Broody Hens are a real pain sometimes, especially for someone who doesn't want any more chickens, like me. We are revisiting another of our cottage gardens outside the Potting Shed.

Oh Jen, we have had several broodies this spring and it amazes me that they survive without eating for so long. We take their eggs but every day they sit on a new batch. I broke down this last time and went to the feed store and bought a few chicks and put them in the nesting box with her (even though we didn’t need any more chickens).She is one happy mama! And the chicks are so very content. Mama is very protective of her babies, the other hens and rooster (Reginald) would not even think about messing with them. So much fun to watch them. Your gardens inspire me and keep me motivated to continue. Shalom from Michigan!

Jerri! Thank you! God's timing is perfect. We just got some sad news, nothing devastating to us, no death or anything, just sad. Anyway, I looked in my list of videos and there you were! I told my husband that this would be perfect to make my heart feel better. You did not disappoint! I loved your chicken tales. I am sorry your population is growing when you didn't want it to. When I had chickens, we made them a coop and a run. I also never had a rooster! I loved going in and sitting in the run with my girls. I miss that, I think, more than anything, since we moved into town. We could have 4 hens in town but our backyard is almost all concrete. It gets so hot back there in the summer and cold in the winter. I just can't do it to them. Anyway, I will continie to live vicariously through your sweet videos. God's best to you sister! You give me joy in a less than perfect world. Some days, I am more ready than others to look up and see our Master coming for us! I am always looking, days like today I wish a little more. Chickens do add a touch of humor and joy to this old world; God certainly gave us a lot to be thankful for with.nature and animals. My first chickens were escapees from the neighbors, so I never planned coops and runs.... they have always been free-range. Every time I got the tribe down to 5 or 6 chickens another group of "runaways" would hop over the fence and join our clan.... oh dear, that is how I came to be a chicken mom.

Those chickens are beautiful Jeri. I wish I could have chickens. My brother who has passed away had them and he use to tell me it was wonderful to always have fresh eggs. I wonder with those beautiful feathers that if you use them in your art work, that is what and if they fall out. 😊 My dahlias are now about 9” tall but after what you told me and some research, I am going to do them all the way in large pots and then it will be easy to bring them inside. I don’t know if they are something that I can bring back to Florida but if they thrive, I will try it down the road plus I’ll have the seeds. You told me but I forgot the name of the stuff to kill the slugs. They were a problem this spring eating the Marigolds …grrrrrrr. I had to put chicken wire around the zinnias this year because the rabbits were eating them, they are about 12” high now. Its has been terribly dry up here and I have to water everything three times a day and even change the birdbath four times a day. It’s fascinating that all creatures great and small come to that birdbath for water because it’s so dry. honey bees, bumblebees, yellow jackets, wasps, hornets …all the types of birds right in front of me not even afraid because they’re so thirsty. So send rain if you can 😊…. Good to see your garden as always. God Bless you both…… Brian

Oh my! You have a regular Bird Peyton Place! Oh the drama! 😂 Your gardens are coming along nicely. I love when you spot an empty area, “I can put annuals in there like zinnias.” That’s my whole landscaping plan in a nutshell! My daughter in law asks how my garden gets so full. I just dig, divide, fill the hole. 😉 My nemesis this year is a flock of neighboring guineas.😤 They have scratched deep indentations (I guess for dust bathing) in my pumpkin patch and lettuce bed. It’s rather comical to watch as I chase them under the fence into the horse pasture, they stand there watching me, saying things about me to one another in a very loud tone, then as I go back to the house they return.🤦🏻♀️ What’s a gardener to do?😵💫 I think a fence is in order. Thank you for the stories about your wonderful farm animals! Do your peacocks ever lay eggs?

