In this video we take a interior tour of Hitachi 187M, a preserved Hitachi motor carriage at the ARHS Newport Railway Museum. Although normally closed to the public, the interior was opened up as part of the museum's school holiday itinerary.
187M entered service in September 1980, and was withdrawn in 2004, being donated to the museum a year later. The exterior of the carriage is without a livery, depicting the trains as they ran during the 1970's. The interior depicts the late 1990's refurbishment, featuring the iconic brown tartan seats, white wall panels, removed luggage racks, yellow poles and hard rubber floor.
The Hitachi EMU's were built from 1972 to 1981 by Martin & King. They were retired from service in December 2013, with a farewell tour being held in April 2014. They were the first suburban rollingstock in Victoria to feature air suspension, heating and power operated doors. They were also the last passenger trains in Victoria to feature opening windows.

Just as these carriages went into service we were one of the many schools that took a joyride on them as a school excursion. The seats were awful hard lumps of concrete covered in green plastic/rubber/whatever. They were meant to be slash-proof or something.

Always loved riding these a boy, were rare to get on the Hurstbridge line, but we did get the odd one, will always remember the smell when the brakes appeared to be burnt.

No they weren't. The lack of air conditioning sucked..... The Comeng trains were a major improvement.

QuebeC VR unfortunately, elecrail have no interest in operating a preserved Hitachi train under their own name.

The only memory of these trains I have is riding it on the broadmeadows line, had some sort of weird burning smell and continous creaking

This is what happens when you got two pet birds walking all over the computer when you're trying to edit the video description. You get distracted quite easily. At least I got it right in the actual video.

its a refurbished harris train these were done in 1981 but due to the refurbished cars using 2nd seires harris motor cars the added weight from the air conditioning and the addition of more electrical equipment caused the trains to be to heavy go up hills so the 4 refurbished sets only ran on the port melbourne and st kilda lines that and the fact that they had asbestos in the paint and in the air conditioning units caused them to be retired in 1986 the trains were refurbished by comeng to test the style of the interior and some electrical equipment although retaining the original 2nd seires motors and bogies they were the first trains in Melbourne to a use fiberglass face and non opening windows and the first train to have the pantograph at the back of the motor cars and the first use of the shafenburg couplers like the comeng trains the refurbished harris trains wore the vic rail teacup for a year the original consist of the sets was M-T-T-M but this was changed latter to M-T-M-M-T-M configuration out of the 16 refurbished cars 1 remains in its original condition with 3 motor cars being scrapped and all the trailer converted to V/LINE h cars there was a number change early on in there life to A-line with the comeng sets

elmin2323 The cab wasn't open for public inspection. The volunteer I spoke to said that the museum would require an extra set of stairs so members of the public could access it, something they don't have right now.

they didn't have aircon and weren't as well built as the later Comeng trains and they weren't deemed worth upgrading unlike the Comengs. some lasted until late 2013 though
