I'm from California, but my maternal grandmother and her grandparents were born in Anderson County. Right there in Palestine. She and all but two of her siblings were born in Texas with the other two being born in San Francisco and Oakland. This is my research are on my maternal line. Can trace them all the way back to 1870 census. One day I'll come and visit. Surnames would be: Swanson, Jordan, Jackson , Ward, Anderson, Quarles, to name a few.

Just outside of Palestine there is a small community called Swanson Hill, thought you might be interested.

Back in the 1800s Palestine was the main hub of the railroad coming in from Louisiana and then the line would split and go West toward Waco and down towards San antonio. It was the main route for the train and Palestine boomed from all the train traffic coming through here.

Also the Redlands hotel that you are showing has the first elevator that was installed west of the mississippi. And it still works.
