BMW tech here, I have seen rear diffs making noise because the customer had a brand new tire installed in the rear and the other tire at half life. No SIB but it's something that the engineers told us to look out for.

Yep, and I've been told on BMW you can get a no shift complaint with no codes because of tires not being worn evenly.

Hey, Nice demo as always and showing the process. Just wanted to give a heads up since I had dealt with one doing the same thing. The rear diff won't need replacement, it will need fluid change and recalibration. The Diff is not your typical style, this one has a fluid pump, a control solenoid and a clutch pack in a drum with a piston. The noise you are hearing is from the clutch pack not grabbing well with old fluid. It is just like a BMW ATC transfer case that is in many other makes as well and those pop and jerk with old fluid (since it has a clutch in it also) until you service it. Based off the amplitude of the reading from the "knocking" it doesn't appear to be too severe and the fluid service will stop the rear diff from acting up. The one I did ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmrKiHWidpmBq9U ) turned out fine after the service, again just a pointer based off my experience I had, thanks again for sharing.

Based on the operation of the 4matic system if you just unplugged the rear diff solenoid and the noise goes away that would mean you need a new rear diff. Great example on how to use the tool.

More great content....Wondering if the initial bearing damage occurred at the same time as the tire replacement- (impact damage)?, then the snowball effect of the diff trying to operate with two different circumference tires causing it's demise. Sometimes customers have memory loss until you prod them a little bit. Again, good stuff. Al H.

I went to Ford Asset program in the mid 90's and Ford had an NVH tool that had like 8 magnets with probes and you place them all around the car. You then drive it and there was a chart book where you match up the frequency/pitch and what speed and it listed the most possible symptom! This reminded me of that tool!!

Did you say you were replacing the rear diff? Isn't it just the LSD binding due to the difference in rotation of each tyre being to high? As you said, I've seen clutched transfer cases toasted due to this but not many diffs.

**No “after the fix” video showing the before and after???😢 **I did notice when you first got in car at the 5:30 mark on the video the tire sizes aren’t entered. My guess is it did t matter in this situation but think if entered will it help with further diagnostics such as catching uneven wear or not? **Also if you take the antennas when you know the area you can move multiple antennas into one wheel area and with a little tweaking dang near get the area of the bearing that is bad identified albeit with enough mathematical calculations. **Also keep in mind each item on a vehicle makes its own waveform just as we do with waveform diagnostics. How cool would it be to be able to hook up via OBDII, drive the vehicle and based on the noise the vehicle be able to say this part is making this noise which in turn gives you the waveform this allowing faster diagnostics with improved efficiency. **With the advent of technology we’re getting closer and closer to this point.

Are you sure the diff is bad? If it’s got a limited slip or clutches, all it might need is two equal diameter tires and some limited slip additive diff fluid like Redline makes. The clutches will pop like that with two diff size tires or when going around corkers esp when hot. I’d put 4 new tires on it first and reassess before digging into that diff.

I still have my Matco version that I bought back in 93' or 94'. Not quit as fancy as yours, its strictly by ear through a set of headphones. But they made me sooooo much money over the years. No one in my dealer wanted to do the NVH or water leaks. Get good at it and there is money to be made.

On Hondas I lift up the car spin the wheel by hand can hear a bad bearing no problem-more of a grind not a pop.

If it was a normal vehicle (not European), a long screwdriver while running it up on the rack would have the same results. These tools are nice, but when that jeeps passenger rear window doesn't work, and you spend 3 hours only to find a broken wire in the driver's door hinge, it's hard to make the money to afford said tools. Please respond if I'm wrong. Likes and comments drive YT algorithms. It only helps the professor. Good video.

Great job! Just curious though Did you unplug the differential and see it the noise stops? I have had fluid service take care of some of these differential noise on this model and I also remove the solenoid and verify that it moving freely.

Different diameter tires can cause the spider gears to move,like when you make a turn. It's important to change all four tires at the same time.

our shop has something similar we call chassis ears. but is not like urs hook up to the laptop, it is just a simple color bar whenever those ears detect noises and bar color will changes.

Tool price doesn't determine customer charge. Shop that I work at charges an hour of labor. And we usually try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from and hook up a chassis ear.

Definitely tool does not determine the price. But when considering any tool purchase. One has to consider roi. So 1 hour diag for only the hardest to find noises. So not frequent enough for most shops. With no guarantee that you will get the job In the end. Hard pill to swallow. It's a great tool by a great company. And I'd love to have it. But unless your pulling this thing out often, it'll be hard to pay it off.

It's good for noise and vibrations. It's definitely paid for itself but we've had it for several years. Maybe not a short term ROI but in the long run it helps find difficult problems and once you're known for that you will get lots of other work.

Nvh can be a good tool,,,,but if it was me i wouldnt sell a wheelbearing without hearing it with a stethoscope on a lift....and id be leary about selling a diff till the vehicle had new,or evenly worn tires on it first...seen this with caddilacs with one. New tire and others worn out.......could be diff lock ,or transfer case kicking in from wheel speed diff

you can use steelman chassis ear leads hooked to a scope and will show the exact same thing for a fraction of the cost

Thanks for the video, but until you replace and confirm the fix(es) then this really doesn't hold water. Seen too many times people call a part, even after diagnosis, but be dead wrong. Don't take this the wrong way. Hopefully you can either edit the video at the end after repair, or even pin a comment. Something. I can wave a magic chicken bone at it and say the same thing.

1st check circumference of each rear tire....if off by more than 3/4 inch put two similar tires on rear....Check noise again....If car has LS in rear it could make a noise..Simply just do 4 new tires before diag. My 2 cents.
