Minimizing my “stuff” will never go away for me! It is a constant work in progress, and it has changed my life for the better. ❤

I adjusted my minimalist pref over the years (8) but honestly, I'm gonna be a minimalist forever, because it's not only about decluttering. It's a social, mental, digital, physically, health, time, money, etc lifestyle change to me. I changed my eating habits, I went deeper in therapy, I saved money, I cut out unhealthy relationships and put up boundaries, I stopped drinking and clubbing and cut down on caffeine, quit social media, go back to the gym, bullet journal and self care regularly, all because of minimalism guiding me one step at a time.

I totally agree with this. It was never supposed to be a trend, but a tool to help us manage our lives. I love minimalism. I am not extreme, but it has helped me become so much more balanced.

I agree with you. It was a huge fad a few years ago, but now the only people left talking about it are the people who are actually living it. I have many reasons for being a minimalist. Time, money, space, environmental concerns etc., and I plan on staying minimalist my whole life. It was so stressful before when I was filling my house with stuff that never got used and I had less money. Minimalism is a lifestyle choice not a fad.

I think it was big during the pandemic for obvious reasons. Now life has gone back essentially to exactly as it was, complete with too much stuff.

I decided 6 years ago to rid my home of everything I did not love or need, and since then now that my home is simplistic I make sure I continue to look around and declutter of anything I am not using or need to have… I also try to use the one in and one out , which for sure has kept inventory low…. I love living like this,I appreciate every single thing I own.and I just seem to be happy with my possessions

Hi Elin! I don’t usually do this, but I wanted to let you know that you are very much an inspiration to me. Just your quiet and peaceful spirit touches me and helps me go about my day in a better place. I’m sorry for the health issues you’re going through. My daughter has MS as well. I hope your day is as nice as you made mine.

I started my minimalism journey almost 30 years ago. The great thing about minimalism is that it works for different areas in life at different times. I started because I wanted to be better with money and get out of debt. With $40k in debt living paycheck to paycheck and no savings was stressful. Minimalism fixed that. Continuing minimalism moved into being satisfied with what I had that led into getting rid of more things into easier less complex life and so on. It always fit with the life situation I found myself in at the time and evolves and moves with you. It works with financial, stress, complexity, personal satisfaction, organization and many other things all at the same time or when each of these becomes a concern.

YES YES YES!! Thank you Elin, this was so good; insightful and true. All the buying and buying to make myself feel and look better . . . [when the' WHY' was never addressed.] Things have been changing for me and I can now shop with intention! : ) Instead of shopping because I need something 'emotionally', I shop for a new sweater because I Actually NEED a new sweater! ; ) and that is so freeing. I appreciate you, your wisdom, and insight~~

Another terrific vodeo. I love how you always go another step deeper. Minimalism is about self acceptance. You have to know who you are to know what to keep. Makes sense. You have to come to terms with the idea that you aren’t your fantasy self but the real you is pretty awesome. Makes sense. The other thing this made me think about is how minimalism isn’t just about decluttering but also about spending money wisely. For example, people convince themselves to not buy new clothes when they gain weight because they are going to lose it again, but in the mean time that don’t really have clothes that look great on them and they feel frumpy. Minimalism shows us that you can have a great wardrobe with few items. So with wise purchases you can create a wonderful wardrobe for the person you are today.= self acceptance

So much insight in this video! A minimalist/intentional lifestyle definitely is linked to how we view ourselves and our feeling of self worth. We know we are good enough and love ourselves no matter what! We have self respect and choose what is best for us right now. It is saying yes to our lives and becoming free. (What about that!!)

Love this❤️. I needed to hear it. Working on having less “stuff” and decluttering. I think all the “stuff” I’ve accumulated was trying to fill a void. I recognize that now. Having to much “stuff” has overwhelmed me. When I declutter it actually lifts a weight off my shoulders. Definitely need to appreciate what I already have.

