I used to know an old man(he passed) but he would take a piece of wire with a wood dowel on each end for handles and he would put the wire in boiling water for about a minute then he would stretch the wire and drag it across the honey caps to decap. It worked well for him. He made them himself so they were cheap and disposable (at least he threw them away I suppose they could be cleaned but he said he had enough to clean.) Just thought I would tell you. Love that you keep bees not many women in the US would, you are amazing.

Perfect timing. We're getting ready to do our first harvest this week. This was super helpful, because we haven't found other videos that talk through practical aspects of the harvest. Things like cardboard on the floor and the paper towel dispenser. Thank you for the video!

I did my first honey harvest last weekend, but I may extract a few more frames tomorrow. I used the crush and strain method to extract but will certainly add an electric extractor before nest years harvest. Love what you're doing. Its sooo rewarding :)

Well done for your first harvest! There's nothing as delicious as those first few pots of honey :)

So much fun, thanks for sharing. My seasons first honey is always darker, the second batch of the season which I pull in October has always been a nice light golden color. Have a nice weekend, we celebrate our Independence Day this weekend and it's holiday here. I'll light a barrel for you, lol,

Yes, the first of the honey and the last of the honey is dark here too. I generally extract in the autumn and they'll have been putting down honey made from ivy. It's so hard to get it out of the comb. Have a great Independence day! The Manx National Day is on the 5th so it's a holiday here too just the day after :)

Thank you for the extra knowledge. I looked up Manx and found Tynwald Day and now realize its quite a festival on the Isle of Man. Also very telling of a long cherished history. Is it okay to say, the Viking Tynwald ceremony has my interest? There is so much interesting reading there. Thanks for the direction.

overlycreative1 Pleased to redirect you 😊 Tynwald day is the only day that Parliament meet in open air. They assemble on a stepped hill to read out the year's new laws in English and Manx Gaelic. Then there's a fair afterwards with loads of local artisans and food producers. Tynwald day is great fun and it's been going on for 600 years!

Different types of flower nectar causes different colours of honey :)

As a black person I can say very assuredly that that is definitely NOT an afro pick, the teeth are too close together, also afro picks with metal teeth rip the hair out. If I were to use that on my hair I'd be bald within a month, maybe less. LOL, that aside this was a very informative video, I've been looking for information of how to set up a honey room/shed for a small farm for a while, so thank you for this video. What is that dark honey used for. I've had some from my local farmer's market, but it had a very strange flavor and I didn't care for it very much.

THANK YOU. All the afro-pick comments made me lol at first but then I realized that people seriously thought it was one. It's a special tool (an uncapping fork) for opening honeycomb but I appreciate that there's a resemblance.

Neonicotinoids are bad news for bees. Long may they BEE banned in the UK and Isle of Man. Hopefully they'll be banned elsewhere soon!

I read the same article this morning. It needs to be banned everywhere.
