How beautiful!! I would love to know how you prepared/installed the gravel areas... I have shell rock around the raised beds in my potager. We cleared and levelled the ground, put down some sand, covered all the paths with weed mat that goes underneath the raised beds and is stapled to the inside of them. We then put down a couple of inches of shell rock and compacted it with a mechanical compactor. Within months, we had to start pulling out the weeds that were growing up through the weed mat, and the few that had grown from weed seed blowing into the garden. Now that we're in the middle of summer, weeding the shell rock is a significant task that needs to be redone every week! I can't help but wonder what gardeners have done differently for generations on expansive gravel driveways and courtyards that always look pristine...

Thank you so much! Actually we still have the base layer as a top layer here...so it's a deep layer of macadam that has been compacted properly. And in the bottom there's a thick weed surpressing mat. But I need to confess that we also get weeds from seeds landing in the gravel. But it's only a problem where the gravel layer is a bit too thin. So maybe that's the issue?

@@cavallinsvardagdeluxe5297 Thanks for taking the time to share your process! I think you're right - the gravel/shell rock layer is probably not deep enough...and perhaps the weed mat we used was poor quality or too thin. We may have to redo it at some point - but definitely good advice to keep in mind for any other areas we decide to convert to gravel :)
