Another GREAT video, John. I consider myself a viewer, not a lurker. 'Lurker' sounds like a terribly negative term ... someone who lurks about peeping through windows. Creepy. We've all listened to TV and radio programs but don't consider ourselves lurkers there even though we haven't produced our own TV or radio programs. My guess is that the negative term was concocted on the Internet for commercial reasons, to goad people to contribute their own efforts free of charge. After all, a lot of advertising money is made from all this activity. I'm simply too busy (and don't really have the inclination) to produce my own pipe videos. But I DO like to reward the good videos by at least commenting. As a way to encourage those like yourself who are making outstanding pipe videos. I've been smoking a pipe for almost 50 years, and STILL learn new things through the YTPC. So it's a definite asset, even though there are a lot dull, crude videos that one has to wade through. I don't bother to comment on those, since there's nothing really positive to say. But with you, I can only say: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Cheers and Mellow Puffs, Mark

Matches860 Oh, OK, that makes sense! What I find odd is the notion that those who watch videos are somehow expected to participate or make videos of their own, or otherwise get branded as 'lurkers'. I write open-source, free software that lots of people use, but I don't expect all those users to contribute software of their own. That would be a disaster :) The exercise of creativity that other people find useful or helpful is reward enough. Cheers, Mark

As usual John you are an absolute original. What a marvelous idea to do a 'live' interview with a fellow lurker. As a lurker myself I must say that for some of us anyway there are reasons why we don't post videos but thanks to you the community now knows that we aren't all introverted or antisocial. One of the amazing things about the YTPC is that even though I have never posted a video there are people subscribed to my channel and I'm sure that is true for many others out there. We participate in our own ways as best we can and have a channel so that we can post comments from time to time. Perhaps that isn't as personal as a video chat but it does allow us to be a small part of a group of like minded people we would otherwise have never known. And for me that is a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

Lurker here! I don't know any pipe smokers where I live, and all the ones I've met have been random strangers. Your videos and the videos of other pipe smokers have really helped​ me understand about pipe smoking and tobaccos. I'm a recently ex cigarette smoker, but still love smoking and tobacco. I've tried pipe smoking before but always screwed it up and didn't really know anything about pipe tobacco. Now I'm a pretty regular piper and love every moment, it's really helped slow down a lot of my anxiety and gotten me to enjoy nature(my backyard lol). I'm saving up to get a Savinelli Roma bulldog with some haunted bookshop, you sell that pipe and tobacco very well sir, can't wait to try them out!

Hi John: Thanks for the enlightening video on lurkers (of which I apparently am one). The hilariously ironic thing about the lurkers is that Mr. Bear looks like he is seriously lurking in your back yard. Anyway as Michelle says thanks for the stories. I too have viewed the thunderstorm one numerous time as well as the several historical ones. The turkey trot to Boston is my favorite. The image of pulling the turkeys off the wall of the covered bridge is priceless. Have you tried to Edgeworth sliced yet? I've been a lurker for about 2 yrs. That's about as long as I've been smoking pipe tobacco. One reason I've persisted is the YTPC and the information, and enthusiasm conveyed with the bonus of a voyeuristic look at personalities. There are a handfull of YTPC presenters I ALWAYS make sure to check out. I confess that the first time I heard you say matches860 I was put off, but I've grown to enjoy that part too. Not to take time away from what is hopefully a gorgeous Saturday morning in Connecticut, it’s a beautiful one here in Georgia this morning, but would you say one would need to first acquire a large collection of pipes and tobaccos to start posting pipe content? My aunt recently told me that 3 of my (now diseased) papaw’s pipes survived the house fire that lost almost everything my grandparents had and she’s going to retrieve them from Kentucky and gift them to me. I figured that might be a good place to start for a video. Maybe touching on what they mean to me and how they smoke. Keeping them going after 17 years of inactivity. If you have time, any advice?

There are no rules here thankfully! Any pipe and any tobacco works. Those pipes would be a great way to get into making a video. I'm sure you have a story or two to go with them. Generally, as you may know, we just get together here (virtually) and have a smoke and talk. You can ramble on about anything, just be yourself. Nice to meet you Blake! When I had all my teeth removed, the dentist gave me a booklet about post extraction which simply said, no smoking for 24 hours. I knew nothing about dry socket which can be the result. I had several pipes during the day and was lucky LOL. Many thanks for stepping forward!

John, John here (and I think my "handle" on YT is Jack ... common Irish habit of the parental assignment of a nickname that is not a "legal" name), I confess. I am a lurker! I don't do videos because I only possess a flip phone. It does not send or receive videos. I also confess that I am not a fan of computers yet what would I do for company on topics I love such as pipes and pipe smoking, story telling, and folks who enjoy the out of doors. Maybe someday when the old flip phone kicks the bucket I will have to get one of those that has all the video etc features. Till then, I promise not to be to bothersome with comments however consider me one of the MANY who favorite/subscribe to Matches 860! Great video with Michellev222. Hi John, long time lurker here. I enjoyed your video and I'd like to tell you why I'm a lurker. I love watching your videos as well as others and I've actually thought about doing some videos of my own but as yet I haven't done so simply because I don't really have the equipment to do so and I'm not sure exactly where to start anyway. Apparently, I'm a bit scattered so concentrating on any one thing is a bit of a challenge for me. Also, I work two jobs so time is a factor as well. I'm a pipe smoker for about a year now and I'm still finding my way through the various types of tobaccos. I'm also working on building a pipe collection of sorts. I would like to thank you very much for being a part of my pipe smoking journey and I hope you keep up the great work for a long time to come. Have a great day my friend.
