A tribute to "The Seaview", the famous atomic submarine from "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". Maybe the best Sci-Fi TV series of all times.

I used to have a yellow plastic Seaview model that I played with in the bathtub. It fired torpedoes via springs and was propelled by rubber bands if I remember correctly.

There's something that the sixties and seventies really had going for it, great theme tunes and great tv shows. Rarely get anything memorable in tv show themes these days.

The thing is this: all the principle characters looked like they all could have been in the Navy at one time in their lives (before becoming actors) -- like Ernest Borgnine. This show was fantastic for its time.

I've always loved the manta ray styling of this fictional vessel. I've always likened the Seaview to a futuristic version of Captain Nemo's Nautilus. I've always liked the theme to this imaginative and wonderful show. Best - Mickey

Nemo was considered to be a madman. And in the series, ADM Nelson was depicted as being a bit , eccentric.
@tracywilliams7929 Жыл бұрын
Originally Aliens concept was a futuristic Nemo who self funded building the Seaview. The same anti war theme remained with Nelson being a sort of mix of Albert Einstein and Douglas MacArthur. He was a nuclear weapons culture hero with a conscience very much afraid for humanity's future.

When I used to watch this series as a kid I thought the Seaview was the coolest looking fictional sub I had ever seen, now in my forties, I still do. Great series from a time when TV science fiction was more entertaining and didn't take itself too seriously like today.

I never missed an episode when it was originally aired. Inspired me to join the Navy. But my love of aviation and the loss of the Scorpion cancelled my interest in subs. I became an ADJ (Aviation Machinist Mate Jet) One thing that bugged me was how high the Seaview rode in the water.

One thing I had wished for so many years (during the 70s) that a scale model of the "newer" or refitted version of the Seaview had been produced. I had several models of the original Seaview. I forgot if they were from Monogram or Revell.
@aristotle3589 жыл бұрын
I always used to wonder why no country such as Britain and the USA has such a submarine design such as the Seaview.. It is streamlined and has thick pressure-proof front windows which can have protective impact shields. It is like the Concord of the submarine world.
@aristotle3589 жыл бұрын
***** Point taken; but the Seaview would have very powerful lights. So lighting would be no obstacle and the least of logistical worries.
@AkiraBrahe9 жыл бұрын
Besides of not having real use even with powerful lights on anything but the shallowest waters that windows will be extremely expensive and dangerous for a submarine of that size, no designer will be along with such a weak hull point no matter the consideration, modern submarines even had been rid of periscopes and now use "photonic masts" which are basically high res cameras inside a extendable pole which no longer have to go through the pressure hull, finally, modern drones which can be launched from the torpedo tubes or special bays can be equipped with cameras on a variety of specters for visual exploration...so, no, sorry, no way that anything like the Seaview would be built on the inmediate future...that said, If I ever get access to super-villain money and technology a Seaview will be on the top of my list, closely followed by a submarine city and an entire fleet of massive automated vessels used to clean the big pacific trash cluster.
@aristotle3588 жыл бұрын
***** I wan't sure what to say at first, as I'm not as "enthusiastic" about these things as you seem to be. I'm assuming it is for an adult who is as keen on things Sci-Fi like yourself. One suggestion came to mind but it seems naff compared to yours, namely, the remote control gear they have to use to operate an Eagle without a pilot or if he's unconscious. It's a portable device and I saw it used in an episode where such was necessary and it was done on the moon surface.

Who would play the Grandson of Admiral Nelson in a No Nonsense Continuation of Voyage to The Bottom of the Sea .... Kelsey Grammer ......... ???? What would a Descendant of the Submarine Seaview be Like ? A Remake would take away the Charm of the Original Series and Movie. A Continuation of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea would add Depth and History to a New Production of Voyage. .. Seeing the Latest Version of the Original Seaview with it's New Capabilities would be Sweet. A Painting of the Original Series Version of the Seaview on the Wall in a Wardroom or in the Office of the Commander of the New Submarine would add a warmth and a charm to a new series of adventures on a new Seaview ... Even bringing in the updated support craft the original Sub had in the 1960s would add a rich sense of history and as i mentioned, a Charm, for the new series to reflect upon .... I presume the Fifth Submarine Seaview would be in Operation by now ..... Having Kelsey Grammer As the Grandson of the Legendary Admiral Nelson in a serious portrayal of the Descendant of the Original Commander of the Seaview would add richness and Hollywood History to the new version of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I believe I read somwhere that Admiral Harriman Nelson was meant to be an Allegorical Version of Admiral Rickover of the United States Navy.😊
