A Swedish Football Culture!

Join me on a typical football-filled Saturday in Gothenburg, Sweden. The day starts bright and early with a friendly game at the Eriksberg ground at 7:30 am. Despite the chilly 10-degree weather, the spirit of the game warms us up and it’s a fantastic way to kickstart the day.
Football is more than just a game in Sweden; it’s a part of our culture. With over 240,000 licensed players and around 3,200 active clubs fielding over 8,500 teams1, football is undoubtedly the most popular sport in the country1. The sport first made its appearance in Sweden in the 1870s1, and since then, it has evolved tremendously. Swedish players have made their mark on the world stage as well. Players like Zlatan Ibrahimović, who is Sweden’s all-time top goalscorer2, and others have represented Sweden in various international tournaments2.
In the evening, I take my kid to their first football match at Bravida Arena to watch BK Häcken vs Varberg. BK Häcken is one of the top teams in Allsvenskan, the highest Swedish level1. The match against Varberg was an exciting one with Häcken securing a 2-0 victory. The atmosphere was electric, and it was a great introduction to the world of football for my kid.
