To think that the Romans built the dirt ramp to get to the remaining Jewish rebels still amazes me, especially with the fact that it’s still there. It makes me wonder what the Masada plateau looked like when the Romans first pulled up to the site to lay siege to it. Fun fact: According to tradition, the reason why we know exactly what happened to the rebels was because Josephus was able to place himself at the spot in the circle such that he’d be the last one to survive (the Jews had arranged themselves in a circle and said that they’d kill the person on their left until there was one person left) Side note: The siege took place in 72 AD/CE
@guykeren59722 жыл бұрын
Hi John! The story of the group suicide is actually mentioned in Josephus' book "the Jewish War". It took place in Yodfat during the Roman siege of the town in 67 A.D. At the time, Josephus (then called 'Yosef Ben Matityahu') was the commander of the jewish rebels in the Galilee. After the siege of Yodfat tragically ended, Josephus turned himself in to the Romans, and witnessed the rest of the war as some sort of advisor to the Romans While accompanying their army in the holy land. In 72 A.D. Josephus was probably out of israel, maybe already in Rome where he would write his books during the late 70's and 80's. The information about the siege of Massada was gathered most probably from the reports of Roman commanders, and from his own acquaintance with the Roman techniques and the mount itself. In Rome he was named 'Titus Flavius Iosephus' after his patron, who gave him Roman citizenship (and freedom to write). And now a fun fact for you John: One of the main reasons his books were reserved and copied for 2000 years is because he mentions John the Baptist and Jesus. Side note: About the same time in Rome, when Josephus wrote his books, other exiled jews wrote famous books as well, the Evangelists for example.

Congratulations for hiking the trail up to Masada! I was there with an organized tour, so no hike for me. The Dead Sea is a very special experience, but you don't usually stay for too long (apart if you're doing mud packages). Lag Ba'omer is the 33th day in the counting of the omer (between Passover and Shavuot) and it's the first day after Passover where celebrations are allowed. Actually our Jewish wedding anniversary is Lag Ba'omer.

We started the Masada hike in the pitch black and the ticket office wasn't even close to opening yet (didn't have to buy a ticket). We wanted to be on the top before it started getting light. We had hiked up during the previous day so knew the path. The sunrise from the top is like a religious experience. You can still see the remains of the ramp the Romans built to get their siege towers up to the walls. You can also camp nearby at Ein Gedi beach for free and have a BBQ with the locals. Ein Gedi is also great for hiking and has springs and waterfalls and the chance to see the amazing Nubian Ibex.

Reading some of the posts I realize, sadly, that some people never leave the place they were born.😞. I am almost 70….in my lifetime so far, I have lived for 3-4years in 3 foreign countries and traveled extensively in 10 others. I have lived in 6 different states in the U.S. and have traveled to…and visited….all the major highlights of every state in the U.S. except Puerto Rico and Alaska. (They are on my bucket list😂) my wish for everyone…is that they do everything in their power to travel, go to other countries, Lear a different language, eat their foods, get to know as many of the local people as you can. They are beautiful and love their children and want world peace just like everyone else. I think the more people travel and learn to love and respect all our differences…..we would have less war and violence against each other.

Come on girls. Do the mimimum research before talking about Massada. It was a fortress / palace build by Herod the great who was a tyrant and a puppet to the Romans. Jews were not slaves during that time. Some of them revolted against the Roman occupation and found refuge at Massada. It took the mighty Roman army almost 2 years to defeat 1,000 Jews including women and children. Many committed suicide rather than surrender. This is a very special place. Special units of the IDF have swearing ceremonies there.

The story of Masada is fact, not some random version of fact. Not just according to Josephus (one of the most important and credible reporters of the time), but confirmed by massive amounts of archeological artifacts and other contemporary sources. Masada is held in high regards by Israelis, as it represents the extent Jews of old have gone to be free, and also demonstrates the length their oppressors went to torment them. It seems all the rage today to suppress or invalidate fact, if it embarrasses you, or doesn’t support what you wish was history. I cant tell if you feel the need to hide/bury/ feel shamed or threatened by the fact that the Jews had a Temple in Jerusalem 2000 years ago, or if you are just ignorant. Either way, Israel is so much more than just a party town. It is the an ancestral and spiritual home of the Jews. I wish your videos would mention that, at least in passing.
@yonishafir60252 жыл бұрын
Either it was from pure ignorance or even worse, just plain neutrality to not "rock the political boat", this was horrible on so many levels. It's like celebrating the USA without mentioning slavery, almost annihilation the native Indians and concurring a big part of Mexico, but hi "Land of the free"
@julianmallach3482 жыл бұрын
LOL, you know what one of the worst things about living in Israel is? That people here are so precious about anything and everything all the time. Pathetically ridiculous. They are doing travel videos, they do not need to cover the history of Israel and/or the Jews just to make you or anyone else feel good. You want to tell the story of Masada? Make your own KZbin video and upload. And another thing, in Israel, people don't even agree on what happened last week, since every person has their own subjective take on things, so when it comes to things that happened a few thousand years ago, its a bit funny how people are willing to take things as carved in stone based on certain historical sources, which if you think about for a moment, were also people giving their subjective take on things. In short, take a chill pill.
