To be fair, Andy never said Neal is a bad drummer, his point is simply that his competence is exaggerated and I do agree with him, although, like him, I do love Neal’s playing.

Excellent episode. Simply put Peart is a super distinctive and memorable drummer that lead his band and he was an incredibly musical arranger who brought philosophy to the mix. I get how its annoying to some drummers but he's more than a drummer and the standard by which every rock drummer will be measured. He created the role he utterly fulfilled. That is a more accurate definition of genius. Chops and versatility dont = genius (it can help), having an individual voice that is irreplaceable does. One of my happiest days as a guitarist who plays drums seriously was my neighbor telling me through the fence, "Hey you were playing YYZ." I said thanks. My thought, so you recognized it as such... awesome.

Lorne. I wanna say, “Yeah, what he said!”. My sister Marie passed away from Cancer yesterday morning, and as I watch this video, I’ve been remembering all the stuff we did together that was Rush related. Many concerts, but the best was the weekend I spent with her in Toronto attending the RushCon, and finished the weekend with the last North American gig of the R30 tour at the Molson Amphitheater. That was the last Rush show I attended. The first time I ever heard Rush, it was 1974, I was in the back seat of my sister’s boyfriend’s car as we sat at a red light. Rick liked to listen to a Canadian station CJOM FM , and there was a commercial on promoting the newest Rush album, Fly By Night. I was 13 yo at the time, and i liked the commercial so much, that I shoplifted the record from my local record store. I just had to have that record! 3 years later, i was skipping school on May 22, 1977 spending the day in Port Huron , Michigan, snuck in the backstage door with my friends, hid out in the seats, and watched the soundcheck of my first Rush show. They played Xanadu before FTK was out at that show, and witnessed them writing/polishing Free Will. I saw 3 shows from the Hemisphere tour . Probably been to 25 shows in total. Rush was huge here in Motown, but was hard to get a request on the radio. Great episode Scot and crew!

In my opinion, the cream-of-the-crop prog drummers (Bruford, Peart, Portnoy, and Harrison are at the top of my list) posses a separate skillset than the great jazz/studio drummers (Williams, Cobham, Coluiata, Chambers…). The jazz guys are actually (in general) much more virtuosic and versatile drummers, so I understand the frustration of a drummer like Andy Edwards hearing so many people proclaim Neil as the greatest drummer of all time. I’ve seen this happen too, and the drummer has to say “he’s good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s probably someone like Tony Williams.” But what the prog drummers have is the highest level of creativity. Their role in the band isn’t merely to support the vocalist and play along with the song, but to be at the forefront, equal to all the other instruments in the band. They’re drum composers. There’s a reason these guys are mixed louder on their albums than a typical drummer. Neil is very arguably the greatest of this type of drummer.
@alexposilkin96833 ай бұрын
Not going to argue your points. However, even with the other prog drummers you mentioned, they’ve each been in so many different projects. They’ve proven their versatility. It’s just not the case with Neil. I spent my teenage years learning every Rush song, and all of Neil’s licks. But those other prog drummers have just done so much more.
@BenTevikMusic3 ай бұрын
@@alexposilkin9683 Won’t argue with you either! Lol… That’s a separate point than the one I’m making, and Andy Edwards made the argument for your point very nicely in his video. And I absolutely agree, Neil is probably not as versatile as most other great prog drummers. But for that uber creative, no limits approach to writing super memorable drum parts, he is one of the very best.
@alexposilkin96833 ай бұрын

I would never dis Neil Peart's drumming. However, his lyrics fall into the "subjective" category. One might say that they're down-to-Earth and accessible. On the other hand, they could bear the label simplistic and sophomoric.

I have been on a trajectory to calling myself an "accomplished" professional musician for more than 40 years. For every minute of that time Neil Peart has been the gold standard against which all other rock drummers must be measured. It may be hard to argue that Buddy Rich could receive that #1 title. Few rock drummers can maintain the speed and syncopation of a gifted jazz drummer. When he was alive he had many challengers and they ALL lost. It’s not the size of the kit and how many drums you can hit but how you master what you have before you. Rich’s kit was minuscule compared to today’s rock kits but nobody could keep up with him or maintain his syncopation.

Had a 3 album vinyl set of Rush back in the day , don’t know if only sold in the UK , Archives , like some of your vinyl went missing somewhere over the years . I’m having some trouble with this. Would Neil be considered one of the best if he wasn’t with and incredibly popular band. In this case then is Geddy Lee one of the greatest bassists of all time? Is Alex one of the greatest guitarists of all time? Sorry. But what do lyrics have to do with being a good drummer? Don Henley was not just a lyricist but a complete song writer, and by the way also a drummer. Who had to sing AND drum. Was he considered one if the greatest? No. And never. I’m not heaving on Neal AT ALL but maybe a bit over idolized.

In all honesty, the motive here should have been made clear to the panel before joining. I was asked to be on a show called 'A Tribute to Neil Peart', where I was told to talk about anything I wanted, so I talked about what I knew. This was then presented as a rebuttal to a video about Neil's drumming that I had never seen, and I end up coming across as an idiot Rush fan who equates lyric writing with musicianship. The mock 'feud' between the channels is funny, but the nastiness in the comments is not.
