6:26-6:36 Honest question, have you ever been to school? Even the game itself explains it that they turn a blind eye on bullying to keep its prestigious status, and expelling students would hurt its reputation. That's the in-game explanation, and that's how it works here on planet Earth too
@Arcananine77 Жыл бұрын
12:37 - 13:02 I think this complaint can be explained by the fact that "Yakuza: Like a Dragon" and "Lost Judgment" approach the same subject in different ways. Said subject being the idea of "gray areas", legal or moral. Where the former portrays them favorably to the point of idealization; the latter basically argues that gray areas can be very dangerous in their own ways, and that excusing or looking away from shady practices in service of a nebulous "greater good" or "status quo" can have devastating consequences, whether it's at a school or in society at large. That was my takeaway from the game at least. Not simply "bullying is bad"; but rather "be careful of embracing what you deem a lesser evil".

I really disagree with your assessment on Kuwana. I think he's the best antagonist in the series and especially an upgrade from Judge Eyes' antagonist who was just a killer without much motivation or exploration of his corruption. Kuwana being very similar to Yagami but disagreeing on correcting the justice system is what makes him a perfect antagonist for me. Them debating their ideals with each other is much more than what you usually get with this series and their ideals are backed up with their actions, since Kuwana kills people and blackmails his former students and Yagami tries as hard as he can without doing any of that and being a good guy. It makes Yagami's struggle throughout both games and your journey as a player feel meaningful, as he of course wins at the end and makes the world a better place because of it. It's downright inspiring as someone who has often felt that Kuwana's method was the only way to make a difference despite becoming a problem of it's own.
@pigmuffin35819 ай бұрын
the issue with Kuwana is that he's sorta fake deep. He falls into the classic RGG trope of "this bad guy is actually....... GOOD?" near the end of his arc and most people (myself included) were just suuuuuuuuuuuper tired of it by the point this game came out. If he was one of like 2-3 antagonists in the series it would be been completely fine but it's just an eyeroll at this point. The reason people like Kuriowa so much is because he's super out of character just insane for the studio, no turnaround or redemption etc just a cold blooded menacing lunatic. so much so Sega had to tell them to chill out with the violence for the sequel (when LJ was being developed)
@matteoguala72674 ай бұрын
A killer doesn't have a true motivation to do it, he's just a psycho who doesn't feel pity, Kuroiwa was one of them. To me it's refreshing to see a main villain in a yakuza game that doesn't get justified, it's not like you always have to understand a villain.

Yeesh! This was scathing! What made this game a more enjoyable experience for me was the fact that I could change the text to Spanish and the voice-acting to English. This allowed me to make playing Lost Judgment into an activity I can do with my mom, who is a native Spanish speaker but has a decent grasp at English. We both enjoyed the melodrama and, while I abhorred the first-person portions where I had to look for clues to progress, I got a huge kick out of the OST of this game. I adore the Judgment games, I honestly prefer them to the mainline Yakuza games, but this video perfectly captures why I was really letdown by this game’s narrative especially considering how much I loved the story of the first game. Combat is easily the best it’s ever been and that alone puts it in at least top 3 RGG titles.
@GrooseyGroose Жыл бұрын
Although I agree with several main points brought up in this video, such as the main cast being incredibly underutilized and the bullying investigation being asinine, I think this video is overly harsh on Lost Judgment for failing to do things it wasn't intending to do in the first place as well as holding it to standards that every other game in the series also fails to meet. I love the series but it seems unfair to single out LJ for exposition dumps, static dialogue scenes, and repeating of information when the main series and Kaito Files both had multiple scenes where the main character literally sits down for several minutes with a dedicated exposition dump character to have the plot explained to them. I'm also surprised that you had such high praise for Kaito Files, which I strongly disliked for its treatment of Mikiko as a character and its glossing over of how despicable Shirakaba's behavior towards Mikiko was to the extent of framing him as honorable. Mikiko fell into the classic RGG trap of being introduced as a strong-willed female character but taking away her agency by having her fail at everything she set out to do and ending up a damsel in distress (a la Sayama). I found the scene of Kenmochi pretending to have sexually assaulted Mikiko in order to provoke Kaito one of the most distasteful in the entire series and incredibly disrespectful to her character. I also agree that the dynamic between Yagami, Sawa, and Kuwana is mediocre, but in my opinion, Kuwana's character becomes fantastic when you view him in isolation from Yagami. His relationship with Kusumoto is one of the best written in the series, with his undying loyalty born out of such horrendous guilt that he breaks down sobbing when Kusumoto tries to release him from his burden in the epilogue.

I'll admit I was pretty forgiving to the first Judgment game but I'd still be willing go back and replay it over its sequel. Lost Judgment earned its title. I'm all for lowering the stakes to tell a story, but then they up the ante very quickly and very considerably. A simple case about bullying then leads to a giant government conspiracy that is ultimately unresolved and a bad guy being judged but not receiving Judgement. "Cognitive dissonance" is what I'm feeling with these characters and this narrative. (Not sure if I'm using the term correctly.)

