Riga is such an elegant, peaceful and charming city. Latvian food is very good, especially the fish is prepared in a million ways. Latvia and the Baltics really have a lot to offer tourists. Worth a visit. I have been and I am delighted. Be sure to see the Baltic Sea because it is amazing from this perspective. Greetings from Poland.

But despite that latvia doesn't have a long and rich coffee culture there is tea, herbal tea. A lot of it. But these days coffee is available from all those vending machines or narvesen or what not. Especially for Germans visiting Riga and other cities and castles in Latvia and Estonia, is just a must. So much German heritage with Baltic (Livonian) flare. Even Riga was founded by Germans (or Low Old Saxons, to be precise) from Bremen in 1201 and was a majority in the cities up to the 19th century. German Baltic population had to be "repatriated" just in December 1939 from Latvia and Estonia. Lots of people now in Germany have Baltic (Livonian) roots
@duesen00
@duesen00 Жыл бұрын
That is true, except that the Germans there weren't called Livonians. The Livonians are a small ethnicity related to Estonians and Finns in North-Western Latvia, the crusaders just called their state that way. The Germans in the Baltics are usually referred to as Baltic-Germans
@ervinvonhimmel
@ervinvonhimmel Жыл бұрын
@@duesen00 That is true, that a small people, called Livionians (in Latin, in German the land is Lettland - the land of who? :)), gave the name to the country (they lived around then Riga and were the first allies to the newcomers etc), first unofficially, officially the country was called Terra Mariana, or The Land of the Mary. Shortly, they were calling themselves Livonians, as Prussians called themselves Prussians, or Bavarians called themselves Bavarians, Saxons are Saxons etc. (btw, in some languages, like Estonian, German means Saxon until now) For example, painter Albrecht Dürer, in the 15th century, when he was painting women from Livonia, wives of the merchants, he called them Livonians. These are famous drawings of his, you better check them out, to find out who Livonians were ;)

@@ajl3671 Of course, a part of modern-day Lithuania was East Prussia and Memel (Klaipeda) was a large old German city-port until 1945, all Germans were deported, and the local population living there has very little to do with Germans who lived there before. In Latvija, on the contrary, this heavy connection to Baltic Germans is visible everywhere today, starting from modern-day Latvian language, local traditions, cuisine, architecture etc and of course genetically and anthropologically, in people's "faces", more than half of modern Latvians have German surnames, to begin with :)

liepaja looks great, gotta visit again and properly. perhaps only been once in my life there to some beach festival and didnt get to explore the city much. but ive seen videos and the old town of liepaja looks great, yes many houses still need renovation but at least they are still there. the old liepaja train station is still standing, in riga it is no more. but of course very tragic place during the world war 2. absolute horrors. in liepaja just like in riga. i stood in the place where the great riga synagogue once used to stand and it was a heavy place. in ruins with monuments now. it used to be an amazing building in riga. its sadly a place of crime now, crimes that took place in many other parts of latvia at the time and badly affected one way or another so many normal people, just like you and me. times have changed now in europe and riga looks like a great city like elsewhere in europe. so it can be difficult to imagine what kinds of horrors people in riga saw at that time. A lot of the historical maskavas forsete area itself is a tragic place

@@Janis6566 world war 2 stands out due to technology, all the previous wars didnt have the tools for such mass destructions. Even the second deadliest conflict in the human history the first world war was lacking in that. The second world war thus because the deadliest and most destructive conflict in the history of the world. Thats why Jelgava was so much destroyed. And thats why we see it today the way we do. Direct result of war and of course the post war decision by the local authorities to not restore the city in the old style which was common in post war years. I am not even mentioning the massive human tragadies that resulted from it. In latvia and elsewhere.

You forgot that it is illegal to drink in public 😂 And you should have tried the cold beetroot soup with kefir. Very refreshing on a hot day! We eat lots of different soups, one warmer favorite is sorrel soup. And of course bread, our sourdough bread is very aromatic and even has an aftertaste. In the evening you should have some local beer with rye bread fried in garlic butter. Also, I would recommend to see the wooden architecture, especially across the river (the restored Āgenskalns market is also very nice and cozy). Bars, restaurants and cafés all have their own very distinct style, but mostly they are a form of what I would call cozy hipster.

in the meantime it is indeed the "Russians" who have let the Baltic countries become independentthe Russian speakers could have screwed up, and in this case Latvia would remain Soviet because the majority of the population of the main Latvian cities was Russian or other Slavic

@@msmolyansky in the meantime the Soviets have allowed the population to see their standards of living greatly improve, I doubt that the Latvian government between the wars and succeeded in this, moreover if the USSR was such a bad regime how would this Is it that in the early 60s their inhabitants had a standard of living close to that of Westerners while the country was underdeveloped in the early 60s??

To foreigner's Latvia is very cheap. But to natives who live in Latvia is is really pricy. Minimal wage is 500 or slight 500 euros per month.

Well despite of that latvian residents like to drive around in very expensive cars, the streets are full of them. This is not a common sight in poorer countries. In poorer countries streets are also full of scooters or motorcycles, those perhaps are cheaper than cars. Why don't local people in latvia take scooters or moto on the streets?

@@dreamthedream8929There is a huge difference in Latvia between Rich and poor. And in Riga center most people are rich. And the roads are so broken that rifing a scooter is dangerous.

@@elizabethberman4179 roads seem to be okay and even the poor Latvians don't live in slams or tent cities or lay around in parks and streets. Which again is common in countries with poverty problems. And what scooters? You mean the green bolt ones rental? That does not even count. In fact they are dangerous to ride and cause accidents with or without roads being broken. Latvian people don't ride motorcycles, a cheaper means of transport that fill the cities elsewhere. If you see a motorcycle in riga or elsewhere it'd a hobby expensive one, not a common means of transport for average people. This is the different and a very obvious one indeed plus all the very expensive cars you see in latvia and houses with big gardens that latvian people love, in every village you go. This is not how people in poor places live, they live in slams ir tent cities without water or at at least a clean one, no medical care and plenty of other things. Latvia is in the top 30 of the most developed countries in the world out of 195 in the world

Latvians were allowed to speak their own language during Soviet times. So your statement is totally incorrect. All of the signs on the streets were in both Russian and Latvian, while there were even Latvian schools and festivals. Latvia was one of the wealthiest republics during Soviet times.

Thanks for your comment. During this time, there were undoubtedly instances of cultural preservation. However, there were also instances of political repression, russification policies, and restrictions on freedoms. During its time in the Soviet Union, Latvia, like other Soviet republics, experienced a mixture of opportunities and challenges.

You are wrong. When I was child, firstly first to me pushed to learn to speak, to read and to write Russian and Latvian considered not necessary to learn. Now most Latvians who older than 40 to many of us easier to communicate in Russian. Was genocide to Latvians in USSR

Unfortunately the city is dying. Hopefully for every visitor the city looks the same way it is in this video. But in general, the roads are just awful, the tourism is dead, half of the storefronts in the city centre are up for rent since doing business is impossible at the moment.. Yet, the neighboring Tallinn is hitting records in terms of visitors, Vilnius is blossoming aswell, its enough to look at the busuiness centres being built there. All thanks to our "great" government that is milking the folk and not willing to focus on the economy of not only the capital, but also the country in general.

Par šādu stāvokli, paši latvieši vien ir vainīgi. Paši sabalso un pacieš partijas/valdības, kuras šo valsti iznīcina, un tad brīnās un čīkst par sekām.
