Jake Lah is the founder of DAC and probably the single most influential person in backpacking tent design in the last 30 years. His innovations include the now almost universal pole hub first used by MSR in the Hubba Hubba, non-slipping fly clips that enable the fly tension to contribute to structural strength, and improving on the Copper Spur for the first time in 5 years by reducing it to a single hub design. Not only does his company provide the poles for most backpacking tent brands, but somewhat unusually he actually actively designs the structure of tents for dozens of his customers. Being credited for his input - such as with the S2S tents and the latest Copper Spur tents - is a recent development, but many of the most iconic tent innovations actually belong to him, not the brand that released them. Ironically he doesn't like camping or sleeping on the ground.

Bought the Alto TR2 last year and love it, but is has one quirk: If there is condensation on the inside of the fly (here in middle europe you can get some even with ventilation fully open, ventilation can only prevent it to a certain point no matter how good the tent ist) some walls going to touch the inner mesh no matter how tight or loose i setup the tent. The most problematic wall for this matter is the small one the feets are directing to. Since thats also the part of the tent which you setup a little bit lower if the ground is not perfectly flat you are likely to slide a little bit over night in this direction. That makes your foot end of the sleeping bag touch the inner mesh, which pushes it a little bit outside and touch the inner fly with condensation on it. So i sometimes get a few drops on my sleeping bag. My solution as bikepacker is to storage my small fork packs between the mesh and the fly, then the both never touch even when i push a little bit from the inside. With heavy rain in my case the fly also sometimes touches the mesh on the long diagonal between foot end and the outer end of the cross pole but it's mostly preventable by seting the tent up really tight (personally i don't like to put maximum tension on any tent, so thats maybe the reason i get this problem in the first hand). What i absolutelly love about this tent is the possibily to open your tent up by rolling up every single (!) part of the fly in a ton of possible ways. You can sleep only with the inner mesh to protect you from bugs and enjoy fresh air and the view but still roll down the fly within 1-2 minutes in case rain in coming. You can also open only one side in case you have other people on the other side and want some privacy while sleeping ...

Good point, Im from the PNW. Pretty similar conditions as most of europe. The air stays moist so condensation is almost always an issue in the morning specially.

I have the telos tr2 I love it can't say enough about the tent the build quality durability ventilation huge inside and I have a low setting chair I use in it on rainy days. I absolutely love this tent if your smart with pack and sleep system you can keep your base weight at 10 lbs.

This should be advertised as a 1.5p tent I wish more manufacturers would get onboard with the 1.5p idea. Some of us want it to be easier to find a 1 person tent with room inside to store gear while keeping some of the weight savings over going a full 2p tent.

A 2 person tent should be a 1.5 BFA tent (Big Fat American). Thought 38" at the foot won't fit an adult and a child for that matter.

Ozark Trail 1 person backpacking tent 3.2lbs with front vestibule and only cost $30. I've had it for 7 years. Beats any high end tent you feature on your channel. Lightweight, withstands 30mph winds and doesn't break the bank. Rather use that money on something better like boots or backpack. You don't need to break the bank to get the good stuff if you know where to look

Meh to each their own. Yea it's cheap and similar weight but it's not similar space. I'm 6'5" and 220lbs. I tried single person tents and it's just way too cramped for me to enjoy myself. I had a kelty single person that was sturdy and cheap. It was a great tent but I barely fit. So I got a Nemo hornet elite. Way lighter and way bigger, and way more expensive. Still didn't do it for me. Now I run a gossamer gear 'the two' trekking pole tent. Under 2 lbs and a freaking palace for one person. And at $375 it's way more than the Ozark but still way less than the tents in this video. Light reasonably priced and spacious... I'll take that all day over the single person coffin tent regardless of price.

Thanks for the review! I've been very happy with the Alto I purchased last Summer. I didn't realize the plastic insert for the light bar was supposed to be there though! I threw mine away thinking it was just part of the packaging ☹️

Nice review. I’ll be sticking with my free standing 3 lbs. SlingFin Portal at that price point. The portal has a top bar , 2 poles and nearly vertical walls and better storage options. Get 1 and review it.

Personally since I don't care about going ultralight, I never actually follow person guidelines for tents. The minimum I'll put two people in is a 3 person, and only if it's a significant other. Otherwise I carry a 2 person for myself, and I'm sleeping alone.

When it comes to your HOUSE basically what it is.... Treat it alittle better than your sleeping. Its literally your shelter. You can sleep outside on the ground with an appropriate shelter, sleeping comfortably outside on the ground, without a shelter in ANY conditions is stressful. Elements, Animals, Insects, People.... To be at 4lbs or less for any shelter is amazing. These ultralight guys need to man up haha.