Nin-Nin! Ryan Acosta fans unite! This may be the last time I get to cheer for everyone's favorite weeb on a GC video, I hope you'll permit me this one final offense. You make a good point that people feel less like characters. When the principal turns towards the camera and gives a dissertation off-the-cuff on statistics and bullying and why people bully and what-have-you, it's so unrealistic. It would be LESS unbelievable if he pulled out a folder with a bunch of statistics and said aloud he had been looking into it because he was concerned. But instead you get plot dumps that really show the writer's hand that they do not actually understand what they're talking about and they did precious little research into it. It has the energy of an after-school PSA where the characters summarize the message for you and give the moral explicitly, but the moral itself is confused here. Bless the Kaito Files though, the vibes were immaculate and it just felt so good and consistent all the way through. But I have to dock a couple points because Kaito did not use the forbidden Warp Kick technique to delete a high school student from reality.

ok, the intro and the "scientific" explanation of bullying, hitting highschoolers, the victimizing of women, and the bad writing with things like the microphone in the classroom, all were bad, buuuuuut I feel Yagami has more of a personality of his own in this in this one, also I feel the story was actually a story, not a pasting of side stories to fill all the holes shown as the main story of the game, like Judment, also I found so ridiculous the "saving the world plot" because all the story was around a cure for Alzheimer, I rally appreciate they focused in a case in this game. I also like the new characters, I would have loved more Higashi in the game thought. Welp, unfortunate that you did not like Lost Judgment all that much better than Judgment. While I did enjoy the story of LJ, I completely understand you're criticisms of it. I think something that makes Furuta's writing make more sense in its structure when you take into account that players could spend tens of hours between main story scenes doing side stuff. Taking that in mind, it makes the repetition of information more logical and palatable to the player. However, I am not saying this is an excuse for it, merely that this may be a possible reason for why it is written the way it is. Given that other games in the franchise have handles this sort of thing much better, I completely get you're disdain for it. At least you enjoyed the Kaito Files. I hope for whatever the next judgment game ends up being that they manage to utilize their cast as well as it did. (Seriously, why was Mafuyu even in this game? She had, like, only two lines.)

I'm starting to think the sheer volume of side content is starting to hurt the main story of these games. Like you said, the direction of the dialogue scenes is just nonexistent, and I feel like if more of the budget went towards more pre-rendered cutscenes, which actually have detailed animation and engaging camerawork, and towards the dialogue scenes to make them have at least a bit more animation and more interesting direction, even if that wouldn't've fixed the bloated writing it could have made it more palpable. The worst example of this are 'cut-out' scenes where you have a cut-out of Yagami on one side and another character on the other with a blurred background. It's not even shot-reverse shot, it's somehow even more uninteresting than that! And I loved the school stories but I can't help but think there could have been half as much content to them and they still would have worked perfectly. Why do I have to race 3 wankers who contribute nothing to the story before getting to the Made In Heaven leaders, the actual characters? Stuff like this could have been cut down a lot and allowed for more budget to go into the actual main story.

As much as i love Lost Judgment, i have to agree with your points even though the game borrows alot of its story elements from its predecessor on why Yagami is still a flawed detective, even though i like the story of Judgment, Kaito Files, and the Keihin Gang and The professor side storyline. Im still dissapointed that Yagami still couldnt right his wrongs, im not saying that writing game stories and detective work should be easy but not once i saw the main antagonist facing defeat but they either usually die or flee the scene and hide from the public and Yagami actually succeed on his cases other than Soma getting arrested. If theres a 3rd Judgment game i hope he does become more experienced and some old mechanics from Judgment return and this time Yagami actually succeeds and brings justice. I still do like Lost Judgment's story though since i felt touched by the bullying parts on the story since i used to be a victim before but at some parts its confusing and dont make sense at all but overall, this game is still a S or A tier game. But im glad even though some story aspects are borrowed from Judgment but with different events. The main supporting characters from Judgment dont even appear that much on LJ for some reason like Mafuyu, Genda, Ayabe etc. i do hope some characters from Judgment do return in the main story as much if a 3rd game is possible.

I loved Judgment but really thought Lost Judgment fell short on surpassing its predecessor. It felt less like a detective crime drama and more like... whatever the fuck it ended up being. The RK gang as the primary antagonistic organization definitely made me feel like the developers would've rather made a Yakuza-themed game instead. Which, oddly enough, is a feeling I didn't get from The Kaito Files, where the protagonist is a literal Ex-Yakuza literally using two of Kiryu's fighting styles. Kuwana was alright, I just felt like the community overhyped him. I still think Kuroiwa was the better antagonist: The twist that the supposedly goody two shoes cop was the villain whereas the dirty cop was the more righteous one felt consistent with what was presented in previous RGG titles, mirroring Yakuza 4's dynamic between Tanimura and Munakata. I don't even know why Yagami and Kuwana had their final fight. It sure wasn't to make sure Kuwana doesn't go through with his plan, since he throws away his phone in the beginning. Kuroiwa however was a villain that actively needed to be stopped, and Yagami did just that by defeating him.

