Malin, everyone praises Johan's work every week for good reason, as you offered praise too. We all realize the equal amount of effort and work you contribute. Often, it isn't seen. Maintaining a home, caring for a child, creating weekly videos, and helping out on the boat is more than a full-time job. Please don't underestimate your contribution. Thanks for sharing.

Since the early episodes of the series I've seen Malin as the core of RAN. Johan was the sailor - but Malin brought the vision & business acumen necessary to make it all work. We see Johan working, but I get the feeling it's Malin that created their professionalism & opportunities.

Over the years Johan’s confidence in front of the camera has escalated to a point where he now shines as a teacher as well as a master craftsman, initially I was worried that the boat building may become boring but the opposite has happened and I eagerly await the next weeks episode

when i rebuilt my little (much smaller than yours) boat i wrote little things on each piece to commemorate milestones, injuries incurred or silly things i.e: "finished 3/4/19... today doggy ran out and we spent an hour chasing him." or, "finished 5/6/19... we had pancakes for breakfast!!! :)" to this day when im cleaning out the bilge or the daggerboard trunk i can still read those little snippets of life. good times!

I often find things written on hidden parts of my boat, but in French because it was built there. Most times it is just to identify locations, but some times it personalises the builders workers because they made notes on some parts.

I have been following you on KZbin since your first videos, watched Vera grow, and I am thrilled about the project of your new boat. With the emergence of cancer in January, I was saddened by the possibility of not seeing the new sailboat completed. I had surgery in March, which significantly improved my expectations of being able to see you sailing again.

Hi guys, Cedar can be very springy and has a tendency to bind when ripping the planks. Make yourself a long thin wedge to drop into the cut as you draw it from the back of the saw table. As a carpenter and patternmaker of can tell you that you are doing a great job on that stem piece.

i hope that you are able to get the dust collector hooked up to the saw.....perhaps making a square funnel out of cardboard or sheeting that can be attached to the hose of the dust collector to help catch the chips/dust? your videos are still the best on the web in my opinion. Please continue making them. My family loves the technical and visual aspects of your productions and I enjoy the cleanliness of your channel (I can watch it with my family and not have to worry about seeing certain content (nudity, bad language or disturbing actions)... that other channels put in just to get a viewers)! Considering all of the saw dust you will be making during the course of this project you might want to think about picking a centrifugal dust separator, sometimes called a cyclone dust separator. Ones that can be added to your shop vac are very inexpensive and will pay for themselves very quickly as you won't be paying for filters for your shop vac nearly as often. They can be fitted to large drums making it much easier to collect large volumes of saw dust.

Having a shipbuilding past (steel and aluminum), I find it fascinating to watch your build. I had a friend in San Diego, Ca. that built a "cedar strip" vessel, I'd seen the finished product and not the actual build. The dimensions were similar to yours, and I've gained a whole new respect for the man. I appreciate that you are taking us along with this.

If you have a metal shop locally that does ventilation ducting it would be a quick and easy job for them to make up a square to round adaptor. Galvanised steel, some pop rivets and mastic would do the trick. Looking good!
@HayesHaugen
@HayesHaugen Жыл бұрын
I think your project would gain quite a bit with the addition of a 3D Printer to the mix - maybe not quite yet but soon. Already a quick and easy one would be the little adapter for the dust collection on the saw. You will be needing many custom brackets, adapters, clips, mechanisms, holders, etc. A 3D printer allows you to fairly quickly make these and if the material properties are not quite right you can send it out to a service to print in just about anything including metal.

Hi. When ripping larger sizes you may need to have some wooden wedges to help with the pinching on the blade. If you can find a bandsaw to rip there will be less "loss" from the blade width. Awsome work.😊

Hi Johan, Your doing a great job and ripping the cedar down is going to be a huge job. Can I suggest making your self a better table at the end of the saw where the cut timber is heading. The supports you have may move, I have the same and they are quite flimssy. You could mount the rollers off them on to the table if you wanted or buy a ball type. Once you start you wont want to be mucking around with supports that are not doing their job properly. Cheers and keep up the good work. Ian New Zealand.

Taking a day or two to get a power feeder, build a proper infeed and outfeed table, and getting your dust collection squared away will pay off very quickly. You guys are going to be doing a LOT of milling, and you can sell your gear after the wood is milled. Nice work so far. Getting those frame molds lined up perfectly is a really fiddly job, and you nailed it. Good luck!

Awesome channel. Janice husband here Harley.Back in the 80s my dad and I built a catamaran sailboat with a oak stems . We cover the oak with polyester resin and fb cloth. The oaks natural oil from being out in element and changing weather (Ontario Canada) delaminated the sealed stem. Very hard to keep fiber glass attached to oak. After asking around this wasn’t just my experience. Keep up the awesome boat build.

This is an awesome channel! But you should drive all the large cedar planks first with plane. When at least one side of the plank is smooth, then put that smooth side against the saw "table" and it will slide nicely in that saw. I will normally plane all sides of big wood before sawing. When having two sides planed then one goes for table and one side against driver. English is not my first language, but hope this makes sense...

Since binge watching your channel over the last year, I learned so much, and have opened up my mind to so many other possibilities and new information. Not to mention, I'm still working my way through your previous seasons, and since my kids are all grown and gone, I have so loved watching your young family (though I'm not actually that much older). Perhaps you could borrow a Logosol bandsaw mill or buy a used one. You would not have to buy a power feeder. The bandsaw curf would not waste as much wood and you could cut many flanks at the same pass of the blade. If you bought a new machine you could easily sell it when the boat is complete.

Johan, at 08:40 you mentioned the sharpness of your compass plane, I believe you probably had the sharpness and the set-up spot on. My grandfather who was a shipwright for many years in the northeast U.S. always told me the planes he found most difficult to use were the ones least used. Sure enough the planes in his tool collection, 200 + planes alone, the compass planes are in great shape. I think he would have tackled that task the same as you. As always fine job....tm

Really fun watching Johan do wood working, he's really good at it! For the square to round connection, perhaps it's possible to find someone who can 3D print and adapter, assuming the side loads are not too high (like a very heavy hose might be a bit much for 3D print unless it's resin)? And also need to praise Malin, great editing, working with the boat and doing everything else that needs to be done!
