Maybe instead of pen spotlights, you could do ink spotlights where you swatch inks on different brands of paper? Not all the time, just to mix it up. I'm always interested in seeing the difference paper makes on how inks look.

I think the thing about fountain pens is that they intersect with SO MANY subcultures, all of which are very different. You have crafters, scrapbookers, wet-ink sketch artists, stationery fans, dudes in flatcaps who smoke pipes and like pocket knives, straight razors, and moustache wax, steampunkers who like old Victorian and Edwardian gadgets, people who like luxury brands like LV bags, BMVs, and fancy pens, and more. Fountain pens overlap with ALL of them.

I’m a Grade 2 and 3 Teacher in Canada. My students are always fascinated by my fountain pens. This year, one boy has shown particular interest, asking me technical questions about how they work and their history. In the winter I asked his parents if it was ok for me to give him a pen as a reward in a vocabulary game we regularly play. They said it was fine and so I gave him a Preppy. Well, of course that led to other students wanting one as well. I bought a bundle of Preppies and extra cartridges, and to my surprise, there haven’t been any ink explosions or messy accidents. A couple of nibs have been damaged by too much pressure, but that’s about it. Two sets of parents have even bought their kids extra pens, though they were wiser and got disposable ones such as Varsities. Keep up the great work. Your pencasts are a much loved routine of my Saturday mornings.

My why. My father passed away in September. That was the start of my in-depth journaling. In November, I found fountain pens. That took my journaling to a new level. The excitement of a new pen or discovering a new ink is indescribable. Not many people understand that. Lol. I'm ok with that😊

I’m fairly new to the fountain pen world (since December when I bought a Pilot Kakuno) and find your videos are the most informative while still being entertaining. This past weekend I had to make a 4 hour drive home at night, so I listened to old episodes of the Pencast on Spotify and I did not feel tired the whole way home, which was kind of a miracle. I really enjoy listening to your tips, thoughts, and humour. Thanks for keeping me company on my long drive!

Loved Brian’s ink tour. I’m starting to fall down the fountain pen ink rabbit hole, and want to ask: will you come out with an “ink-hoarding dragon” sticker as a companion to the “pen-hoarding dragon” sticker? I’m starting to understand that feeling about using an ink I love but am not sure I can get more of.
@Dosbomber
@Dosbomber Ай бұрын
That would work out very nicely for me. I have a crude storage system for my growing collection of pens & inks in the form of those plastic "Sterilite" totes with locking lids. It's sufficient, with room for more, but not exactly elegant. Having a pen-hoarding dragon protecting one, and a new ink-hoarding dragon to protect the other would be ideal identification labeling that would bring a smile to my face every time I need them. 😄

@@Dosbomber I keep my pen ‘stuff’ in a small three drawer chest which has deep drawer space, and another little chest about the same size that has shallow drawers, like a map chest. I’ll be looking for something similar when I run out of room though. But for now I love my pens having their own little “fountain pens and inks” furniture. A keeper or watcher to sit on top is something to think about now!

With regards to introducing kids to fountain pens, I let my 3 year old daughter try a few the other day. She loves coloring, so I gave her ones with different inks (reds, greens and purples). She was very interested, but also gravitated toward the stabbing technique on the paper 😂. My son, 7, sees me making fountain pen videos and is incredibly interested in getting a fountain pen and learning cursive! I’m planning to gift him a Varsity or maybe a Safari this summer and give him some lessons. Should be a fun bonding activity. Kids, at least at a young age, will naturally be curious about what you’re interested in. Keeping it light and playful is key.

I visit and photograph ancient trees. The oldest bring the Fortingall Yew, (approx 5 thousand years old), and ponder the things that have happened in the world while it simply stood and grew and remained silent. Perhaps judging but not speaking. It grounds me and connects me with nature and the past, in the same way my pens connect me with my thoughts and words in a way no other kind of pen ever has.

Pen spotlight is a great segment! But I also really loved the currently inked version from today.. the "juicy broads" pen show was doing a segment where they show the pens they currently have inked, but also the bag they're using, and one of them is usually carrying a really fancy knife! I wouldn't mind if the pen spotlight became more occasional and was replaced by a 'currently carrying' segment. Great pencast as always!

