He wanted to find it himself so that he can be the one famous. If you don't remember in chapter 17 Elana asked nate why rfe wanted the treasure. It was not because of the money but for the glory. Nathan already made a lot of discoveries but rafe wanted this one. He wanted the treasure.

I still think that some of Nadine's mercs should have remained loyal and it would have mirrored the fights between Captain Avery the paranoid control freak and pirate, then his former right hand now turned traitor who had taken some of his crews and sparked a civil war. Would have been the perfect way to end it. A second civil war happening on the same ground over the same treasure.

I'll never forgive that SOB for what he did. So, you see, Nathan Drake is the good guy. He won and got a happy end. He got his reward. The good guys always win in the Uncharted series.

I think one of my favorite details that the developers put into this game was the difference in the characters gun holsters. Like Nathan had his under his arm pit, Sam has his tucked into the back of his pants, Sully has his hanging from his belt, Elena had hers tucked into the side of her pants and Nadine had hers stitched into her pants on her thigh.
