I was born and grew up in Sunderland (East End) but left in 1972. I haven't been back for years and am shocked at was appears to be the half-dead wasteland that Sunderland is now.

I've drank in all the pubs mentioned. Started drinking in the Villiers and soon managed to get served in the Bridge Hotel. Loved all of them and had good times in the lot.

Sorry my friend - but the Old 29 was the best pub atmosphere possible - yes it was a dive but we had some of the best nights of our lives there

I'd love to know the story about the Sunderland Off-licence (now seemingly closed) called "Amy's Winehouse" and later Amy's Convenience Store!!

As a student in the 80s I would pass the Upper Deck to shop at Tesco's. Don't think I ever drank there though.

Railway tavern, I think at Longton worked at James a joplins, and it was the nearest. Every Tues and Fri had tripe in vinegar on the bar, and beer was good. Tripe was an acquired taste I never found!

I well remember the Argo Frigate which you Sir as an Echo reporter quite disgracefully missed off the list. It was of course located in Bedford Street next door to the old Echo Offices and print works and had provided many an Echo employee with both drink and comfort for a considerable number of years. It even provided the inspiration for the Echo's football correspondent's famous nom de plume of ARGOS and was demolished when the old Echo building was.

The Bridge Hotel was originally built as a private home for the Lord Lampton, because of the lack of decent transport, Wayback, when the wealthy of the area often held properties within the centre of Sunderland. The old 29, originally the Boilermakers club well known for your feet, sticking to the floor. thank you, nice trip down memory lane I know longer live in the town and I didn’t know the red lion had gone. I don’t know whether it a coincidence but most of the pubs closed when I stop drinking 🙉🙊🙈😂

Ah yes the Howard Arms, Left my mate in there as he passed out from drinking problem back in the 90's. We shoved him under a rubber plant and left him there. We went off to the Red Lion over the road. Then later on went to the fun fair at Seaburn where we were sick. It was all a bit of a blur. Well all in all it was a fun day from what we remember of it. Damn they were good days. You missed the Fort that was next door you water drinking weasel.

Red Lion closed after the trouble before the England v Turkey game at SOL.Proper hell on that night.Leeds wankers kicked it off I heard.Police shut it that night and that was the end if I remember correctly.Could be wrong but that’s how I remember it.

What about the leisure centre? Fountains, wave machines, slides and a diving pool with board. To top it off, a sauna, some games of pool and a few pints. What more could an under-ager ask for?

my mum and dad managed the cavalier in Silksworth from about 1987 to 1990. got loads if memories of Sunderland, mostly of how cheap things like buses were 10p to the metro centre or south shields! I think the cavaliers been shut down because the council want the land? such a shame its an old building. incidentally my mum always said it was haunted!
