OK... This comes across as a bit frustrated. But skip the preamble and hit 10 minute mark for combat example. there is a lot going on in the game system. skip to 11 minute mark.

Is it possible that with all the Ardennes games out there, perhaps even the extraordinary work by the designer in this game demonstrates that enough is enough? In order to go deeper and offer the player more, the more details and chrome pile up and get in the way of playability, while not necessarily revealing any more about the event. Perhaps this problem is more tied to the rulebook than anything else. But it sounds like it may well be a larger issue with the event because it's been done over and over again, thereby compelling new designs to do more and end up with less. Not sure about any of that, but thought it might be worth bringing up. Thanks for the video, and to Bruno S. for the game.

Thanks for filming Kev, really appreciate a more in-depth look into this title. That's one of the titles that really draws me in. I'm a counter hoarder and really like operational games at a battalion/company level (BCS/TCS) due to some bad experiences with regimental-level games before (where there was no way to setup a meaningful defense due to map/road networks. I also like that the game is by an expert on the subject, so likely to represent the battle well. On the other hand I'm not a big fan of pages upon pages of chrome so might give this one a pass :( Suppose it's all down to if I like Deadly Woods by Ted Raicer that's waiting for it's time on the shelf...

I still think titles such as A'44 and Tide of Iron provide a comprehensive view of the battle with enough flavour and history to make it feel right. I was not as much excited about Deadly Woods. Racier has a habit of making odd decisions about his 'systems' and how they apply to the circumstances presented in a battle or campaign

@@war_gamer Thanks for your opinion on the Deadly Woods - don't have enough experience with him yet and not a big fan of everyone's favourite Paths of Glory but got both The Dark Summer and Deadly Woods, seems like they are both quite similar so hopefully it won't be too difficult to learn one once I learn the other...

Very informative. The game is not too crunchy, it's more like Turkish taffy, meaning you have to break it into lots of pieces, chew on each for a long time and suck it all down. Fortunately, it's got extremely nice flavor and a great wrapper!

Once you get to playing it and learn the basics the game flows really well. Early on is very frustrating for the Allies with all the historical restrictions and structure to make it a surprise attack, but later, once those restrictions are lifted you can do much better.

I just couldn't overcome that phase.... It was just way too frustrating and restrictive even just to setup, with all the specific notations and directions one needed to account for. Way too scripted for me.

I imagine that is the case. The basics, are basic. :). Lots of other overhead -disruptions, command, supply, AO's etcetc