Hi Drew! Hi Brian! I’m 13 months into the pen hobby and can’t thank you both for taking the time to create the Pen Cast. The hobby is my relief from my 6 day work week in healthcare. So it is a kind of quiet meditation for me when I explore my inks and create crazy swatches or if I journal. I attend a monthly local pen club and I get approached for my inks and swatch books and that’s how I will ask someone if they want to try my fountain pens. It’s not for everybody but I am thankful for the hobby. I have met all kinds of creative artistic people, to professionals and to fellow healthcare workers. But no matter how busy I am I need to have my time slot to watch the Pen Cast where I can learn more about hobby, learn about new products and get a good laugh from Brian and Drew from their humor. So for me the Pen Cast is a must weekly TO DO priority. It would be great if you could talk about the fancy nibs of Sailor and Pilot…I’m very interested in those. Maybe possibly we could see some writing samples with specialty nibs. Ready to get serious about investing in more higher end pens. So I will have lots of questions for Drew and Brian. Also I have a PenLux pen, would you consider carrying more pen colors of that brand as well as some Taiwan ink brands? Seeing that vintage OMAS ink made my day…I joined the hobby too late for that!Thanks for all that you do weekly for pen community!

Brian, to call that video project a labor of love would be sheer understatement. Happy birthday, Rachel! On mishaps being part of the culture: I've got a certain ink that's been too dry for a certain pen. Last night I filled a sample vial, added two drops of dishwashing liquid, reinked the pen with the mixture, and WHEEE!! Now, when I use the pen, I'm ready with a paper towel to waylay the ink when I get a sign that a blurp is coming, and I am gradually diluting the effect of the dishwashing liquid in the sample vial. As much hassle as that is, I am thrilled that I now have a well-flowing ink in my pen and that my ongoing dilution will eventually reach that sweet spot. In addition, the hack adds to my fountain pen milestones, like first nib swap, first barrel-fill conversion, etc. So, within reason, I am on Team Mishap.

Pen Culture: It seems that those in the pen culture (1) love the nuances since we seek the right feel for us between the pen, ink, and paper. (2) We enjoy the slowing down that analog requires of us. It allows us to process our thoughts better in this fast paced environment. (3) We find connection to the pen and the words we write with it.

Might you guys be able to do an "Ink Spotlight/Ink of the week" section where you folks use an ink for a couple days to a week and report your experiences using it on different paper, please? It honestly can be quite difficult to tell what the "true written" colour of an ink might be through swatches made using dip pens, likewise not all of us only use Tomoe River/Rhodia. Just thought you folks might be able to provide us viewers with a more comprehensive view on how might an ink work for daily use on different types of paper. Love what you guys do. Alright, you asked for input, here's mine. I am photographer, specializing in analog. Not only that but I sub-specialize in large format. Medium format is great too, although there's a bit of miniature format (35mm) in the mix. Shooting 20 large format sheets of film is possible in a day, but that wouldn't include developing, much less scanning or printing in the darkroom. And, if not scanned, these are not included in the count of bajillions of photos taken. Here's the other thing though about recording photographs on physical film and printing on paper: In 50 years time, anyone can look at the image by picking it up and looking at it. How many digital files will be viewable then? The question of whether anyone WANTS to see any of these images is debatable, but that's not my point. :) Great show! Thank you for putting this all together and posting.

About the 1 or 2 pens for $100 question, here's a specific example: Option 1 - Kaweco brass for $98; Option 2 - (actually 3 pens, not 2) - Kaweco Sport, same nib as the brass version for $30, Lamy Vista at $30, and Faber-Castell Hexo for about $40. I agree that the choice depends on the stage of your pen hobby. I have collected an insane number of fountain pens. For the first $100 I spent, I bought 14 pens. So at that stage I would have certainly picked option 2. Now I would most definitely go with option 1. The Kawco brass pen is so much nicer that the plastic version.

Love the ‘currently inked’ section. Also, maybe a spotlight on pen adjacent things - paper (different bindings, rulings, etc), letter writing stuff, pen comparisons (line up all the top 10 pens in a price range and show the big differences), live swab top 10 inks (or ink samples), recommendations that are non fp related (like the podcast the Nib Section would do), more guests from in the community or people who use FP’s like urban sketchers (ie Liz Steel), more photography stuff with Glenn, more warehouse and shipping stuff, behind the scenes re the website (what do you do intentionally. Like why is that “free ink” thing now in the bottom of my browser), etc. Thank you all for what you do. Thank you community!

I like to see your take on best pens/nibs for print writing, which are imho more B or BB nibs. Stubs are fine, but they vary too much in line width, which is, again imho, not ideal for a uniform balanced typeface. Not only the nib is important, also the feed for providing enough ink for the broad nibs. And of course the subject shading is closely related to broad nibs. I am still looking for the perfect broad smooth nib/pen (no stubs) for writing in print and with shading inks. Thank you for your endless passion and energy you invest into our beloved hobby. All the very best from Germany.

