Hi, thanks for the amazing tips. I have an interview in a few days and would be grateful if I could have some ideas for teaching character description to a year 1 class based on the character Funni from the secret sky garden. So far I'm thinking of creating a story box which acts as the setting- with parts of the story inside the box and using those as clues to mind map character triats. I will also have the character in the box and ask children to talk to their partner and discuss.

I love the idea of the story box! Year 1 isn’t my area of expertise but being a character description is focus heavily on adjectives to describe looks, feelings and atmosphere. Possibly even setting description though I know you’re focusing on character more. How long is the lesson? Make sure it’s in small chunks with the children doing lots, not sat listening for more than a few minutes! Hope it goes well, let me know how you get on!

Hello, thank you for your tips. I am a associate teacher going for my first teacher role (it was my first placement) interview for Friday. I have to do a 15 minute lesson with year 4, on any subject. This has thrown me! Any advice would be amazing please?

Hi! Good luck with your interview! I’d pick a subject you enjoy and make it a quick snappy lesson. Do 2-3 minutes to introduce the skill the children are practicing and demonstrate how to do it. Once you’ve shown children how to complete the task quickly explain your expectations for the noise level and then allow them to complete the task for 4-5 minutes. Have a quick pause to alert the children to any misconceptions you may have heard while observing round the room and then let them continue for 2 more minutes. Then I’d do a couple minutes summary of the work and do a quick activity to finish off to show how to apply this skill to a harder question. Hope this helps and good luck again!