The "architect's" name is most likely the person who designed the poles and how they fit the tent. That's the case with my ba tent which also has a random architect's name on it

Just ordered double rainbow double wall tarptent. But I saw a review on this sea to summit tent that said due to the top of the tent, water pools ontop as well as condensation and the tent gets wet inside. You should do a rain test and then get that double rainbow double wall tarptent for a review

Those dimensions make me say that is almost a 1.5 person if you use a wide sleeping pad. When they both came in, it looked “cozy”, aka tight.

The Hubba Hubba NX (2 person) is huge inside, so the 3 must be HUGE. It's a great tent, easy up and down, tough as hell, and the zippers work great, and little to no condensation, and I really like mine.

I love this video. Because this is a tent I can buy in the EU. I wish you would do more EU brands, because some of the gear you recommend I would have to pay to import it. They are not very nice about importing as the US is. Anything over 30 bucks, including the price of shipping, I have to pay 25% tax on plus a service fee of 20 dollars.

Hi, Dan... Great review. One detail... The "brow pole" is unusual but not unique... The MSR Hubba Hubba uses the same idea. Also, it seems the Hubba Hubba is as much a competitor to the Alto as the Copper Spur, and would be useful to mention. Keep it up and look us up in the Sea To Sky in British Columbia!

The brow pole on this one is flipped upwards like a “V” unlike the hubba hubba which has a more standard slopping roof. This unique design affords more headroom and lateral space with straight sidewalls. Similar but not the same

Too bad the Nemo tensor doesn’t come in a 25” wide mummy style, it really restricts what 2p tents you can use. SMD lunar duo, LHG duo, xmid2, TT stratospire 2, TT double rainbow, Paria arches 2 and bryce 2. I might be missing some but a lot of great UL tents aren’t wide enough like big Agnes, gross man gear the two. Zpacks makes some tents wide enough but really expensive DCF.

Looking at this, there’s a big issue. I would really like to see those two mummy sleep pads in that tent. I saw your feet together and I don’t think there is room for even two mummy sleep pads down there. Me and the Mrs have the Thermarest Xtherm, she regular, me large. I really dig this tent but I really don’t think we can both fit in it. Am I wrong? Is this a tent for two small people who share a pad? Or is it really a one man tent?

Tent looks nice. I'm pretty happy with my copper spur hv ul 2. The floor on this is several inches shorter and that's just no bueno when you're 6'5" lol. However no one seems to have commented on the specs. You say it's sub 3lbs but the specs listed in the vid say 2lb 16oz... Isn't 16 oz a lb? So isn't that 3lbs? Lol not that it's a big deal but I'm just sayin lol.

Hey you might want to look at the new Big Agnes tent that’s coming out. It’s a long version of the copper spur! Might work better for you. And yup… Not sure why they messed up on those specs but that’s a screenshot direct from the website!

@@DanBecker I meant the sea to summit is several inches shorter than the copper spur and that's too short. My copper spur is actually a pretty good size. I love that tent. But if they are going to make a longer one that's even better, so I might check that out. I also have a 2019 GG the two. The new models are shorter by a few inches for some reason. But I love that tent as well. Might swap it for the new Zpacks DupleXL. Lighter and bigger. To have basically both of the same tents I already have and love but bigger would be amazing... 👌

DAN! HELP! I'm losing my freaking mind. I've been debating between a Copper Spur, Dagger Osmos, and now I'm kinda considering spending more on this or the Telos.....aaaaand NOW, the freaking Durston X-Mid is a contender. My wife is probably going to brutally stab me if I don't make a decision and stop watching KZbin reviews, literally day and night. Friends hate the Dagger for the lack of fly coverage. I like the symetrical floor, for sleeping with the wife. Others say the Copper Spur is less durable material. I can score either one right now for about $375. The Durston looks super appealing.....only caveat being availability and awkward head space on certain sides. Then there's Sea to Summit. I'm told they're more durable than all the above....but holy cow expensive, and they're heavier. HELP!

Is there a wind-speed rating for this tent? Also, do any manufacturers specify which part should face the wind? There are several places in the US, below 4000', where 30kt + winds occur, and not having to worry about a lightweight tent coming apart in high winds seems a desirable thing.

It's nice kit, but I find that almost everything that Sea To Summit makes is extremely overpriced. Even factoring in the "You-Get-What-You-Pay-For" mentality, their prices are unnecessarily high for equipment that, in any given category, functions only incrementally better than Walmart.

Just go up to a 3 person sized tent and split the weight between two people. You can still easily get something much more room where each of you are carry around 2 pounds.
