Is it really “green” and “environmentally smart” to use clearcutting methods, like the forestry industry say? Or is it an outdated, inefficient and heavily carbon-emitting practice that does not belong in a world already struggling with forest fires and a climate crisis?
How would our relation to the forest change if we converted to selective logging instead?
”A Tale from the Woods” presents: Maria “Vildhjärta” Westerberg (artist, poet), Rebecka Le Moine (biologist/politician), Anders Lindroth (researcher at Lund University), Mikael Karlsson (eco forestry spokesperson), Andris Fågelviskare (tracker, nature guide) and Ben Bushill (carpenter, poet).
Directed and produced by Mattias Olsson for Campfire Stories. Musical score composed by Mischa Grind. Audio design by Jonas Källstrand. Audio mix by Boris Laible. Co-producer: John Nyberg.

I ve voluntarily lived "homeless" amongst the trees for over half my life, no human contact, no tech, watching life come from death, hearing the voices of the trees, the wisdom. Nature saved my ass during a traumatic childhood which ails me still at near 60 but always, always, my healing is nature. I work with nature, a woodsman I ve been all my life, but a woodsman that doesn t believe I have the answers, instead I listen to the creaks of the trees in a storm, or notice the struggles in the droughts..its a language few understand now. I see one person from day to day, but friendship is found not with my own kind, but with nature, I m never alone. Nature gave me dance and through dance, wilderness dance, comes a connection few know and yet if they did, they would not need their fancy material things. Thank you for this beautiful film and the beauty of those involved...so wonderfully poetic and visual...just BEAUTIFUL🥰

Beautifully said. I would love to be “homeless” in the woods. I am stuck in the rat race of life here in the US. I have always felt at “ home” in nature, it’s my happy place and spend as much time in the woods as I can. However I would love to live on a big piece of land with a little cabin, that’s all I ever wanted. One day I will throw it all away and retreat to my home in the woods

I wandered in here, not only looking for a film about forests, but one that is true. And I found it. Every bit is deeply beautiful. It'll keep me going and connected for a long time, it'll help me do my bit; the city is making me stunted. Thank you very much, Mattias, for this film. My very best to you and your team members. Never stop. 🌲

Thank you for this very sensitive documentary of a great "mixture" of perspectives and personalities... My takeaway is that scientists are studying the obvious... nature is natural and artificial is created by humans... destroying for profit and trying to compensate... (for profit) the people who live so close with nature have a deep sense of life and trust in the connection... as we are part of the ecosystem/biodiversity.... 💙💚🌏 beautiful poem... thank you 🤍

I saw this film in my stream and started to watch it. It's very beautiful and touching. I hope I will be dead when the trees have all disappeared, as they will. There are too many ignorant people on this Earth who would understand this film, unfortunately. There are too many humans who put themselves first above all living beings. No, they put money above all else and squash those that think otherwise by using fear of the unknown. I've just subscribed and will try to nurture hope by watching your films. Thank-you. 🙂

I also feel what the animals feel and see them as individuals. I feel a very sad dark deep pain in my heart seeing the world as it is. I live in America and I am vegan. People are cruel and mock me. It’s strange that being compassionate can trigger people so badly. I now hate most humans and want to live in the middle of nowhere but the middle of nowhere is gone.

I LOVE MARIA SO MUCH!! I did the punk thing as a youth....it isnt the answer, just a diversion, when I stopped the substance abuse and rebelling I too got sick. Very sick. I was an animal loving kind kid who got shoved through the sausage making machine too. Now I live on 30 acres on the edge of a forest and my vitality is returning...slowly. Seeing these films reflects my own journey and the absolute truth Maria speaks. Im soo pleased I stumbled across them! Thanks from far away forest in NZ.

I think we have become dominated by greed, and above all the greedy who have been successful in their greed. In other words, the super rich . And unfortunately, most successful politicians are very rich too. So if a film like this can show that natures' way is even more productive, maybe they will let things be done differently, and not be in fear of losing their ''wealth''. I hope so .

Sociopaths and egoists are more likely to want to rule and dominate; hence, (as one person said above) we’re overtaken by greed. What’s happening atm is more than just a ying yang balance of good vs. evil.

What a beautiful film. Thank you. Whenever I see the earth being plowed down to build houses, it just breaks my heart. To see all the waste of paper goods being used and then thrown in the trash with no regard as to where it came from. Destroying the earth and then polluting it with trash. We are one. The earth is in us and we are the earth. Love this film and happy to have found it.

That’s what happened to our Forrest in the Great Smokies in Tennessee. The geoengineering in the sky has changed the weather and micro biome. There’s a place called Mount Mitchell up on the BlueRidge Parkway that I was told as a little girl it was Acid Rain. It looks like and eerie ghost place. This is not “Acid Rain”. It was an experiment because it is in one spot where they experimented dumping their chemicals or this would have happened all over instead of one spot. People are indoctrinated into believing the g o v is on the up and up when they are not. There is massive geoengineering happening world wide as they poison us and the forests! It’s not Co2 emissions. The trees live on our Co2 and in return give us Oxygen. God made it this way.

Im kind of near the clarkville area, and they've been clear cutting all over the place the last 10 years. Trees well over 100 years old, just gone. Its caused flooding and soil compaction, so nothing is growing back in these areas. It gets even worse driving out in the dover area. They've clear cut so much. Im more than a little disappointed in our state.

"I think people who feel depressed or feel it in their bodies, understand how nature around them feels." 💘 Straight to the heart. I am Neurodivergent and have struggled my entire life to fit in the "box" of the 9-5/job/career, success, money driven machine. It has always felt unnatural to me and I have done everything to get away from it as often as possible. Being in nature has always been my medicine so to speak. You couldn't keep me inside when I was a kid, I feel more human in the wilds. Marias cabin in the woods is seriously my dream. Seeing the forests chopped down for money is heartbreaking, in Sweden is shocking to me living in the US. I know its happening everywhere but theres something especially magical about the areas forests. It is depressing, its depressing that more people dont feel like taking the time to figure out ways to live in harmony with the natural world around them. They just take and take with no regard for everything living in their path that they are destroying. I'm thankful to see videos like this and hope it inspires more people to appreciate the beauty around them. We must treasure and take care of it. 🙏❤️

It is difficult to comprehend how one can be so separated from that of which they are naturally a part of. It baffles me. Too few truly question their relationship with the world around them. So many people live toxic, disconnected lives, and only manage to fulfil themselves externally. Only when we stop consuming and competing can we truly question what is important. Unfortunately, life under capitalism is just one big competition.
