He was too indecisive and stubborn at the same time especially compared to his predecessor Jaehaerys. + He kept and then reinstated Otto despite his ambition, in comparison Jaehaerys never shied away from dismissing Hands that did not serve his interest. + He then insisted on Rhaenyra being heir instead of leaving it up to a vote, Jaehaerys set aside his own personal feelings (he favoured Rhaenys) and instead let the realm vote; which ensured that no one could challenge the succession. + He did not take any active part in running his family, leaving Alicent to fester resentment in his sons and allowing Rhaenyra to ruin her image with her philandering. Jaeharys made sure his children loved each other and for the ones that proved to wild to control, he took them to task even if it cost him his happiness. Viserys is a good man, but a terrible terrible king. Not Mad King or Joffrey terrible but certainly Robert Baratheon terrible.

She hadn't been getting that from Rhaenyra until now, clearly. That combined with disowning Aegon as her son, helped her to come around and see Rhaenyra would be the better choice after all. She feels extreme bitterness resentment and hurt, made worse by her shitty marriage. But it was never really hate. or else the scenes in this episode with Rhaenyra can't happen. She is a complex tragic villain

Viscerys had truly diverted the war. Alicent had acknowledged that Aegon wasn’t fit and even accepted that Rhaenyra would be queen. This war will come down to a prank played years ago involving a pig. No pig prank equals no toast from Aemond which equals Rhaenyra would have had no reason to leave and would have still been there when Viscerys died and could have explained the prophecy to Alicent. Instead she’s not there giving Otto time to undo everything Viscerys wanted so badly.

An amazing episode, truly tragic, especially the miscommunication between Allicent and King Viserys on his deathbed at the end, about Aegon's prophecy and the prince who was promised, it was meant for Rhae, not her. The first of many tragedies. The dance of dragons has officially begun... I love how they've written this story to be so infuriating at times, because of characters actions & decisions, not because it's written badly, but because it's written so right! Every characters motivation makes sense here, and it's okay not to pick a side, as both sides have likable and relatable qualities to them, both commit evil deeds to further their legacy, and ultimately both Rhaenyra and Alicent are tragic products of their political environment, actually you could say that about the whole damn family! Peak television storytelling. 10/10

Yeah possibly. They've really tried to humanize Alicent in the show. And by establishing their friendship, surely Rhaenyra's death would affect her in some way. Book Alicent was much more ruthless and calculating. And they were never friends at all, so Rhaenyra's death wouldn't have mattered to her. Her regret possibly comes from acknowledging that she destroyed her own house and basically killed her own children by dragging them into her conflict with Rhaenyra.

all of this “sons are preferable in medieval times” theme are still very relevant to this episode. even Corlys prefer driftmark to be inherited to Lucerys who is clearly not his own blood rather than Baela/Rhaena who are his actual true blood, just because they are female granchildrens from Laena who is also a woman. i think Rhaenys has been missjudged Corlys all this time, sure he said he always says that rhaenys deserved the throne and everything, but his actions speaks otherwise. at the end is all about his own pursuit.

You have to take into account that if Rhaenys had been queen, then Corlys would be her prince consort. It's possible that Corlys ambition wanted to have the highest seat possible, and married to the queen would have given him such. He wanted Rhaenys as queen because it would elevate his own status, not because he favors female inheritance. Corlys starts off selfish and blinded by ambition, but he apologizes to Rhaenys eventually.

Imagine if they were still as close as in the beginning as adults. The House would've been unstoppable by the time of GoT due to its stability. Jon and Daenerys would've probably exist, but with different appearances and circumstances. Rhaenyra would've been Queen for 20 years, before giving the throne to her eldest son, Jacaerys. Who would've married Helaena. Eventually Aegon and Viserys would've make it as Kings. To congratulate Alicent on her life devotion and sacrifices, Rhaenyra would've offer her to go in Essos together. To retire together peacefully and as besties. (Alicent would've need this as a reward after spending too much time in King's Landing) Daemon wouldn't mind being left alone as he would've been Hand of the king for Rhaenyra and multiple Kings before he passes away. And as for Aegon (Alicent's) and Aemond, they would've serve in the council. With one of them probably marrying one of Daemon's daughters. Since Alicent wouldn't be bitter in this alternate scenario, Aemond and Aegon would've been faithful to Jacaerys and Lucerys. Probably even best friends too, to follow their mothers example.

So if Rhaenyra decided to name Jacaerys as her heir, despite many whispers, most would still be on board. Especially if Daemon is around. Not to mention, Alicent would not be as cold in this version, since her and Rhaenyra would've made their peace. Which means that the green faction, would mostly be on the Blacks' side. Perhaps Aemond and Criston would still be angry, but they would never go against the crown. Especially with that many support in Jacaerys' side. I'm pretty sure Alicent and Rhaneyra are the key which opened the Dance.

Alicent is, to me, one of those characters that I love to hate and hate to love, I have mixed feelings about her, since I see she's just her father's puppet, she's so innocent that has believed everything he said Rhaenyra would do to her and her children, which I highly doubt, Rhae was the rightful heir, but she doesn't have the heart to kill her siblings just because of the throne.... Aemond is a whole other story, I know this is basically over a century before the events of Game of Thrones but I just get the feeling that he's going to be far worse than Ramsay, which I once considered the most vicious, and evil character on the show

It was also seen when they were young. Young Alicent was the one who approached Rhaenyra first who was reading under the Weirwood tree. Rhaenyra always distants herself (which is understandable.) These two are tragic characters :(

SPOILERS FROM FIRE AND BLOOD: I think the way the dance will end in the show will have Alicent be the one who poisons Aegon for what he will do to Rhaenyra. In the book it is left ambiguous as to who is responsible but I think the show will have it be Alicent as her final act before succumbing to the winter fever.

She had possessiveness and control issues because she was a pawn and it was the only way she could exert power. If she hit rock bottom, already lost her other children and grandchildren. As well as the guilt from her past friendship with Rhaenyra who was her only true companion that cared for her genuine wellbeing before her marriage to King Viserys. I think it would actually be pretty realistic that her last act would be to end everything by poisoning her child as a last farewell before succumbing to the fever. Also the fever would’ve heightened any intense emotions and made her a bit crazy. Parents in her position have murdered their own children for less. It’s not like they were born out of love and willingness.

If Jacaerys married Haelena, the situation would've been resolved. House Hightower and House Velayron can equally have influence over Jacaerys and Haelena's children in the future so it shouldn't be a problem. I can be very confused since mostly ambition is driven by people who want to change the system to suit their goals. Now if I were an advisor for Rhaenyra, I would advise letting Aegon take the throne. She should have played the long game instead of trying to quicken her ascent like Aegon the Uncrowned had done before against Maegor and long after her when Viserys the Beggar King tried against Robert Baratheon and ultimately came up short. What she should've done is wait as Jaehaerys did, Aegon the Elder would ruin his own reign and suffer slight upon slight towards his people and Rhaenyra could use the ensuing chaos to garner support against her brother. Feign defeat and try to win through the shadows than what occurred.

The problem here is that Aegon may be a twat but he is no Maegor the Cruel. His rule would probably resemble that of Robert Baratheon a lot. He would drink and whore and let his hand and council rule the realm. He wouldn't be a popular king but also not so bad that the people would rise up against him. Challenging Aegon directly after his coronation was the only way to garner any support. If she had allowed him to rule, the longer he reigns the more legitimate his rule becomes in the eyes of the realm. Then again if she had just allowed him to rule she wouldn't have lost three of her sons and her own life. Her son may have ended up on the throne eventually, but the question is, was it worth it?
