A Tale of Two Relays. Fixing my Defenders Headlights

My main beam has stopped working but the flash still works any ideas?

The 'Flash' is on a separate circuit so a strong candidate is the main lighting switch. They are a known weak point. The test light is your friend. Strip the cowl off. You will see the main lighting switch In the off position there will be power on one pole this is the feed As you operate the switch you should see a feed on each wire so one click forward side lights - Next click main / dip feed. Check this first. as depending on the year of your vehicle it could be something else. I've found 2 blown headlight lamps (bulbs to the layman) to a TD5 where the Dim Dip relay had corroded and refused to pass current.

Its nothing to do with Lucas engineering, its LANDROVER who decided they did not need a relay. Do not keep the stupid myth going about Lucas. Thier products are good, I have far more failures with Bosch and Hella products.