Thanks for sharing this perspective Elin, it was really thought provoking and made me realise that after many years of decluttering, minimising and having to go without or live with less due to financial reasons, I have started to feel this way although until I watched the video I hadn't defined or acknowledged it.

I always gravitate back to minimalism. Like yeah i will get caught up and buy things and get messy etc. and then I’ll feel overwhelmed so i start decluttering my items, clearing my schedule, using up all the items i forgot about, ill even start cleaning up my diet and money habits.

Minimalism education is over, but lifestyle is in. What I hear often these days is Intentional Living...cos it ties minimalism and simplicity in itself, to be honest. I'm more of an Intentional and simple lifestyle cos minimalism in in that so it's no longer in singular. We're aware of it, just not in singular cos being Intentional covers it.
@angelasinyard374310 ай бұрын
I believe the lifestyle is still occurring, but most folks are worried about status and having. The high level and social status is not about going constantly to events or having the most stuff or the biggest. If inward peace is present, joy blossoms, and the materialistic side including clothes, jewelry, and shoes does not become our security. Prioritize your inward and the physical will not be hard to handle. I don't even have a desire to go to the mall, boutiques, or deal with social events now.

It's supposed to make things easier on a person. A clear space. A clear mind. It reduces stress. I love having the belongings I have but I'm definitely stressed. Stuff doesn't give us peace. Our mindsets. That helps.

Thank you, Elin! I've been on this journey of decluttering for some time now. Your perspective is very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing your insights. My biggest problem is letting go of sentimental items. For instance, as I was decluttering yesterday, I ran across a box filled with get well cards and sympathy cards from when my mom, at the age of 54, was suffering with overian cancer and then died a short 18 months later, which was in 1988. To this day, I can't let these get well cards and sympathy cards go, even though this time in my life was, and continues to be, extremely painful for me. I'm at a real lose as to what to do. Do you have any advice for this sentimental fool?
@alanotterbacher847110 ай бұрын
Hi Patricia your comment resonated with me & something similar I went thru. I would like to suggest something. Even though its difficult, go thru the cards again. Try to let go of some; (maybe from people you are not as familiar with or connected to.) Tell yourself you will get rid of at least a few. Then periodically do this again in 2024. Also, reduce the size of the box to as small as pos., and - if it's the sentiment of the card you're really attached to, cut off the picture and just keep the back half of the card. That reduces the size by half. Wishing you all the best in your journey.

I too find it very difficult to let go of sentimental pics and greeting cards. For years I kept them as last thing to declutter. Now I keep all of them that I can never let go..or are the most important to me. Rest all I have taken pictures of....and saved them in neatly labeled files on the Computer . Turns out I never go through most of them usually...as it makes me senti. But the very thought that they are there within reach on the computer ...is soothing by itself. 😊

I think all the people who only ever saw minimalism as just another ‘tick tok fad’ or an aesthetic only or just something to do to get attention ( be different then maybe their peers), they are the ones that are probably moving on to the next ‘trend’ or ‘fad’. It was difficult to see and understand ( even when minimalism was at its peak) how so many people ( despite all the great ‘youtubers’ like yourself and other that kept educating and explaining how ITS NOT AMOUNT THE NUMBER OF ITEMS A PERSON HAS) that would STILL only talk about it in terms of the number of items rather then a lifestyle or mindset shift. I believe THEY are the ones who have ‘moved on’ to the next trend or just ‘given up on minimalism’ and are back to ‘consumerism’ / ‘the norm’. Minimalism was a mindset and lifestyle change for me…it is now just a ‘part of me’ and my values…probably that’s the same point you’re making in this video in a different way.

You either have a real "ah ha" moment, and minimizing becomes a lifestyle, or it's just a fad that will pass.

Is it about the stuff or the attachment to the stuff? I walked away from 99% of my furniture and 75% of my belongings and didnt shed a tear. I'd much rather have this persprctive than fret over whether or not 5 t-shirts is 4 too many or do I love this mug or not. If I have 10 mugs I rotate and each has its place on the shelf and Im not buying more then I don’t care.
