A Tourist's Guide to Cardiff in the Rain

'A Great British Adventure' is a series of videos that have taken me all over the UK. The videos are based on the new A-Z 10p coins - they aren't videos about the coins, rather, they use them as a sort of contents page. They will be uploaded every 3 days for the next 3 months or so, although there will be some miscellaneous videos in between.

Some awesome coffee shops in cardiff, you get what you pay for. Little man, uncommon ground, the plan, corner coffee, lufkin, secret garden, coffee planet, Brody's, 200degrees. All far superior to the chains.

Did you know Roald Dahl was christened in the Norwegian church? He was born in Cardiff and lived there until he put a dead rat he found in a sweet jar on the sweet shop, he got the cane in school because of it and his mother then had him go to boarding school in England (because of the teachers giving him the cane not because of the rat)

The stone circle was left by the Eisteddfod - one of the biggest cultural festivals in Europe based on the Welsh language! In the olden days they used to leave a stone circle wherever they went :)

And there are more than one of them around Cardiff. They are not particularly old because the National Eisteddfod only started at the end of C19th! There have been eisteddfodai for centuries though. They are called Gorsedd Rings

I can't believe we beat Scotland to the highest capacity of rain! I would have thought they were a much wetter place. Go Wales :) I didn't even know the Millennium Centre was made out of steel, not copper. This is a great video! I've lived in Cardiff for five years and make videos that show flashes of the city and I've seen a lot of different portrayals of the Welsh capital, but this has to be one of the most informed and accurate. It's a nice city Cardiff. The national museum near city hall is superb, as is the military museum inside the castle grounds. So much to see in Cardiff, in the centre, the shops and Cardiff Bay. It's a must see city, ironically most European of cities. Nice little video tour Chris!

Grew up in Cardiff so I had to watch your video! Cardiff Castle's 'little castle' is the keep (or that's what I was always told) and the base of the castle walls are the original Roman fort walls. When I was a child, Cardiff Bay was dockland and rather grim looking - it's improved greatly. The arcades are great - never seen another city like Cardiff! I don't know if you managed to walk around some of the castle walls while you were there, but the person who built them, carved animals into them - a rather stunning feature! The man who owned Cardiff Castle was a very rich coal exporter - the Marquis of Bute (can't remember which number - 7th Marquis perhaps) and I think his son gave the castle to Cardiff in the 1920s.

Your video made me cry.... I lived in Cardiff for 3 years to get my degree. The best 3 years of my life! I love Cardiff so much and miss it every single day. I've lived in Cardiff my entire life and I just thought the entire UK was more-or-less equally rainy. Didn't know we were special in that way.

You mentioned about the Norwegian Church. Cardiff was raided in 850 AD. It was first established as a Viking settlement on the banks of the rivers Rhymney and Taff, and Cardiff’s port was later added to it. Some of its streets have Old Norse names, like Dumballs Road, Womanby Street and Lamby Way. The latter was a Viking settlement trading along the River Rhymney, while Dumballs Road is believed to have been another camp. Womanby Street hasn’t changed significantly in 1200 years, making it the oldest lane in Cardiff. Today, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff continues the tradition of Scandinavian influences on the city.

After seeing this I'm glad it wasn't raining when I visited Cardiff a few years ago. It was in February and it was maybe the only day on my one week trip in Wales were it wasn't raining. But even in the rain Cardiff is a really beautiful city. Unfortunately it was only a day and we spend most of the time at the Doctor Who Experience (didn't regret it because it closed a year later!).
