Brilliant video! I love how you've used your knowledge of and passion for oldschool to really showcase the differences between the earlier versions. I feel that as a community we know more about and are better at distinguishing the 2012 and later looks, while all the pre-2010 just get dumped under one broad umbrella of 'oldschool', when there is so much variation there. (Also, I know this is all done now, so can't really change things without reuploading the whole thing, but I spotted a spelling mistake... :c )

2004 is my favorite, and perhaps the fact that I came into it in 2003 was related to that. I went out of the fashion in 2008/2009 and came back to the fashion in 2018 and then suddenly it was a sea of chiffons, prints and lots of items available for the same series (one print= 2 jsk cuts, one OP, tights, OTKs, a head bow, related jewelry, a bag, etc). I had a lot of catching up to do in 2018, and the first slight panic I had when I went to the egl LJ was "where have all the lolitas gone?", and then googling, then asking reddit and then finding out that they're mostly on FB. I probably still am not fully up to date with all the past trends from between 2009 and 2018. Probably an unpopular opinion; I don't like chiffons. I don't care for prints much either.

I also don't like prints and I love the more mature lolita looks, not OTT and definitely not sweet. My fav is gothic lolita. How about you?

@@brunettezprettyr4296 My preference goes to early 2000s btssb style. And I probably like the all black outfits better than the colored ones or the black X white ones. I also like some early 2000s meta and AP. It was sometimes difficult to put a style label on brands back in the day. For example meta wasn't just doing sweet and neither was btssb. AP did some wacky things too. Meta did some longer dresses in the early 2000s that I would describe as gothic (or gothic leaning) that I would love to have.

I love this. Such a good video. The only detail that I think is missing is that wigs were considered pretty essential in the 2012 OTT sweet era. (Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly but I recall this being a thing?)

Oh they were a huge thing, literally and figuratively! But there were stillrebels who styled their own hair and refused to wear wigs, which is why I think we are going back to natural hair being favored now. Though I can't style my own hair for crap, so I will stick with wigs unless I'm doing old school 😂

This is a lovely educational video!! My personal favorite is the OTT sweet (though I don't fit into any of my prints from that era anymore :/) though I have a massive soft spot for old school lolita and I'm moving towards that.

This is such a good time line! And you even pointed out some things I never really thought about, like how heels and more relaxed hair are coming back in style now! Come to think of it, aren't solid pieces doing pretty well right now too? Maybe we're slowly looping back to 2004! (My #1, though prints from around 2006-2009 are my favorites in that category.)

There is pretty good mix in the styles for 2 years, which is nice so many different prefered directions can have a go be it OTT sweet, be it oldschool, vintage, hime...etc.
