Thank you for this. Tim died of cancer. I talked to him last week. We have been friends since 1984. I am gutted. His incredible bass playing will be part of who I am as a bass player forever. Rest in peace, Timmy.

I only saw him once . VANILLA FUDGE was the headliner band ,Feb.1969. Jethro Tull , Led Zep , then The Fudge . Kinetic Playground , Chicago. What a night ! All 3 were fantastic . R I P .

They got their start in the early 70s promoting shows in Wisconsin + in Illinois cities way away from Metro Chicago because that was a locked market . Yardbirds played ALL OVER the Chicago/ suburban area in 1967 / 68. I m pretty sure that I saw them at THE CELLAR in Arlington Heights ( that was 54 years ago ! ). Anyway I saw them twice with J. Page in 68. One was at the Majestic Ballroom in Lake Geneva , Wisc.

First concert I ever went to which I think was in summer 1971 was Black Sabbath, Cactus, and Chase at the War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. Black Sabbath was amazing, but I remember being impressed with Cactus. Great live band! RIP Tim.

Well I never saw Cactus but Restrictions was one of the first albums I ever bought. One time I got to see Tim play. Him, Leslie West and Joe Franco toured a set of Mountain songs in 1988 and they came to a club in Latham, NY. Barely 50 people paid to see them! My ticket was #45 so that was sad. BUT! They fucking blew the walls down! It was such a heavy, thick, massive sound they put out! My friend and I still talk about it. I hope Les and Tim are jamming on upstairs.

Those early Vanilla Fudge albums were fantastic. I completely agree that if Rod Stewart had joined Beck, Bogert and Appice that would have been amazing. Great bass player. RIP Tim.

Sad. Knew he wasn't doing well. Bogert severely underrated when rock bassists are named. Appice/Bogert one of the greatest rhythm sections ever. Any album with those two is a must own, Cactus being one of my faves.

I saw Tim Bogert with Vanilla Fudge in the summer of 1969. Led Zeppelin was the opening act on their first North American tour with the Fudge. What a great show that was. I stood third row from the stage, right on centre, and was spellbound by both bands. I was learning to play electric bass and Tim Bogert made a huge impression on me. He was one of those rare bass players who could play complex lines and sing great at the same time. To this day he's one of my musical heroes. RIP Tim.

Thanks, Pete. I am sad to hear about Tim. His work and contributions to my early life soundtrack are meaningful to me. When I was about 12, I was given a copy of the VANILLA FUDGE, and THE BEAT GOES ON album. I was floored and had to find more and followed their RENAISSANCE release. The VANILLA FUDGE influenced Prog Bands such as YES - and Chris Squire referred to Tim as an inspiration. Sad news indeed!

Oh no. This is the first I've heard of Tims' passing. He was one of my teachers at MI in the early 90s. He shared many stories with me while we were outside on a smoke break. Greatest guy in the business. He was as genuine as they come. I know he got banged up real bad a decade or so ago in a car or motorcycle accident but heard he was doing ok. Of all the cats I got to share the stage with, I am most proud of sharing it with him. Man was he highly respected there by all the students and pros who came to do shows there. Anyone who came there as a solo artist had to have Tim playin bass with them no matter what genre of music they played. RIP Tim. we'll never forget you. "Smoke em if ya got em" Tim.

@@Trifixion22 Ronnie Dio was the hardest. 1975 . 15 year old I heard a song from ELF. Next thing he's playing in Rainbow...like 2 months later. I bought the 8-Track tape and someone stold it at a garage party. Greg Kaczor was playing guitar & between songs...stolen. They gave it back like 3 weeks later. My cousin...and then.....after seeing Ronnie in 1982 & 2003 & 2006.He just died...2009? Literally grew up with his music. Many concerts. Many albums. Many years. Good observation Nick Jones.

Loved his killer vocals and bass playing.I was fortunate to see The Vanilla fudge back in their prime.I even got to meet him when they started to play again in the late 90's. He was very friendly and pretty humble from what I gathered talking to him.Sad day indeed! Truly one of rocks gifted and innovative musicians.I also saw him with Jeff Beck and Cactus.What can I say a Legend, right? My condolences to his family and close friends.

Excellent tribute. Tim Bogert along with James Jamerson were my two reasons to play the Bass. And the funny thing about that is, they both hit me right in the ear but it was on two separate songs done by The Supremes! Jamerson on "Reflections" and Bogert on "You keep me hangin' on." I was lucky enough (and old enough) to have seen Cactus at the famed Fillmore East in NYC for the "One way or another" tour. They were amazing. RIP Tim Bogert. Your place in rock history will remain forever.

