far better combination with the Economizer than the hand pump would, and my reasoning for this is because the pump's speed can be adjusted to maintain the water level in the boiler while the Engine is running, instead of the injector filling the boiler rapidly and making the steam drop. Also, considering the Pump's exhaust could be run through the economizer as well through the blank port with the checkball behind the union nut, I believe the preheat the water would be getting from both the Engine's exhaust and the Pump's exhaust would be enough to offset cooling down the boiler if it is fed slowly and steadily. So with the pump dialed in to a nice tickover to keep the water where it needs to be, the burner set to maintain steam and the engine running at a consistent RPM, the plant should be able to produce a nice consistent power output while not needing as much babysitting or fiddling from the engineer aside from oiling. Then the Injector and Hand Pump would be back-up feed systems. Just the thoughts of a Daft Yank ;-)))

Maybe, but I think the 504 generator plant has enough gadgetry on it. I will build another plant to utilise the Stuart Steam pump.

Keith Appleton James May said he had a friend that makes model steam boilers. I assumed since both of you are classical musicians and British it was you. Hopefully I didn't make an ass of myself.
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
Close ..... only thing is that I don't make boilers, I have rebuilt a few . . . . I wonder who his friend who makes boilers is?
@curtisburnett63846 жыл бұрын
I wonder. Don't really think that many people do that in such a small country. I apologise for my assumptions. Have a good day sir.

Likely someone has said this before, but you might find "gunwash" works just as well as expensive thinners for what you want it for.

Keith,someday when it is conveinent for you ,could you show us what is going on inside the smoke box of your old Black 5 locomotive?IT sounds like a real locomotive and it is loud.So many engines are very quiet or sound like a broken air hose Thank you for listening and I will find it helpful.P.N.
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
That's difficult to do with the black 5 as I sold it in 1994, but I am starting to work on model steam locomotives commercially so I will explain the principle. It's simple enough but you need to know about the pipe arrangements.
@modelsteamers6716 жыл бұрын
Nice find Keith. I'm thinking of getting something similar, I did consider making one from a Stuart kit but have heard they are very difficult to build and get working properly. Southworth pumps do sell casting kits but I guess they are difficult to build as well :-(
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
They are all fiddly to build but the 6 inch Southworth is a simpler design.
@modelsteamers6716 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I did look into the 3" Southworth but I was told it is a pain to make and I think for my 5" dia boiler I'd need the 6" pump.

I have a few of these pumps. Took me a week to build. I found out that the prints are wrong. Had to machine some of the parts again. Then, it still hasn't quite worked like this.

What about your coal fired kingdon (I think I spelled that right) boiler? It's far to pretty to not have a home! I've always hoped you might do a horizontal build with a paddlewheeler arrangement, even if it just the drive gear!
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
I considered it, but I think that the "Kingdon" boiler is a bit too small . . . . a 4 or 5 inch maximum diameter boiler would be the best size for this little pump. Having said that though I will sit the parts close to each other and see what the setup looks like {:-)))

Good as always, Keith. While the pump is interesting enough, I'm more curious about that 14xx we saw on the bench... a new thrilling video series?

There will be a few nice surprises coming very soon. But the 14XX belongs to a customer and is not a video project.

Excellent review Keith. I have a question Sir.. Do you know of other manufacturers producing casting kits for steam engines other than Stuart Models? I have done my required google search and turned up no other results, unless I am using the wrong search phrases... I was trying to find out where I could source other casting kits, just to see what variety of engines there may be out there for us hobbyists.. Thanks John

Sweet pump! I'm curious about the piston valve and its timing. ps: you forgot to tell people not to drink Cellulose Thinner. :-)
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
It's not a piston valve, the pump uses two slide valves but one is driven by the shuttle piston.
@jamyers19716 жыл бұрын
OK, now you have to take it apart and show how it works ;^) btw, I googled "Weir pumps", and the best thing I could find was an ebook showing a vertical model with what looked like a single slide valve, but no diagrams or explanations.

This is an early all gunmetal pump. I have 2 new old stock kits and 2 brand new kits. I want to get one to work correctly. Very fiddly.

What is your obsession to paint everything Green? Is that the colour of the local asylums walls? I think it looks fine in Gray. I wish you had opened it up so we could have seen the valves.
