This is a real life story. The taxi driver had a cancer soon after the event,, and passed away. That’s why the reporter couldn’t find him. A son of the taxi driver, who saw the movie after the movie release, found that it was his father’s story, and informed the media and wife of the deceased reporter.

The background of the film is in May 1980, and at that time, a soldier named Chun Doo-hwan led his forces, declared martial law, and took control of the country. Citizens in Gwangju protested calling for the resignation of Chun Doo-hwan, military forces, and the abolition of martial law, and Chun Doo-hwan sent an airborne unit to slaughter the citizens. After 10 days of protest movement in Gwangju, there were casualties of 166 dead, 54 missing, 376 fatalities with differential sequelae, and 3,139 injured. Chun took control and manipulated all media, making it mandatory for the press to censor it in advance, and control news coverage. Just like this movie, Jürgen Hinzpeter, a reporter for ARD, Germany's first public broadcaster, risked his life to cover and report this tragedy to the world for the first time. This movie is based on a real incident like this.

Many scenes were adapted for the movie, but a real reporter said that the story of a soldier who sent a taxi to Seoul even though he knew about it was real For your information, the reality was more cruel and terrible than the movie Many innocent civilians were killed by military dictatorship If it weren't for Gwangju's democratization movement, Korea wouldn't be here today

I am Korean. People in the rest of the world didn't know about the Gwangju uprising during the military dictatorship. It was my father's time, and he said he didn't know about it, either. He just knew that North Korean troops had entered the Gwangju area and that there was a military operation going on, because that's what the military regime said, and that's what all the media said. There's a recent Korean movie called "Spring in Seoul". It tells the story of how that military revolted and stole the country. By the 1990s, the military was liquidated and a democratic regime came in. A lot of people protested against the dictatorship, and that's how they achieved democracy. There was a lot of blood and sacrifice. We don't get democracy for free.

I was junior school boy at that time. All mass-media lied to the korean people and the situation was more terrible compare to the movie. Now, military dictatorship is already over and finally, South Korea became a ture democratic free country. Now, my country became a advanced country. Before that, So many young people had to sacrificed themselves for my country. This movie is telling us a true sad korean history.

There's an incredible trick during the massacre scene where tiny snippets of actual footage are spliced into the sequence. They're so quick and so subtle, yet somehow your brain instinctively picks up on them and recognises them, regardless. It put me over the edge in the theatre - lost it.

Historical fact: At the time of the incident in 1980, the United States goverment tolerated the movement of martial law troops to Gwangju for fear of North Korea invasion to South korea. After seeing the incident unfold, they were shocked. In 1987, protests spread nationwide again and the military regime tried to mobilize martial law troops again. so the United States threatened to move U.S. force to crush them down if that happens again, and democratization was accomplished finally.

Thank you for sharing this film. I am from Gwangju and my parents have lived here their whole life. I remember my mom telling me that she was in middle school and was happy not to go to school but had to go down to the basement with a thick blanket to protect her from bullets. My grandmother was trying to protect her house because the soldiers were going up to the top of the building and trying to shoot the civilians, so she shouted, 'If you want to occupy this building, shoot me and do it.' Still some Korean think it is fake and some discrimination happens and also I had some. However, I am proud that I am from Gwangju because our city is a symbol of Korean democracy.

This is based on a real story. During the 1980s, there was a military coup with Chun leading the rebellion. While the previous regime's dictatorship (brutal and inhumane) is credited with helping Korea's economic growth, Chun's was largely one of insane level of corruption and police brutality. There were protests in other cities, but the city of Gwangju was the largest. It was a peaceful protest with Korean citizens blocking the roads with rallies. However, Chun decided to declare martial law in that city and closed it so that no one can go in and out. No one outside of Gwangju knew what was happening inside the city (all they knew was government propaganda that the city had an communist uprising so that's why the military had to intervene). However, what is depicted in the film is only the surface. The police brutality, shooting was one thing, but there was also interrogation room tortures like drowning that occurred to get the suspects to falsely admit they were communist when they were only protesters. However, thanks largely due to the German reporter, word spread rapidly about what was really happening there which led to Chun being forced to allow a fair and open election instead of a rigged one. What's even worse is that while he was sentenced to his death in 1996, he was pardoned by the second successor president. During his reign, he had embezzled a lot of money and had large slush funds which were never paid back. His house was always guarded to make sure no one would attempt to assassinate him because he was pretty much the most hated "president". There's even a film about assassinating him called 26 years which was a box office hit. It's also a note to add that he was unapologetic even after his term citing that under him, Korea was able to achieve unprecedented economic growth but many agree it was largely due to the previous dictatorship Park

Based on true story, a significant democracy movement by the brave Korean citizens of Gwangju back in 1980. To briefly tell, this started as non-violent protest by the people of Gwangju in hoped to wake the nation to their ever-wanted democracy over long ruling of military authoritarianism. President at the time who is known as infamous oppressor Chun Doo-Hwan ordered a martial law on his own people to stop the protesting in fear of movement spreading nationwide which would devastate Chun's trust from people. It is still argued among the people with one side viewing it as democracy movement and a side viewing it as a riot, mutiny against the government. Either way, this made the country to become more democratic inevitably resulting the country to fully turn into a free democratic capitalistic society with equal rights. South Korea is definitely one of few countries in the world with unique democracy regime and collectivist society deeply rooted in Confucianism. Koreans tend to use the word "Our" rather than "my" when referring to belonging and ownership in conversations. Age is a big thing there also. It is easy to see mutual respect being shared among the people often seeing people bow down to elders when greeting. Koreans almost never put themselves(individual aspects) over social morality.

The May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising was a tragedy and a turning point that had a huge impact on modern Korean history. At that time, the military forces brutally massacred the civilians of Gwangju to seize power, and angry Gwangju citizens organized a citizen army and fiercely resisted. Although the uprising was suppressed by the rebels, the desperate sacrifice and resistance of the citizens of Gwangju became a valuable foundation for democracy in the Republic of Korea.