I enjoy your content, and awaited this video with much excitement after finally getting around to finishing LJ and feeling a very similar sense of disappointment. You do make a lot of GOOD points which I also agree with, however, you muddle those points with a lot of exaggeration and times where you are borderline get things wrong that make your viewpoint come off as much more disagreeable than it really is to the average viewer. Cinemasins-esque nitpicking doesn't contribute to your criticism. Things which other commenters have pointed out like the fact you didn't pay attention to the fact that the principal says vocally in dialogue twice that he doesn't want to expel students, he want to cover up the bullying and prevent it anonymously which is likened to real life institutions. A lot of schools don't even take that second step, which is why the joke of "You're the one punished for hitting the bully back" is so commonplace in modern society. Because it's true, and the game depicts that well. I very much agree that the story is confused. It lacks footwork, and is lost in what it tries to do. It ends up doing justice to none of the morals it tries to present because they don't really go anywhere, and it ends up feeling flanderized in almost every aspect. Rather than Yagami pushing his views in any stronger way (Kuwana being called a serial killer is laughed off, which I found embarassing from a writing perspective.) he just clings onto muh sawa, muh sawa, muh sawa, muh sawa. It's not endearing, and it makes Kuwana look like he's in the right, which he shouldn't be. He doesn't achieve anything by hunting down and murdering PAST bullies. All he achieves is some form of minor catharsis for the victims, but it doesn't achieve anything in the slightest. The fact the characters cross their arms and go "Hmmmmm, this guy has a point." Is actually infuriating, and I could not find myself stomaching a large part of the plot past the first five chapters. It's as you said. Empty characters spouting trivia and moral debates for the sake of trying to emulate the feeling of an actual story where things happen, when in reality you're backtracking the same info, coming to the same conclusions and nothing is truly happening until you're giving a payoff with no build up, that feels unsatisfying. While Judgment at least tried to be a new idea, Lost Judgment is just a Yakuza game dressed up as a detective simulator, but it falls prey to the same mistakes of overcomplicated conspiracies, mixed messaging which is afraid to commit to a single stance without coming off extreme and charismatic characters misused by the authors.

Honestly, unlike Judgement where I was going back and forth with paying attention to wondering what the hell is goinf on. I was able to follow the plot of Lost Judgement pretty well. I would leave this game for a while due to being busy with school work, and though sometimes, I would have to look up some things, I would still be able to follow it. I also found myself more invested in this story than Judgement. I could not tell you whu. I just did. I found myself invested in Kuwana as a villain and his dynamic with Yagami. But that might have to do with my own personal experiences and views on justice. That said, I do understand your points, and I think it just comes down to the fact that we have our own views of storytelling. That being said, I still consider Furuta the worst writer of RGG studios. He feels more like he is trying to turn his college essays into a story, and that can get old really fast. So, my investments with Lost Judgement feel like an accident and I am not sure if I would hold the same view if I played it again. That being said, the Kaito Files, I actually loved. It actually made me realize how smart Kaito was and it had a balance of being silly and serious and it rolled with it. It felt like an Ace Attorney case, which is on purpose as it has one of the writers from the recent AA games. I did not like the final boss as a character of Kaito Files as I felt he was a bit too creepy, but we got to kick his ass so I am willing to overlook, plus the Kaito Files had the sense to realize how silly the final boss is. This is the only video I watched before finishing the game. I bought it few months ago on a sale for 1 € but can't force my self to continue past chapter 5 becouse of the plot. Also I don't know if this is only mi problem but Yagamis combat feels reali bloated. You have 4 fighting stiles and 6 combat skill "trees" all with at least 50 upgrades from witch some have almost same input but one is a heet action.The only reason why i want to finish the main game is so i can beat the only Amon mising.

I really enjoyed the combat of Lost Judgment, but I can absolutely see it feeling bloated for some players!

@@GCVazquez Also, one thing that pisses me off is that they waisted the school setting on Yagami insted of Saejima solo game. Like can you imagine a game where Daigo uses his influence to fulfill Saejimas dreem and make him a teacher that would be the best thing ever.

I don’t disagree with any of this, but I have to emphasise the part that just broke me. Broke me from the introduction. Couldn’t get past it. I’m a 38 year old man. Beating up children. It’s just a shock. Right off the bat, first time. I kept waiting for how this would resolve without a fight. He scares them off. He gets them to trip into objects and hurt themselves without ever hitting them. He shames them into backing off. Nope, he just slugs them. 38 year old man. Hitting minors. In late teens, fine, but still children. That for me was the whole ball of wax. No matter how good any of the rest of it was, that was so profoundly uncomfortable that it would never get past it. I found it morally repugnant.

Honestly I thought it was kind of funny! I just also wish the game leaned more into that sort of non-combat way to deal with the kids. Especially since you never fight a mix of kids and adults at the same time, it would've been cool to get forced into a fighting style unique to dealing with the kids, right?

@@GCVazquez Maybe where it disables attacks, dodges and blocks build heat, and environmental heat attacks are you dodging so the kids slam into walls or fall into bins, etc? Maybe.

Oh, I can't *wait* for this. (I _really_ hated Lost Judgment. Detested it.)