Thank you, Pete, for using SoT to let us know of Tim's passing. His name always - ALWAYS - causes a flashback to the summer of 1969 when my older brother and I endlessly played The Break Song from Vanilla Fudge's album Near The Beginning. The flashback is to the end of Tim's bass solo where he is introduced as "Tim Bogert....on the bass!" and you hear Tim respond "THANK you!" Seeing your tribute made me flashback again so thank you again, Pete for doing this tribute to Tim Bogert, who step off the planet before us. And to Tim, I can only offer RIP and "THANK you!"

I saw Vanilla Fudge at my first major rock concert. They were opening for Jimmy Page and the Yardbirds on what would be the Yardbirds last tour. Tim was earthshaking on bass. A while later I saw Cactus in a 200 capacity club and it was so loud our ears were bleeding by the second song. ...We stayed for the whole thing. Tim and Carmine were absolutely thunderous. Tim was simply a rock virtuoso.

I met Tim after a gig with Carminen Apice and Jeff Beck in Gainesville... When I studied in New York I was a Vanilla Fudge fan and was truly impressed with their performance...since it was the first time hearing them together in this ensemble. All three were gracious and we're nice to me and my friends while in Gainesville...Tim and I stayed in touch...for a little while.. What I recall is Jeff Beck was somewhat shy and Carmine was gregarious...and Tim was a bit wild..when ever I listen to their album, I can see their faces and recall how great the show was.. But most of all the time I spent with Tim. Gone too soon Love and Light and my deepest condolences to your family and closest friends.🎶🕊️

man, the year is taking off truly great :D those classic Vanilla Fudge albums are a "mandatory equipment" for my music collection(and surely for every true rock fan)..... always loved these proto-progressive bands such as Fudge, Moody Blues, Ford Theatre etc...... Fudge also sounded quite heavy for their time..... always considered them the predecessors of Rush....... I was never fortunate enough to see Tim live, but I played the shit out of those old records, so I know his basslines truly well...... R.I.P.

Thanks..Great to hear your perspective. One of my favorite Vanilla Fudge albums is "Near the Beginning", where the 2nd side of the album was a complete "live" performance called "Break Song"". Check out Bogert's long bass lead, accompanied by first Appice, then Vinnie Martel and Mark Stein join in a little. After Bogert's phenominal lead, Mark Stein yells out: "TIM BOGERT- On the Fender Bass!!"..Classic. RIP

i had a bunch of cactus albums back in the day. hadn't remembered that carmine appice was in that band as well. i have gotten rid of a lot of lp's over the years , (still have a nice 800-1000 lps) but never got rid of the beck bogart and appice album. rest in peace tim.

Absolutely an amazing bass player! Often play "Alaska" (esp.) in winter, from my personal favorite Cactus album, Restrictions. Also really liked his "Pipedream" LP from the 70s - I think it was a project/band that never quite took off, but that album had some really good stuff on it. He was a pretty strong vocalist too. A few (or more!) years back, I came across some bass guitar instructional VHS tapes in my local library that featured him - was pretty cool to see and hear him giving lessons - seemed really down-to-earth; a legend, for sure and will be missed. RIP Tim Bogert. Thanks Pete for recognizing him.

This does hurt, Tim was so good to me. He was my private instructor at MIT and he gave me some great advice and tips. Real life stuff and he told it like it was. One time when I was performing he pulled me aside afterwards and said hey man that was some pretty difficult stuff you were starting to pull off there but you all of a sudden backed off a little. He then looked me right in the eye and said "I don't ever want to see you pull back again. If you're going to go for it go for it all the way with no apologies". That was Sir Tim Bogert in a nutshell folks. Tim, R.I.P. but I know you will Rock in Eternity!

Vanilla Fudge were probably the blueprint for the hard rock band of equals rather than having the dominant half like so many bands of that era, especially in England. I don’t think BBA is the best work by Beck, Bogert OR Appice but they were probably doing their best individual playing up to that point. You gotta check out Cactus, man! The guitar player is outstanding and he happens share his name with Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty

Saw him with Cactus 1971. RIP Tim. Pete you need to check two obscure releases Absolutely by Boxer and the self titled album by Pipedream. His bass is all those records amazing bass playing
