The story where Clancy got his idea for the book is the most interesting. In 1970s a political officer took command of a Soviet destroyer (or some other large naval ship), he managed to lock up the captain convinced rest of officer crew (except one) to go with his plan. Plan was to take this ship off the coast of Leningrad then use ship's radio equipment to broadcast how Brezhnev and his cronies have lost the cause of the Bolsheviks and become corrupt. This lead the rest of Soviet navy and air forces to locate this ship and sink it. Swedes were monitoring all this stuff (they were neutral but had significant elint) and notified NATO, "don't worry, they are not launching an attack on Europe, they are out to sink a renegade ship). The political officer didn't succeed, captain managed to escape and barely able to call off further attacks. Fascinating story!

The tankers were probably carrying mazut AKA "sour crude". Mazut is pretty much the lowest grade of petroleum fuel you can buy. It has tons of foreign particulates & a high sulfur content (up to 3%). Russians use mazut like bunker fuel. It cokes up the insides of your powerplant something fierce. It's the fuel that killed the powerplants of the last, remaining Russian aircraft carrier, the woeful & "mostly dead" Admiral Kuznetsov (shout out to Miracle Max! we had fun storming the castle!).

As a Dane living in Denmark, I regret to say that the Danish Navy is likely unable to effectively engage any vessel due to a lack of maintenance and functional weapon systems -a significant issue. Unfortunately, we would likely have to rely on Denmark's allies for support in this role, hopefully Sweden. Decades of peace-focused and socialist governments have reduced defense budgets, and we are only now beginning to realize the consequences... Sad. #NotProud

When the Russians asked for my advice I warned them that these vessels could not handle the stress when they would engage the silent MHD or Caterpillar drive that they installed. Sadly they didn’t listen and so when they engage the drive, the entire crew starts singing the Russian National Anthem and they don’t notice when the vessels start breaking apart….”Let them sing Yuri …!”

Being a long time sailor in the US Navy (USS Canberra CAG-2, USS Dahlgren DLG-12, and USS Jouett CG-29), I find naval/sailing movies often miss what really happens out there. However, like you, many of the character's lines could really apply and are wonderfully done. Hunt for Red October, as you said, is one of the great line movies. " Love It " Note: The USS Canberra CAG-2 had several serious encounters with the Russians before and during the Cuban Missile Crisis when I was onboard. Later when on the USS Jouet CG-29 we also had an encounter with several AGI's (spy ships disguised as fishing ships) off the USA West Coast. These incidents makes that movie all the more interesting.

@pauln68039 сағат бұрын
I doubt Putin would ever truly back down. He might say he would negotiate and sign a peace treaty, but realistically neither side would stop until their own objectives are met. Zelenskyy obviously wants a complete Russian withdrawal, NATO/EU membership to guarantee Ukrainian security, and reparations for the rebuilding Ukraine. Putin still wants control over Ukrainian assets, natural resources and a puppet government that will allow Russian military and bases on Ukrainian soil and further ports in the Black sea. Remember that Putin operates more like a mob boss than a Western political party leader. He merely uses elections to maintain the facade of a democratic leader.

It's nnot the sanctions, it's the barrage designed to protect the Kerch bridge, as described in the last episode. Smaller, inland river and canal boats which are not designed or built to handle twisting and swells are having to go into the Black sea to pick up carg now. They face stresses well beyond their design remit, so colapse in the storm.

Transferring oil within the territorial area of a country or to export terminals on the coast... Seems like a pipeline job? I get that they can also transfer to ships already out in the water. However to me this seems like an odd job to be doing with these ships over pipelines as they also dont individually carry enough to fill a seafaring tanker.