Jeri, first let me say that i dearly love you and your channel. I look forward to every single episode and cant wait ti see what you are sharing, and how your gardens may be changing. Your tone of voice and the lovely ambience of your home and property, gives me such a nostalgic, warm, and peaceful feeling. It makes me feel like all is well with the world, because i'ts a respite from all the stress and strife going on. I would be heartbroken if you decided to stop sharing with us. I can tell that you are authentically a wonderful and caring person. Its evidenced by the loving care you give to your animals, your plants, your home...and even the subjects that you cover. It shows in the way that you are so humble about your talents and abilities, as well as by the time you spend creating and sharing it all. As far as your faith is concerned, i doubt that would ever turn someone away. Im not religious myself, and you were not speaking in a preachy way. However, I must admit that my ears pricked up when you specifically mentioned praying for the country, instead of the world. Because of the strong political rhetoric going on now, there is a stronger affiliation of "prayer for the country" with one political party. Since we are hearing so much fear about immigration, socialism-communism, and even education and healthcare...as well as being told to pray and vote a certain way, or we aren't going to have a country anymore, it's possibly construed that youre a MAGA republican. I'm 72, and have been Republican for most of my life, so I'm not coming from a judgmental place. But when you said that, i remember hoping that you weren't. I would never have mentioned it, except that if "I" had any reaction at all, then its possible that others may have felt more strongly. Its sad that such a lovely sentiment can arouse a negative association. I'm constantly confounded that you dont have at a minimum, 300,000 subscribers. Please don't become discouraged, because I've heard others, with more followers, say that an algorithm changed things overnight for them. God bless you❤️
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the encouragement, I'm not frustrated about subscriber count, numbers don't really matter that much. I think the friends here on the channel are of the utmost quality, that's the important thing. There has been a war on Christianity for a long time, regardless of politics. I believe what I said was more along the lines of "pray for our country and wherever you are in the world, pray for your country". As a serious student of history, I vote on policy, not personality. Therefore, I vote R and have done so since my first vote for Reagan, way back when. My beliefs simply do not align with the other party. There was a time when we could discuss politics and religion calmly and respectfully, but, sadly, it seems those days are over.

That Rooster is the most handsome I've seen. I don't have chickens but we have a gazillion (exaggeration time) feral cats (at least 20 and now there's more kittens running about). I lay chicken wire over my flower and veggie beds or they become kitty litter boxes. They think everything is for them. Also have to deal with raccoons, opossums, skunks and I'm not in a rural or country area. I can't grow sunflowers or the raccoons try to climb the stalk and break them. I had a hummingbird feeder hanging near the back fence and every day it was empty. Put out a trail camera and a raccoon climbed the fence, grabbed the pole to bend toward him with one hand and with the other hand, he turned the bottle upside down and slurped up the sugar water as it poured out, so I had to move it.

I can tell by your comment that you love your chickens a lot! The Broody in the sink was quite protective of her eggs, but my big red girl Ruby is as sweet as can be, I handle her chicks with ease.

I LOVE your chicken story !! It would make such a darling children’ s story .”Tink in the Sink and other Broody Tales “. 😊 You inspire me so ! Are the baskets you got at Dollar Tree metal trash cans? It was hard to see what they were originally.

These were short wire baskets from Dollar tree, James found them for me.

Your mud hole is from a crawdad. They will burrow from the water and mound up the edges around the hole.

I am in Upstate N.Y. & it is so hot & humid this morning. I am trying to tie up some of the Hydrangeas the heavy rain took down yesterday. Jeri, I love feverfew & have 3 different kinds in my gardens. Would you like some seeds in the fall? They are easy to pull out if you get more than you want.

Yes I would like some!

You are my heroine ❤! Love the lattice wall I like the addition at the top. BTW, my Walmart is marking down many plants and I picked up 4 coneflowers, 8 Wizard of Ahhhhs PW Veronica's and some corallbells. Everything was $3! Your store might have some also. Do you use a garden app to identify plants? I know you are so well educated about everything green and growing but sometimes we have questions 😅

I could sure use more perennials in my gardens, I'll check out our Wallmart stores.

The previous owner of my house was a gardener. She had Lemon Balm in one area but I didn't recognize it and didn't realize it would seed itself if it wasn't cut down regularly. Arghh ;) I have been able to reclaim some areas by carefully digging it out which is a big job. Did you redo your lattice with pre-made panels and what type of wood? 🌺 You have beautiful chickens and garden!
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow7 ай бұрын
I purchased a tiny Lemonbalm plant from an Herbal show over 10 years ago and it was the biggest garden mistake I ever made. The lattice panels were 4x8 , I had to cut each one to fit and then frame them in with 1x2"s Pressure treated wood.

Sweet chickens😊 Is the lupine you planted perennial or annual? I planted annual; it grew about two inches then just stopped, while everything else around it is growing fine - in several different beds
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow7 ай бұрын
Mine is perennial Lupine. Grows slowly in the first year and takes off like crazy on the 2nd year.

Oh, your chickens are so beautiful, but they cause you a lot of work in your garden!(KH)

They can be very difficult sometimes; every one of them has a stubborn streak.