As a pen spotlight suggestion - it would be helpful to include insight on the writing experience from the perspective of Goulet team members who have differing pen-holding techniques. For example: writers who are a lefty, have small hands, use tripod/ quadrupod grip, or any other common physical factors that affects pens comfortability. It wouldn’t need to be lengthily, even just a quick run through of their overall writing experience would be so helpful for viewers to gauge interest for themselves. :)

I like this idea. I liked when they asked team members what pens they were currently enjoying, and I was going to ask for more of that. So I also think it would be interesting to have some team members all write with the same pen and describe the experience.

Great story, Brian, about the special video. I can remember when I was a kid having movie nights when Dad would put up a screen, set up a movie projector and we'd watch 8 mm silent home movies. He talked about editing them together so Mum gave him a movie editor for his birthday. You put the movie reel on one side, fed the film strip through a little backlit viewing window and wound it onto a reel on the other side. Then you moved through the film one frame at a time by winding that reel by hand. You marked where you wanted to edit and then cut and spliced the film strips together. Needless to say, not many of those home movies got edited.

I like pens, so much so I got Montblanc rollerball pen fillers and put them into G2 cases. Got through about 20 pages of paper before the pen fillers dried out. I wanted to get the best writing experience I could get, and the pen fillers weren't cutting it. I looked over an article about the best rollerballs and gel pens, and all the way at the bottom there was a note saying "if none of these work for you, try a fountain pen". Looked up fountain pens on KZbin, found Brian Goulet, got a Pilot Metropolitan, and I've been hooked ever since.

For @mikabattaglia or anyone trying to stop doom scrolling: First, evaluate when, where, and why you start doom scrolling. If it happens when you are away from home, you’ll have to pick an activity that can happen there. If it happens because you get distracted from something else you need to do, there’s a different piece of the puzzle to help you solve the problem. While not all hobbies fit all people, I might suggest coloring or doodling as a first break from scrolling. Long ago, well before adult coloring books, when I was at university, many of us used coloring as a way to distress. You can do it alone or socially in a group. You can even use ink to paint if you don’t want to use pencils, markers, or crayons.

I recently was going through my mother’s belongings from years ago. She always wrote with a fountain pen, and I loved her handwriting. I found her fountain pen! It’s a black SHEAFFER pen. The clip is silver and says SHEAFFER USA. The nib says SHEAFFER ITALIC B MADE IN USA and it has I think the number 8 on it. What kind of cartridge should I look for to be able to use it?

I’d love to see pen spotlights that are about vintage or rare pens - this information isn’t easy to come by To tie it back to marketability of existing stock, you can always talk about which modern pen might be most approximate to it.

I am not a person who reacts to ASMR, but the filling of colorful inks, the scratching of a nib with feedback, the wetness of the ink on paper, the way the various inks dry--they all get to even me. It is definitely about self care for me now. Practical considerations come in too-my hands hurt as I age and writing with fountain pens doesn’t. I wrote with a cheap school grade Pelikan FP with only blue cartridges as a child in an American school in Switzerland. When I was 13, my dad gave me a little pen and pencil set from MontBlanc (not the high end versions) with my initials on the barrels. I really hate a cheap pen that doesn’t write well. I went through my house and systematically tossed them all. Now even my ballpoints are Retro 51s. I also love that FPs are sustainable. With my ink collection, I could likely write for the rest of my life with what I have-but I won’t. My ink collection grows every year. Those Taccia boxes…….

Ideas: Manufacturer visits (design, engineering, manufacturing), fountain pens/ink in history (like what pen(s)/ink did well-known people use or how it became famous), pen/ink battle analysis from the same brand as they changed over time (swatching), ink mixing or pen part swapping contests, and just good old pen funny stories.

Q&A for next week - hey GP people! I recently purchased from you and got a complimentary bottle of Monteverde Blue Skies and I love it. The ink is super lovely and smooth on whatever paper I use. And it got me wondering… which inks are out there which offer a vibrant colour, but also offer a smooth ride on the page as I’ve tried lots of inks and none of them feel as good as Blue Skies!! Appreciate the videos and podcasts and thank you for educating me further into the world of fountain pens.

Try the “eel” editions from. Noodler. Like Monteverde, all the inks with Eel at the end are lubricated. Before you get worried, this isn’t like Noodler’s problematic inks like Baystate blue which is its own type of ink!
