A tour of VELDDRIF, South Africa - Where Berg River meets Atlantic Ocean!

Wow, what a treat. Part of my DNA comes from Velddrif. I grew up hearing about Velddrif and Laaiplek how it was in the 1950s and 1960s. My grandfather worked in one of the canneries. When I finally get to go to SA this is where I am going.

Let me also add some info on the economy on Laaiplek,I saw you stopped by Amawandle Pelagic (a subsidiary of the Lucky Star Operations) . The Fish Factory produces The Lucky Star Canned Pilchard which is a major contributor to Southern Africa's Food security. They also produce Fishmeal(animal feed) much of which is exported. The raw material of these two products is: •Canned Pilchard (from locally Catched Pilchard, and imported frozen Pilchard from some parts of Asia) •Fishmeal(from locally Catched Anchovy, and Red-eye,and some waste(like offcuts) from the Canning Process of Pilchard. •There's also Fish Oil, which is a byproduct of the Fishmeal production process. This is also exported and is very expensive. All these processes create employment for alot of families in Noordhoek, Vredenburg,St Helena Bay,and Saldanha. They also attract some talented professionals(like Engineers,Artisans,Food Technologists,Accountants,Scientists,etc from all parts of SA)
